Platinum - How often can you polish it?

Both my ering and wedding band are set in 950 platinum. I''ve had them for 6 years and haven''t polished them. The bands look pretty dull now compared to when I first got them, both had the shiny finish.

Is it safe to polish the rings to bring back the shine? I have heard that polishing platinum will make the metal thinner and/or weaken the prongs. How often can they be polished without jeopardizing the integrity of the rings?

My ering is a solitaire in a six-prong setting (similar to Tiffany''s).
My wedding band is a simple channel-set diamond band.

Any input will be appreciated.

Polishing does take away a tiny amount of metal, but not nearly as much as wears away over time anyway. After 6 years, you are safe to go ahead and refinish the pieces. It will make them look like new and should do no harm.

I agree with David- should be no problem at all!
I''d add that this would be a great time to have the ring checked over for integrity.
Have the jeweler check the prongs, and make sure the stones are tight.

Thanks much. I feel better about getting my rings polished now. David, you brought up a good point. I have noticed that a couple of the diamonds on my channel-set wedding band are loose for a while. Just haven''t taken it back to the jeweler yet. Also, a local jeweler noticed that the stone of my e-ring was a bit "lopsided". I didn''t notice it before but after he pointed it out, it was obviously off center and the prongs were slanting to one side. I was surprised because I thought platinum was very hard to bend and I don''t think that I was "rough" wearing my ring. I guess 6-years of daily wear can cause quite a bit of wear and tear even on a platinum ring.
