Question on a Men's Ring - Small OEC Diamond?

Hello, PS!

Now that my fiance is happily wearing her engagement ring, I can ask a question about designing my own ring. Having received an heirloom miner's cut ring which we plan to repurpose into wedding jewelry, I've become fascinated by older style cuts. Now I am considering having a small OEC set in a plain, half-round shank for my wedding band. Looking on the GOG website, their smallest OEC is 0.41 ct. I thought about having something smaller, as it would need to fit comfortably in a 5mm band, but would an EOC <0.41 ct defeat the purpose of having an older style cut with larger facets? Curious to hear your thoughts...

Cheers,
SC

Hmm. I have a 40 point OEC. You can't really see the facets, unless you REALLY look for them.

But, it might be enough for you to know they are there.

Do you like step cuts?

Thanks for the perspective, Gypsy. Even without seeing the facets, does it have a material impact on how it reflects light (more flashes, less sparkles)?

I'm not really a fan of step cuts in smaller sizes, though I am partial to the French cut diamonds that I've seen on Victor and Erika's work.

Oh, oh, oh ...

YES - FRENCH CUTS! LET ME SEE WHAT I CAN FIND.

OECs do reflect light differently, yes. Larger flashes.

I have an oec but it is a stand alone right hand rings. It is also 0.65ct, I forget the actual diameter measurements.
At that sizing, it is still hard to see the facetting that I love. But I love my oec, and I know that the flower facet pattern is there. Yes, it does reflect light diffenrtlu... broader, therefore slower flashes to the modern round brilliants, which are smaller and therfore quicker flashes of light reflection....

I very much like the French cuts, too. Erika does some nice work with them. I think Isabel is the band that I like... rectangular frenchies in an eternity style band. It will be diffenrt to a singular French cut set in a band. Guess a singular frenchies can be bead set into the wedding band...
Glad that gypsy is on board to help you.

Thanks, Gypsy! Not sure if French cuts are available on their own, or if it is a smaller size like the accent stones in VC/EW, whether I'd have to ask Alistair Kelsey if he can source them.

Thanks for that, Greg! Do you have a link to a thread or post showing your RHR at 0.65ct? That might be out of budget, but I'd be curious to see how it looks in a men's ring. I might have missed it in the men's SMTB thread.

Erika had a post about French cuts on her blog which is what really got me interested. I'm probably not keen on an eternity, but might have 3 small french cuts in a vertical row or one more rectangular one in vertical orientation.

Hi there,

i found the links for the OEC. It was a bit of a journey.. :)
The OEC i have is a very warm colour- Q/R/S/T range. SO, it was priced nicely.

I think you have a budget in mind for your ring, the ppl on here are VERY, VERY good at getting the stone and ring for you. It will be very close to your budget... but they walk you through it. They are amazing..... i have seen them do amazing stuff.

However, i think antique cuts are starting to rise in value....

Thanks for that, Greg. What a lovely ring. Out of curiosity, what size is your ring? I wear about a size P (AU), and it makes me think a 0.6ct stone would be too large for my ring. Though, perhaps I will also suffer from DSS? Hah.

I have heard back from Alistair and it seems like he can source French cuts! The image he referenced to ensure we are on the same page is from a blog post from EW. The image link won't work, so I can only provide the link itself...

My thinking is to have a single, rectangular French cut diamond, channel set (North-South) across the width of the ring. Anyone with thoughts on this vs. 3 smaller square French cut diamonds in a row?

Cheers,
SC

Hi Seeking clarity, :wavey:

I forget my ring size.. it is either a P or P 1/2. It is approximately a 7.75 US size. for me the 0.65ct, it seems right... Though having had it for a while, i think i would prefer a larger stone; more for seeing the chunky facets..... maybe 1.5ct. :cheeky: but, i would only investigate this path if i ever lost that ring. The setting that it is in, makes the diamond look bigger. the corners in that setting have been accentuated - making the diamond look like a star....:)

i also have an asscher solitaire in a semi tension set, matched with a carre eternity ring.

If you are only interested in one frenchy, i think it really depends on the dimensions- it is called the length to width ratio; used more traditionally for emerald cut diamonds. the general consensus is 2:1. the length is 2x of the width, if i understand it correctly. I have not looked much into the ratios. But, i do know that some dimensions hit the sweet spot for me and, others that don't. The image you have from Erika look really good.

This LW ratio will play a role for whether i set it NS or EW, as is the width of the band. Channel set would mean that the band is the width of the stone in whichever direction that stone is set.
Based on the pictures that you linked, for me, i would set 3 stones EW. i am partial to a frenchy eternity; it is on my wish list. :cheeky:
i would also look at 1 of them in the EW direction. I am not sure if i could have the frenchy set NS with either one stone or 3. My eye would see it as one of those proportions that would not suit me; hence, my preference for the EW directions.

What would really help for you: if you already know the dimensions of the stone, draw it out on a white piece of paper and cut it out. Then make a makeshift band out of a piece of paper, too. Then put that 'stone' onto the 'band' and on your hand. See if that works for your eye.

i hope that helps...
