What to do with $1000? I want to buy my new wife a 30th B-day present and I can''t decide between a diamond pendent or diamond earrings. Any suggestions? Which would get me the most bang for the buck?

tough call. For $1k you could get a .50ctw J SI pendant or probably .50ctw studs in J SI. Well cut H&A that is. what will your wife wear more? i love my diamond pendant and wear it all the time. my studs less so. that''s just how i am. what will she wear?

Funny - I''m the exact opposite. Wear my studs every single day, but don''t wear the same necklace daily.

Either way, I''m sure she''ll be pleased.

see i guess it''s really personal. my vote is earrings. i rarely wear a pendant, much less the same on every day. earrings are so classic to me. you can keep them on and they''ll work. for me a pendant doesn''t work with all shirt collars and all, so i tend to change them out if i do wear them.

You definitely have a nice budget for either and as Mara and Alj said it comes down to what SHE would like. Personally I would go with the pendant. A nice ACA would be nice. I have a nice pair of diamond studs, but don't wear them as much as my diamond pendant. I like changing my earrings to fit my mood, what I'm wearing etc...

What does she wear more? I''m personally a necklace girl. I could go out with out rings, bracelets or earrings but I always have a necklace on. Plus, figure you get one now and save the other idea for another gift! I think she''ll be quite happy with either gift!

I vote for diamond studs if she doesn''t have any...they''re so classic and basic to a woman''s wardrobe...

I''d also forgo H&A, ACA, etc etc. If they''re well cut, even I-1s can be very pretty for ears...

Very individual indeed!

I just chose earrings because I will wear them more.

However, with earrings you have to buy 2 stones vs. 1 for a pendant - so you can get a bigger (more impressive?) stone with a pendant. But for me earrings were a better choice, I never wear necklaces!

Let us know what you go for.

I was originally thinking about getting earrings but have started to lean towards the pendent since it would be a bigger diamond. Now I''m not sure what to do.

If I go with the earrings what would be a good choice? Three prong martini, four prong, WF w-prong, other?

Well,
I personally find plain old earring studs to be kinda boring - so strangely enough, that is what I have picked!

I really liked a few of the threads that were posted with the 3 prong martini look. So I figured they were a little bit different and yet still classics.

I had a slightly smaller budget that yours and still got .5 TCW, H - SI stones from the Whiteflash ES ready-to-go selection. I will be getting them next monday! Very excited!

There was plenty of great lookin J stones posted here recently, so I looked in to getting J stones intead (thought that I could bump up the carat weight and still stay in budget), but WF doesn''t have any in stock. And I want them NOW. Probably wouldn''t be an appreciable size difference anyway....

I just did a quick scan of WF earrings and your budget should get you some .7 - .8 TCW studs (setting included). Ofcourse, you could also get a .5 stone for a pendant and then figure out the pendant setting.

Hmmm... when I think about those two options - I would rather get the earrings. Again, personal preference though!

For me, it really comes down to what she will wear more. If she doesn''t wear alot of earrings then they will just sit in her box, unworn. Similarly, if she does not wear necklaces, same thing. What does she seem to prefer?

I think a solitaire pendant is the way to go. Half carat in a nice slim white metal bezel will look plenty impressive around the neck. I wear my pendant all the time- its like second skin. Earrings I personally would like bigger stones so would want to wait for that.

This is a hard one!

So... you have a great Jubilee on the record:

... any chance a pendant of the same species could be found? Earrings would be too small, I guess and there doesn''t seem to be any in that size. So if matching cuts appeals, the remaining choice would be the pendant. IMO, this sounds better for an important celebration like that. Earrings are more of a necessity

than exceptional gift.

Just my random take, of course.

I love the look of that jubilee in a solitaire. I too was looking at some of your old threads to get an idea of the type of jewelry that she already has.

I saw that you wrote this in another post: "But...she also said she likes the look of antique/art deco rings from the 20''s and 30''s."

How about an art deco/antique pendant? Or how about a fabulous Right hand ring? I''ll be on the lookout for more ideas.

