If you are not picking out the ring together then I'm all for not asking her size and for knocking her socks off.
Ps: There is no way vernier calipers will work.

I most certainly don't think asking her ring size is indicatory of laziness or carelessness, but if you and your girlfriend *do* feel that way then that's what matters.
If you and she both value a secret proposal, enlisting friends and family for help is a great idea... as is finding out what size the sample was.
A question: Was the sample style a particular favourite of hers? And if so, is it a semi-bezel or a tension setting? A plain-shank semi-bezel will be easy enough to size a bit after you propose. A tension setting, on the other hand, needs to be exactly right - the mechanics of the structure leave no room for error or guesswork.

It's a semi/half bezel, not a tension setting. Is it really that easy? do they cut out some metal or do they shrink/stretch it to size?

Thankyou, that is helpful. I didn't know ring could come in 1/4 sizes.

Don't rely on this though. I'm 5'7" and weigh about 130. My ring size is 5.

There was a table of wood and bone carved rings. I made a joke about how I was going to buy her a wooden ring so we could tell our grandkids how it was back when we had no money. Anyway they were 3 for $20, and now she has 3 rings which fit her ring finger within easy access.
Problem solved. Now to figure out a setting.
Thanks for all of your great suggestions everyone!
