Quick thoughts on a stone (at local jeweler)

I don't have much to look at outside of this report. Will be able to see it in person this afternoon:

Comparing it to this one and trying to make a final decision:

The local jeweler one (top) has a better HCA (.9 vs 2.0), but the center color in the ASET I suspect will be concerning. Of course the smaller stone (top one) is 20% cheaper as well. Curious to see how it all goes... Any advice on what to look for in person would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much!

PS: The lower stone can be found here: http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1315168.asp?b=16&a=12&c=77&cid=131

Thanks for the great link and knowledge on the smaller arrows/lower half. I'm curious if the stone will be eye clean. Certainly a lot more inclusions closer to the center...

Grazie!

After seeing the stone in person, it does look good. It appears to have a whiter color than the JA one, which I'm not quite as much of a fan of. That being said, it looks good other than that, and given the 20% price difference, i'm very torn. The local jeweler gave the standard charade about comparing to a stone online, etc, which really turned me off (especially considering we have an existing/family relationship).

Waffling is an understatement at the moment.

You have the JA stone already in hand? Else by what standard/basis of comparison did you get the impression that the JA stone is more tinted than the jeweler's?

Ya - the JA is on hand. Can't really arrange for an IS of the local jeweler's (though I'm considering buying one - timeline is a bit tight)

Just looking at the size compared to the costs alone these are my thoughts..

2.113cts = 8.20 - 8.25 x 5.06
2.048cts = 8.22 - 8.25 x 4.99

I would be buying the 'smaller' one if it were me. A 20% saving on a stone that size would be fairly significant AND it is going to look just as big as the other one with near identical measurements.

If it looks good to you I would be going with that one!

Why is the jeweler disparaging the JA stone when you actually have the stone in hand?

Anyway, comparing the 2 side by side, which do you like better?

They're disparaging it just like many local jewelers do anything that they can't sell themselves. Complete lack of professionalism. I'd walk out the door if they weren't the "best" way (in a 300 mile radius) to get the mounting I'm looking at (have already considered having it made custom). And of course the family connection keeps them somewhat in line. I prefer the JA stone personally, despite the higher cost. Could it be because it's a TrueHearts? Maybe... There's definitely a look to it, despite the higher HCA rating.

Probably the H&A you are seeing. HCA is a rejection tool not a selection tool so better score do not mean a better performing stone when scoring below 2.

Agreed & agreed. All that's left is a decision...

yap...

Good luck with that. :p
