Hi Everyone,

I posted on Antique and Vintage forum, but then realized that getting advice on stones may be a better fit for Rockytalky.

Here's my original post:
*******
I have recently become very interested in purchasing a pair of old cut diamond earrings. I came across this pair on Jewels by Erica Grace: http://jewelsbyericagrace.smugmug.com/Jewelry/Earrings/229ctw-Antique-Cushion-Cut/33201292_Cv6NJw#!i=2880526978&k=5NvLDLJ

I love the style, and the size seems perfect for what I am looking for (something appropriate for everyday, but with enough wow factor for nice events). I am a bit hesitant to purchase sight-unseen, though, especially as I am unfamiliar with antique diamonds. Does anyone have thoughts on what this would look like in real life? Would the difference in the cuts be noticeable? How yellow would they appear on? Will I be disappointed by the sparkle compared to the hearts & arrows studs I got from Brian Gavin Diamonds?

Any advice is much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I am considering pulling the trigger soon, and was hoping to get your thoughts. I am an old cut newbie, and would particularly appreciate advice re the quality of the cutting. Is there anything that seems concerning? Does a list price of 6825 seem right for stones like these?

Thanks!

It depends on your comfort level. They look yummy in the video But I think I will leave the true opinion to the PS that are antique cushion cut obsessed.

It hink you might hear that they are not perfectly matched and that not certified. But it is up to you. What is her return policy maybe you should get them have them looked at independently and see if you can tolerate the different table sizes and the open vs closed culet. This is a tough one as this type of stone is hard to find.

Thanks, heididdl! The pictures and the video totally drew me in! But I have no experience with OMCs and don't know how to judge their quality. I really appreciate all of the advice PS'ers give newbies like me :-)

I think you will have to see them in person to know if you love them or not. I like very well matched stones, so if they are not very close in color or cut, I would probably not buy them myself. However, only you can make that decision for yourself! JBEG has a return policy, so take a look!

I know a lot of it will have to be judged in person, but I was hoping to get some advice on what people thought about the cut quality of each stone. I think given the similar shape of the stones, I can probably live with different cuts if each stone is individually well cut. I'd appreciate any insight you have into that, diamondseeker2006! Thanks :-)

I like the one that has a smaller table and open culet, but I am not sure whether the other one is a close enough match. I am hoping some others who have antique stones will comment.

I like the one on the left with the small table. The right one doesn't look particularly OMC-like. It seems like a lot of money for M/O cushions that are not very well matched.

Are You after the setting style more or those omc's themselves? As JulieN wrote another of them doesn't remind antique cushion at best. If I were choosing pair to myself I consirered these too

Maybe they aren't perfect either but more balanced together. They have different size culets, but IRL You can't notice it easily. My omc's have same situation with culets and no issues. When I was purchasing mine I have major doubts, because another stone has black center on most of the photos. Neither I or my friends haven't notice that effect IRL.

Here is my OMC pair

Thanks, JulieN! That's very helpful. I have been trying to figure out how much a fair price for them would be, and whether with that kind of money, I could find a more well-matched pair.

Thanks, Confection10! Your pair looks gorgeous! For the pair I am looking at, I was really struck by how pretty they looked in the milgrained bezel setting. It seems so romantic, and different than anything I've ever seen before. In addition, as I've had more experience with MRBs, the price for a pair that size seemed very good. I am not extremely wedded to getting an OMC (honestly, I think I may have been confused with the terminology myself, as I thought OMC meant "old mine cushion," but now realize that's probably wrong :-/). I've never had old cut stones before, but started seeing threads about them as I was reading the PS forums, and became totally obsessed with getting some for myself (those pastel flashes!)--not picky about what kind of cut, just want to enter the world of old cuts :-). This pair jumped out at me as I was browsing JbEG (also something I found thanks to PS!), and have been sticking in my mind ever since. I keep going back to them, but just can't tell how they'd look IRL given that I've never even seen an old cut diamond in real life. I really appreciate all of the advice PS'ers are giving me!

So while browsing eBay today, I discovered that there's a jeweler specializing in antiques near my office. I decided to stop by to see what he had, since I am new to the old cut world, and thought I might understand more if I could see some in person. He showed me these, and I just felt I had to share:

They were amazing! If only I had the funds :-)