Oh you''ve got a jubilee in a ring?

Well then that settles it!

A solitaire jubilee pendant!

I have a small .38c Regent in a pendant and I ADORE it. I like that it''s not round and it takes a 2nd look for people to realize that. Fun and very sparkly from the neck.

I love rings because I can spend all day looking at them. Girls get cheated with the pendants and earrings because we can''t see them while we are wearing them!

Here''s a beautifully sparkly ring with ACA diamonds. It kind of has an antique look to it IMO.

Earlier this year I talked to Jon at GOG about the availability of some Jubilee earrings. He had a really nice pair but they were out of my budgeted price range.

I like the idea of a Jubilee pendent but thought I could get a bigger looking stone if I went with a round. I guess I need to see what GOG has in my price range.

Mara - what type of pendent is your Regent? What would look best with a Jubilee.

She already wears her grandmother's e-ring as a RHR. It's an art deco style ring from the early 20's.

Hey you need to try calling Cary Horowitz the actual cutter for the Jubilees! I know he has sent down some great looking Jubilees that were too included to be an e-ring (I know some of the carats were much smaller than what my boyfriend wanted) so maybe he might have a perfect pair of studs for you or at least a pendant!

For the record, I''m obsessed with Jubilees now thanks to your wife''s ring.

I e-mailed GOG about it again this morning. Hopefully they''ll have something to fit my budget.

Thanks. I''m glad my wife''s ring helped you decide what you like and want.

My regent is set into a regular basket pendant with 4 prongs. I actually had GOG do it because my local jeweler had totally botched the setting with an 8 prong de beers head that was overwhelming the small diamond. So GOG took care of it and it looks great.

It''s true you will get alot more bang for your buck with a round pendant in terms of size but if your finace likes the look of the Jube''s (which are similar to the original Regents) then you can''t go wrong in terms of her loving it. And honestly even though my regent is alot smaller than a similar round...I think my .38 Regent has 4.47mm diameter while a round .38 well-cut stone would be more like 4.7mm...it still has alot of presence on the neck, I catch sparkly glimpses of it in the mirror all the time. And it''s fun to be unique!

I still do want a round pendant around .75c. I also have given thought to getting instead a larger Regent or maybe a Jube but now that the cutting style on the Regents have changed I am not liking them as much now that they are all chopped at the corners. So when the day actually comes, we''ll have to see what happens!!

I''m not sure which she''d wear more....earrings or a pendent. She doesn''t own or wear a lot of jewelry. I think I''m leaning more towards a Jubilee pendent if GOG can get a suitable one in my price range.

That sounds very nice let us know what you find out from GOG.

GOG hasn''t been able to get any Jubilees that would work for me as earrings or a pendant.

I''m now trying to choose between a pendant (around a .38 or .39 in a basket setting like Matatora''s K pendant) or earrings (.50tcw). What to do?

As I said in another thread ... I vote bezel set necklace. Gives a small stone more "oomph" (I hate dangly "loops"/"rabbit ears" that are as big as the stone) ... and with the clean look of her e-ring ... I think she'd appreciate the sensibility of the bezel.

FYI --(My sister's husband just got her a pendant for her 30th birthday and she wishes, wishes wishes it had been bezel (diamonds by the yard) style. Her words ... "He always gets it 75% right ... but not quite what I'd pick for myself")

ETA ... myself: I've been dying, coveting, wishing & hoping for an east/west set emerald stone, in a thin white gold bezel set DBY style. Probably for 10 years now after a saw a gal who had one done that way with a family stone. (I actually wanted one before that - but never could really "visualize" it til I saw it on her). Bliss.

Darn it ... here it is again. Ignore the yellow gold. This is the style I''m talking about .. shown here with a .40 stone.

Is this bezel from WF the same as what you posted? What is "diamonds by the yard"? What does it look like from the side and/or back?

Here are two WF ES diamonds that fit my budget with a pendant:

.38 H SI1

.39 G SI2

Any thoughts on either of these? Any other suggestions?
