hi everyone
I am looking to get a diamond ring as a present. So in my research ive seen some places offer preset rings and others have it where you pick out the diamond separately and then the setting.
Is it more expensive to buy separately vs getting it all in one package?
thanks a lot everyone

Just a word of advice...solitaires are usually used for an engagement so if this is not for your wife the person receiving may assuming you
are asking them to get married. This happened to my brother when he was about 19. He was clueless and wanted to get his girlfriend a
nice gift. He did not ask for anyone's advice and found himself unexpectedly engaged. :P2:shock:

Anyway, to your question. The reason you normally would buy separately is so you can pick out a stone that fits your needs (color/clarity/cost/well cut).
Then you would have it placed in a setting that suits her.

It would be easier if you provided us with some links to what you are looking for. Rings with clusters of stones will usually not have AGS/GIA
reports and will come already put together in a setting.

A lot of times engagement rings that are already put together do not use well-cut stones.

Please provide some links so we can help you out a little better and maybe point you in the right direction.

Adding to what tyty said
If it's not a solitaire engagement ring that you're looking for, what kind of a diamond ring are you looking to gift? A cluster ring, a cocktail ring or even a diamond eternity band are less engagement-y than a solitaire ring.

If it’s not for an engagement and you’re in a romantic relationship with the intended recipient, you should really stick to something like earrings, a diamond pendant or bangle, or a colored stone ring.
Because there are so many styles of engagement ring, just about any ring with a diamond can be seen as an engagement ring.

Every once in awhile, someone does a price comparison between a B&M (brick and mortar) jewelry store diamond solitaire ring and the same ring from one of the PS vendors, where you buy the diamond and ring separately,, and it’s always cheaper to go with the PS vendor and purchase ring and diamond separately ... so to answer your question, you get a higher quality diamond and ring for less money if you buy separately from an online vendor.

Thanks a lot everyone.
I was thinking of a right hand ring, something to show her what she means to me. I got her earrings for Christmas which she loves. I may go with a cluster style ring or maybe a band ring.

The only reason I thought the band ring is Bc she has one and it’s two bands together that she likes but she says it’s too formal to wear every day

Dear OP, please do not give your sweetheart a ring - especially a diamond ring. As soon as you pull out the box, she will expect a proposal, ... even if there’s a necklace in it she will think omg for a second when you pull out a little box. She may have done that with the earrings, depending on the size and shape of the box, lol. If you want it to be a promise ring, that might work. But I can almost guarantee, that without a big long clarifying speech, she will think a ring means future marriage and want to wear it on her left hand. I would suggest holding off rings until after she has an engagement ring.

Of course, you’re the only one here that really “knows” your situation, and maybe a ring will go over without any misunderstandings or secret disappointment. I think you should be aware of the potential situation though.
