More updates...

So, I should have the Sarin reports either tonight/tomorrow, but I got a phone call today concerning the examination from gemologist Julianna. She was able to view all 3 stones (see updated attached comparison chart). She automatically has ruled out the most expensive, 0.82 ct stone due to ''bowtie'', etc. So, she took a better look at the other two. Their price difference as you can see is ~300. She said the difference in color from E to F was a bit noticeable when they were side by side-- both are beautiful stones and would be a fine purchase. Also of note, the 0.78 ct is a VS1, but she said it was eyeclean, and thus she would suggest this one over the 0.77 ct counterpart as a ''better bang for your buck''...

I''ll post the details of the Sarins when I have them...

Admittedly I''m being lazy. Could you drag down the two contending IS pics and label them please?

Here''s a thread if you don''t know how to drag.

...this of course is going by the way they were labeled... my untrained eye can't tell you if they do indeed match up to their original photos... to me, the 0.78ct IS image looks more like the 0.82ct stone with the 'bowtie' that they told me to rule out...

Hmmm, it does seem to have a bit of bt going on. Maybe check with them to be sure?

And thanks!

Further food for thought... here they are all together, in the order which I believe is correct. I have flipped the IS images of the 0.78 and 0.82 from the way they were originally labeled. Thoughts??

To me it looks like you have them correctly now. And if so, I''d probably go with the .78.

Thanks Ellen! I'm no expert, but it doesn't take much to see they were mis-matched!!

So yes, I am leaning more towards the 0.78 (this is the one that has 'crystal, feather' in the GIA report), however I will wait until the Sarin reports come in showing the crown... and also for the comments of Lorelei / additional viewers

Sounds like a plan!

Edited my post-- In the 0.78ct should 'crystal, feather' be cause for concern in the GIA report of a VS1 (esp. since the gemologist labeled it eyeclean)?? The 0.77ct is VVS1 and has 'pinpoint' in the GIA, however, Lorelei said this shouldn't be a concern in that high of a clarity rating...

Sarin reports should be here today...

For the band, I am leaning towards the 3mm solitaire

psumz, you really needn''t worry with these clarities. I have a 1.40 round VS1 that I can''t even find the inclusions in with a loupe. And a round .58 SI1 that I can''t on that one either. At VS1 they are soooo tiny. Trust me, there''s no reason to worry on either of these.

We''ll be watching for the Sarin''s, and the band width sounds fine!

I am glad that I am agreeing on the 0.78-- Looks like I have a winner!

Although I think either would be a good choice, I trust the gemologist''s opinion (and yours)!

Okay, so as for the order-- should I:
A) have the loose stone shipped by itself for an appraisal, then sent back to JA for setting
or
B) have the stone set in my chosen ring, sent to me, and then take it myself to the appraiser (within my 30 day window)?

Just to check, the diamond is still reserved?

You can do this either way, it depends on your comfort level. You could have the loose diamond appraised, send it back and have it set, then get the appraiser to give the finished ring the once over and give you a sum for insurance purposes, or just have the diamond set and have it appraised as mounting permits.

CONGRATS!!

Yes.. they are both reserved right now

Hmm... well, will an appraiser typically charge for the ''once-over'' after the stone is set?
Is there a distinct advantage in having a loose stone appraised? For convenience sake, I would probably just make one trip, but if it would be more accurate, I am not opposed to going the other route...

They might charge something, or it could be included in the cost of the appraisal but it would be best to ask. It is said a loose diamond can be appraised more easily than one which is mounted, what I would do is contact the appraiser you intend to use and ask them which would be the best way to proceed.

I am lucky enough to live very close to the office of a very well regarded appraiser here on the PS forums, so I will contact him and see how I should proceed

I thought I was the Ellenster? I like Ellenator better. *flexes muscles*

You drive a hard bargain with the photos, but I can accommodate

In the meantime, I will keep pondering how I will propose... I was thinking of tying it into our other recent big news-- we just purchased a home together! Settle mid-July, but are moving in mid-August... I was going to buy us a new kitchen island, and have a big bow on it, and sneak it in at some point-- then slip the ring in a drawer.

However, I also have a trip to the beach coming up next month, which may present a better opportunity... hmm...

I vote for the beach, at sunrise or sunset.
