Hi everybody.

I'd love for you to come to a party to celebrate the slaying of the Monster in my brain!!

(old thread below - beware, there's a lot of wallowing, whining, and pity-partying going on) - I'm going to have it un-stickey-d soon to make room for people who really need support. As I think this girl's outta the woods! woo hooo

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/lostsapphire-sending-out-love-dust-prayers-and-support-to-you.101315/

I am ready to say that the monster (and his evil twin) is now WELL AND TRULY DEAD!!!

Can we have the emotie-fest now????

Let's start with cake:

YEA!!!!!! I've only lurked before but wanted to say YEAAA I am so glad you've slayed this monster!! This is my first attempt at emoties, I'll feel silly if it just shows the addy and not the smiley face sending flower, but you get the picture anyway I hope.

edited to add "i suck at emoties", I am reduced to using the happy clappy hands

ETA to the above, to save you from reading through 25+ pages trying to figure out what went on here:

I have had severe facial/jaw pain for almost 4 years, resulting in numerous surgeries on my jaw, gums, teeth, etc etc.

Was finally diagnosed with Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia in November 2008. Medications were not helping.

January 20, 2009 I had a "MicroVascular Decompression" (MVD for short). This neurosurgery went into my brain stem and disentangled my trigeminal nerve from a large artery that was pressing on it.

That''s the short version. It is now 25 days post-op, and my symptoms are finally going AWAY. YAY.

AND NOW, LET''S GET BACK TO THE PARTY!

How rough was the surgery for you and the recovery time? I have a friend with the same condition which is almost disabling.

I am very happy that you have finally overcome it.

Wow. I''ve read enough about trigeminal neuralgia to know what incredible news that really is!

I''m lousy at inserting emoties, so just imagine them there. ;-) I''m so glad to hear that you are better!!!! What an incredible relief that must be, and feeling like you''ve got your lift back!!

YAY!!

Tradergirl:

It''s been 3-1/2 weeks. Not a great, fun time, but not the worst I''ve ever experienced either. The hardest part was thinking it didn''t work for the first 3 weeks.....

The neurosurgeon told me his greatest frustration is meeting patients with Trigeminal Neuralgia who have endured YEARS of agony and unnecessary dental surgeries. And, the longer the patient waits to deal with the TN surgically (ie: through an MVD), the lesser chance of success. He said that the ''window of opportunity'' for success would be in a patient with less than 7 years with TN, and better if it were 3-4 years instead.

I also believe that the sheer FEAR of neurosurgery is what keeps so many people in the agony. Having had one neurosurgery 15 years ago that was quite similar to this one, I didn''t think twice about whether I should go ahead with it. Compared to the condition, brain surgery is a PIECE OF CAKE
emcake.gif
(well, not really but pretty close because it''s over quickly, as opposed to years of disabling pain).

There is an amazing resource out there, a book called "Striking Back". I''ll include the link for the website below. If you ever wanted to give your friend a gift, this would be it. It was the BEST resource available to me.
http://www.tna-support.org/storefront/proddetail.asp?prod=sb2004

I hope your friend can find some relief. All I know is that I finally HAVE MY LIFE BACK. And even up to a week ago, I had given up hope of ever being ''normal'' again.

Feel free to post any other questions if they come up. I hope your friend finds some relief.

Here are a couple of support groups as well, lots of resources there if she''d like to join us. A LOT of first-hand accounts of the surgery on there as well:

Hope this is of some help.
