Hello Newbie here.

I found this site and wanted some advice from some unbiased knowledgeable people. I'm looking for the perfect diamond with the best cut and size I can find within my budget. My criteria are these or better. 1.0+ ct, VS1, H color, excellent cut. My price range would be $7,000(diamond only, live in Cali so include tax if they charge it to ship here) for the biggest, best cut princess cut. I have included the ASET and Ideal Scope of 2 different diamonds I have already found and would love any other diamond recommendations you guys could send me.

What is your opinion on these diamond ASET and Ideal Scope. From what I have read online, you want more red and not a lot of blue. This first diamond is very symmetric but has a lot of blue in the picture but that should help with contrast. Second one has a lot more red but a big green spot in the middle and more white. What is your opinion on them? Which one would you personally prefer? Any other comments or advice on how to best read princess cut ASET and Ideal Scope because most of the guides are for Round Brilliant and not Princess cut. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum :)

Both look like they are quite strong performers - the second one looks to have a bit of leakage under the table (the white on the IdealScope image) but those areas are green on the ASETscope image so it might just have reduced brightness.

If you have the stones on hold at the vendor(s) are you happy to post links to them? Video analysis is very useful for understanding how the facets work at different angles :)

I like them both. Like OooohShiny said, a video would be nice to see. It may just be down to a preference in what you like to see. More contrast or
more white light return.

Have you seen these stones in person? Are they with the same vendor? You could ask for a side by side photo or possibly a side by side video of the
stones. Anything extra they could give you to help you decide what your eyes like to see is a plus.

Both are from the same vendor, one is on reserve for me and the other one actually sold/on hold for someone else. I wanted to get opinions of people without listing the vendor so I could get a better opinion about the diamonds/images themselves instead of based on the vendors reputation if that makes any senses. I attached some face up images and the image from the report also but could not figure out how to link the videos.

A problem I seem to be having is that cut science on princess cuts is not really mature. It seems for round cut there are all these calculators and hearts and arrows that are pretty easy to see if a diamond is good or not. Those don't seem to exist for princess cuts. I was surprised that GIA doesn't even give a cut grade for princesses. Both of the diamonds are AGS 0 for cut so I am sure they are good diamonds. I just want to learn more about since you can have a PERFECT AGS0 and a barely AGS0. Also going with only AGS diamonds limits my search a lot, since most princess cuts are GIA. Finding a few GIA ones to compare with and learning more about princess cuts, I might be able to find a bigger/better stone within my budget

I like the first...it appears to have a more symmetrical reflection pattern.

The first is a bit more appealing then the second

I would agree that the first is a bit more symmetrical but I think both will look good!

It looks like the top one might have more chevrons than the second, so more 'splintery' light return? Either way, I don't think you would be unhappy with either :)

I believe if I am reading the report right, they both have 2 chevrons. Could someone explain 2 vs 3 vs 4 chevrons on a 1-1.3 carat ring to me a bit? These two were basically the best of the best I could find and miles better than some of the other ones. Thanks for all the good comments, it puts my mind at ease.

This link was the one I was originally going to get because of the IF G color, but the Ideal scope and ASET were too poor.

A bit off topic but is Ritani a good brand for ring styles? How is their quality? I saw a platinum setting I liked from them and was wondering.

More chevrons = more facets being squeezed into the same real estate = smaller facets.

Smaller facets tend to disperse the light less (fan it into coloured rainbows) if I understand it correctly, so more chevrons on a stone might tend more towards white light return than coloured fire.

However, I may also be completely wrong... lol

Both beautiful! See, I think I like the second one better (its really just a matter of taste). I would not turn either of them down. I think you have
two really nice choices. You can look at the back side of their plots and see how many chevrons they have just to learn more about them.
Once you start dealing with AGS000 stones with nice ASETS it gets harder to find things to be nit-picky about. They both look beautiful.

Yeah, I guess if its AGS000 its pretty amazing already. Anyone else with any other diamonds they find that fit my criteria?

Here's ye auld thread by @Karl_K (from his wilder, younger days) about the basics of princess cut makes and the different chevron configs.

Although I'm not actively engaged in princess-cut sales I always, always bring this topic forward to jewelers in my workshops and training sessions. Even some pros don't realize that one princess cut might have 8-24 (or more) facets than the next one of identical carat/color/clarity - with no distinction made on the grading report other than the wire-frame clarity-plot, for those who know to look.

Thanks, that explain its well. More Chevrons = more smaller flashes like crushed ice. I am wondering how many facets you would prefer on a 1.2 carat princess cut diamond? Both of those listed have 2 chevrons, but I've seen that all signature brian gavin seem to have 3 chevrons.

Forgiven 888, can you say which vendor you got these diamonds from? Is the top aset a solasfera? I'm in the market for a princess diamond and have been looking for awhile, and not even Whiteflash ACA princesses have idealscopes that pretty!
