I am needing some inspiration from all of you! I am looking to set my new 3.55 OEC in a simple solitaire setting. Here is the catch: I have NO money to work with after the stone. But, at least I LOVE The stone. Well, not NO money, but certainly not enough for MM's petite torchere, a JbEG or a Steven Kirsch design etc. I will again be having Adam's bench make it for me. They did a lovely job on my last ring and it will be the best value for my money. I am seriously considering unplated WG but may go with YG again...not sure...I kind of feel like the design may dictate that.

I love this JbEG design...I should say I love it in the real pics of the ring. I think the CAD looks fugly and too angular.

I have this CAD that I have already paid for but we never ended up tweaking because I went in a totally different direction. Problem is I really need to tweak it into a bit of modernness. I know a lot of people like this design but it's not really "me". So, what would you do to bring this CAD closer to the JbEG design? Pinch in the donut area, 6-8 prongs instead of 10, rounded shank, ditch the cathedral??? Can this morph into something modern/elegant but with a nod to antique?

I think white gold would be more modern, yellow gold to me is more of an antique feel - which I love also, but it's just a different look. I like the idea of 6 prongs on a wide donut with no cathedral. I like the flat shank vs the round.

Thanks for your input, liaerfbv!

Just to show you a ready-made option, that CAD reminds me of one of my favorite Stuller solitaire settings - http://www.stuller.com/products/7198/167831/?groupId=36594 - generally stock settings are less expensive than a custom setting, although this is not always the case - and I don't know the mm size of your OEC but I am guessing the 10mm size would work if it is the traditional OEC shape. If you're interested in the Stuller setting, OWD or your local jeweler could price it out for you.

I love that Stuller setting! How great would it be to get a stock setting if possible?? Are you open to other stock options or are you pretty sure you're going to use OWD?

That is an interesting option. I can't tell though from the pics if it would end up looking refined enough for me.

I will look again from my computer.

I am open to a stock setting if its possible to findone that I love. not sure aboutthe prongs on a stock piece though...

FYI: the Stuller stock settings are cast by Stuller upon order by your local jeweler (or OWD) - then it is shipped to your local jeweler (or OWD) and their bench does the finish-work on the setting and also sets your stone - at that point, they usually can refine the prongs to claw-style or rounded, whatever your preference.

I think all of the thoughts you have for tweaking it sound PERFECT (bolded above). I would do 8 prongs since your stone is nice and large and I would go with unplated white gold, that would be STUNNING with your gorgeous stone

Ah...okay...I have never done that before. Good to know OWD could do the prongs on a stock piece.
