I've been trying to decide for awhile now what to do with a diamond my great aunt left me years ago. It has great sentimental value, I just don't much like marquise diamonds. But, because it was her engagement ring I want to try to find something to do with it that I'll like and wear. I've come down to 2 options.

First, an E-W set bezel from JA:

Or, a Barbara pendant from BGD:

I'm fairly certain I'll like the marquise in a pendant. I'm not at all sure I'll like it in a ring, but I do like the idea of wearing it (somewhat) as she did, and being able to see it. I would wear it as a RHR. It's about 1 ct.

Opinions? And thanks!

I love that JA E/W setting!

if you went for a pendant, you wouldn't be able to see it - is that an issue for you? If its a gorgeous diamond would you prefer to view it on a regular basis, rather than have it not be as 'viewable' to you?

What about a dbty bracelet? wonder if that might be an option for you - its not a ring but easily seen as you move thru the day!

Thanks for the feedback Enerchi! It would be nice to be able to see the diamond ... I love the idea of a DBTY bracelet, I'm just not sure how safe the diamond would be in there, I'd likely be knocking it on things all the time, and there's already a small chip in it.

I actually found a setting I love, it's by GRAFF (ok, so it would be a custom job), and it's obviously an engagement ring so I wouldn't be wearing it as a RHR. Basically defeats the whole purpose of my project but something about the setting really speaks to me so I'll just post it here for fun!

The EW is stunning and contemporary. The pendant is just kinda eh.

I wonder how much money you will want to put into a reset if you do not like the cut in the first place. Good money after bad? I understand sentiment but is it really a ring vs pendant issue or how can I make this work for me? What would your aunt want? I would set it in a simple solitaire setting and save it for your next of kin.

I would go for the east west. I love that look, and I am normally a traditional person. The pendant wouldn't show the diamond off as well as the ring. Btw.. I LOVE marquise shaped diamonds!!

I LOVE the setting from JA and actually have it on my "wishlist", but I vote for the one that "really speaks" to you. I think you should go where your heart is leading you...

Warm regrds,
Patty

E/w!

So, it seems like there really is not a strong feeling one way or the other ... lol.

I may try the e-w. The setting in 14k wg really is affordable and if I don't like it, well, it's certainly not a loss in the neighborhood of many of the resets I see here!

I'll probably do it for my birthday in a few months, so I have some time to mull.

Thanks so much for the opinions!

I'd get the Graff setting and have it made by Steven Kirsch.

How big is the diamond? I mean what are the approximate dimensions?

Personally, I am not fond of a ring with a marquise shaped diamond. Don't know what to make of it, engagement ring or right hand ring? For a right hand ring, I would rather have something like a 5-stone ring or an eternity ring. Besides, I am not sure if the cut is great enough for a ring. Therefore, I would use the marquise diamond for a necklace.

The marquise shape is very interesting to have as a part of a dbty necklace, especially when you combine it with other diamonds in the dangling section. its elongated shape is best for dangling. Another option is to layer the single, bezeled diamond with another necklace.

I personally find the marquise quite lovely and I think they get an bad rap.

A well cut ones is absolutely nice enough for a ring, just like an oval or pear.

I think they are coming around again and set in a sleep modern setting I think your get lots of compliments and like it more than you think.

Ring! I think a bezel light that could be a part of a great stack.

I wear a marquise that looks like an engagement ring on my right hand so I suppose I'm partial but I love it. Its unique and a large marquise in a simple well made setting is so rare!

Have you seen this?

I  that James Allen setting and that would totally be my choice. I can see that being a "signature ring." The question to you is, are you comfortable with that sleek contemporary style, and do you have room for that ring in your ring wardrobe?

I like the Graff ring with side pears. I definitely think that can be a right hand ring. Gypsy suggested Steven K to make it and I think that is a good choice!

This is one I really love...maybe you have seen it? Made by Greenlake...

I wouldn't do the Barbara pendant. I just don't see a marquise in that setting. I have seen marquise settings that I really liked, but they are pricey. This is a nice one:

I actually really love the idea of the pendant, but I wear my necklaces long ... 20" chain at the least! What's the point if the wearer can't enjoy it too, right?

I guess my question would be ... do you already have a ring for the finger you're thinking of, or a pendant? I'd vote for whichever had a gap. If you have both or neither, though ... comes down to, do you love the stone or the sentiment? If it's the former, ring to admire, if it's the latter, pendant for emotions and for appearance (a great big honking diamond pendant never hurts, after all). But at the end of the day, hugely individual choice ....

Circe, I love it for the sentiment. I should have just left it in the original setting but I had it put into a custom pendant that I never liked and now it's sitting loose in my jewelry box, the original setting basically destroyed.

Niel, I have, I love that one! Funny about this marquise, I remember as a child gazing at my aunt's ring thinking it was beautiful and so huge! So I do have a soft spot for it and think it's pretty.

Gypsy, yes! I was just browsing Kirsch's website yesterday and noticed he had a similar setting ... then I started thinking how much I like it with a round, which brings me back to the sentiment expressed earlier about throwing good money after bad. Sigh. Also the one in the Graff picture appears to be a bit chubby, I think? I'm worried that's why I like it. Mine, while not super elongated, is not a chubster either.

DS, I've seen that as well, it's really pretty. I am interested that you think the Graff style can be a RHR.

Thanks again for all the input! Somehow everyone's opinions are helping me to solidify my own, even where they're not the same. What do you guys think that Steven K setting would run? Somewhere between $2 and $3k?

Unfortunately I think it would be more. ::(

HOWEVER I would contact ERD. they have been producing lovely rings lately and would be closer to budget I bet.

Wow okay you're right, a similar ring on ERD's site is on the high end of that.

Its the side stones that brings it up

But honestly erd could make that and very well. No need for hand forged with typre. And they make lovely claw prongs.

I love the combination of ideas from Circe, DS and Fancy diamond - have a pendant on a longer chain so you can see it easily as well!

Use a MRB at the top and bottom and place the marquise as a length wise "lozenge" in the centre - that's a cool idea!

Clearly - key boards were not made for very good visuals! but that kind of an idea!

I LOVE that e-w setting you show!!!!!!!!!

why not as an E/W pendant? something longer ? could be stunning. even in a bezel like that JA one? just a thought!

where'd you land here? keep thinking about e-w marquise pendants and wondering! :wink2:

I great big puffy heart that JA setting. Also, the bezel helps plump up the diamond. And if you don't like it, JA will pay return shipping AND refund you for the setting, at least I think that's what they said when I spoke to them about settings this week. Better check that, but if correct, it could be risk-free. Also, the 14k is only $675 which isn't bad at all. The diamond sounds beautiful and a very respectable size at about a carat. If it were me, I'd love to get the pleasure out of seeing it as I wear it. Anyway, you could wear it one way and then switch after a few years if you want a change. And don't worry about it looking like an e-ring. If I were single and had the money I'd totally rock a two-carat round on my right-hand ring finger!
