Hello! (:

So I'm constantly lingering in the CS threads but I've come to all of you diamond lovers today for your help!

I purchased this ring long ago at a pawn shop. It caught my eye and when I got home and gave the diamond a good scrub with a toothbrush and some dish soap....it whitened up and sparkled like crazy. Pretty good for $90 (;
Im not sure about carat weight but the diamond is approx. 4.4mm in diameter.
I know the piece is vintage obviously because of its lovely setting but I've always wondered what the cut of this diamond is called and what it may possibly reveal about its age or story?
It has this raised girdle and the table is way smaller than the thickest portion of the diamond.
Im not well versed in diamonds so I appologize if the answer is very obvious, but any help in identifying the name of the cut or even age would be wonderful!

Thank you!!

:appl: What a great find! Close-up, face-on pictures of the diamond would be more helpful, but judging by the crown in the profile pic, my guess is an old mine cut or old European cut.

I have a pretty good cell phone camera yet on this ring whenever I try to take a close up shot it refuses to focus. These are the closest that I could get while still getting a clear photo. Also head on shots of it just make it look like a bunch of glitter, like a darker glitter ball. In person its very white and flashy for a little stone.

I did a collage of your zoomed in pictures with one of my OEC thru a loupe. I’m mostly guessing by that super high ring-pop crown but also thinking I see a tiny culet in the face-on pictures so I’d agree old mine or OEC. When you look closely, does the faceting unde the table look at all like the bottom right picture? ie floral/petally at all?

Ooh love your high crown. Yummy. Yes I agree it is old cut and as @foxinsox points out it would be helpful if we could see clearer pics of the faceting to determine OEC or OMC...it is challenging to get clear faceting pics and takes lots of practice. Whichever it is though I agree it's old cut and looks lovely.

I have some OMC's in a brooch that look a lot like that profile pic, if it's glittery and doesn't have super well defined faceting then I'm going to go with old mine. Whatever it is it looks really pretty and you got a great deal on it!

Thank you for your reply!
So in person I can definetely see the center point and I see something resembling what you have around yours but the ends are pointier for mine...so yours definitely resembles something floral inside but mine, I can see a star. And I can only see this if I face the diamond away from a light source to where light is shinning through the back of the diamond.

Any other angle and I can still see that center point but its too glittery to see most of the "petals".

So if I can see the flower even if its more like a star would that mean that its an OEC?

I think so? It’s definitely old and it’s definitely gorgeous either way! And also a really good score for the price!

Its so odd that its either an OEC or OMC because I literally know zip about diamonds, maybe a teensy bit more than the average person but when I found and purchased this ring about a year later I started wanting to know the name of the cut because it was so different to what one usually thinks of as a diamond....I.e. Brilliant cut and after just seeing the words Old European Cut or Old mine Cut I had my gut telling me that thats what it is.
I tried to compare but since I have such little knowledge about diamonds I never could come to a definitive answer. Plus I've loved all of the other OEC or OMC's that I've seen and just thought my gut feeling was wishful thinking.
How strange!

Well thank you all for your input!
Its highly appreciated (:
Since you all agreed that it's probably one of those cuts and I've always had this feeling, I'm going to say that it is!
Its a sweet little diamond and I also have a feeling that it was one womans engagement ring. What a lively little sparkler she picked out.

@foxinsox
I finally was able to capture a picture of the flower that Ive been seeing now!
So its definetely an OEC! Woot woot!
Ever since I created this thread Ive been wearing this diamond out and in different lighting the floral faceting is oh so very obvious. I feel silly that I even thought it was a star to begin with.
Its just my bathroom lighting that makes it difficult to see but in any other lighting its there so prominently.
Thank you for your help! And everyone elses!

Yay! It’s so pretty.. and there’s a star/snowflake around the outside so don’t feel silly! :P2

LOVE :kiss2:

Love ove love the high crown!
It looks great on you!!!

Very pretty rings looking great on you! :love:
Hard to tell from your photos but looks OEC. It looks like the ring/stone needs a really good, thorough cleaning, that should help you seeing the pattern better as well. Use an ultrasonic and/or toothbrush once it went through a few cycles in the ultra.

Congrats!!!:appl:
