It’s a gorgeous setting! It will be amazing with your vibrant sapphire (oh my where did you find that beauty).
I can see what you mean with the prongs. They are hardly visible with a diamond, but there are a lot of prongs if you combine it with a sapphire. The 6 pointy heart shaped prongs used in the inspiration ring that @lissyflo posted are gorgeous.
Personally I feel that a both a clean Art Deco look as well as a vintage Art Deci look with lots of engraving will be amazing for this design as can be seen in @LLJsmom ‘s ring

Thanks for your input @Acinom ! I consider you to be the VC expert around here. :P2

My sapphire is perfect for me. It’s from Gary at Finewater Gems and is 7mm round.

The prongs were explained to me:
“Those prongs are actually carved out from the metal holding the stone. The octagon starts with a flat surface in other words and then hollowed out to form prongs holding the stone. That’s why there isn’t quite the freedom to shape the prongs as on other ring designs of ours.”

So I have decided to mention I’d like the prongs as inconspicuous as possible and let Victor work his magic. I’m doing the same with some engraving. I’ve heard so much about his great talent so I’ve no doubt this ring will be wonderful and perfect in every way.

What that means is..... I’ve moved forward and this ring will be a thing!!! :mrgreen2:

The prongs are very tiny to me. I had a VC Jocelyn with double claw prongs that bigger, took up more real estate on the surface of the stone. The claw prongs extended further toward the center of the stone. The claw prongs to me seem to overdo the whole look. Too much. You’ve already got the metal halo surrounding the stone. Do you really need these graspy claws scratching at it? That’s what my brain thinks. So these subtle little “nubs” are perfect for the job. These little nubs are so little they look like they are barely clinging on to the stone. Thank goodness there are 8 of them. :lol-2: I can see them but they look integrated with the rest of the ring, like they’re supposed to be there. So that was my thought process when I initially specifically asked for these prongs. Victor agreed readily. I had looked at tons of vintage rings and loved this particular aspect of the prongs.
Don’t worry. I think it will be perfect. Can’t wait to see it. Here are some pics from a distance. The size of the prongs does not bother me.

Gorgeous! :kiss2: Thanks so much for chiming in! Your ring is perfection and I looked at it a whole lot before deciding on getting a similar setting. The prongs simply disappear in your ring. With a blue gem they will show up a bit more and I’m just being prong sensitive, I think.

I’m afraid tiny claw prongs would change the Art Deco look so I might just tell VC to proceed as normal. My ring will have prongs no matter what setting I get (other than bezel).

Thanks for helping me think this through!

@LittleRed Victor is so patient and wonderful to work with. He was 100% willing to modify his original Adriana setting to incorporate single cut melee, with cathedral shoulders/shank. Mind you, this was my OEC not one of his stones. He was so accommodating. Once we settled on the design elements, I was 1000% confident in Victor’s vision and aesthetic and skill. His proportions are perfect. As I stated previously, you will be thrilled!

Thanks @Bonfire I’m really happy I decided to move forward. I’m afraid I stink at design and envisioning what something will look like. I’m worried Victor would be accommodating and take my idea and do the best he can with it when, really, his way was the best way to begin with. So I might just say to make the prongs as he always does.

I heard that once they get my stone, the time frame for completion will be less than I expected. :appl:

Certainly the decision about the prongs is up to you. I think photos sometimes make things look bigger than irl. The setting you have chosen is gorgeous! I personally feel the original nubby prongs will look less obtrusive on your beautiful sapphire than claw prongs. I wouldn’t change a thing if prong subtlety is the look you want. Victor is a master of proportion in his pieces.

Yes, Victor’s turn around time is awesome! I can’t wait to see how it turns out!

If you really want unobtrusive go nubby and oxidized if possible. It’s so wonderful of him to even suggest that. Seriously so much work to oxidize a tiny little piece of metal. I’m amazed it’s even possible. I think the nubs will look great. You can see how small they are irl when you compare it to the other solitaire ring in the pic.

Have you decided on the engraving? Or will you decide on engraving when you see a photo of the setting?

With engraving more vintage Art Deco and without a crispy modern Art Deco look.
In the end I felt my 100 years old stone needed the vintage vibe of engraving and Victor works with such an amazing engraver. Now after 6 years I sometimes wonder whether I should have left it clean and modern as Victor recommended...

They do look quite tiny in your pic compared to your other ring. It’s so pretty! I’m thinking my sapphire won’t be as “dark” as the one on his web site so the prongs might show even less.

Here’s another ring I found on Victor’s IG. Mine should look pretty similar, I suspect.

I LOVE the engraving!  @Acinom

Me too - it gives a seamless transition from the frenchies into the shank. Although, in all fairness, it wasn’t exactly shabby without the engraving!

I can’t wait to see your ring @LittleRed . Octagonal settings have my heart and I would love a VC piece one day too.

I’ve just seen the lighter sapphire you posted above. I don’t think you have any worries on the prong front!

I do want engraving. I was told the engraving will look like this and that Victor will decide where it will go once he’s working on the ring.

I think with my setting choice with the octagon being the way it’s positioned, it makes engraving a little more difficult to engrave. I think that’s why this option is offered without engraving. Oh, but I do love engraving so I hope it works out well.

That’s what I’m now thinking with my sapphire probably being a bit lighter. Thanks for mentioning this. It helps confirm I should just let him do what he does best without trying to change a good thing.
