Panic. I have no idea how to find out her ring size...

I would guess that the stock rings were all within a certain size, so that will be really helpful to know. And you can ask the friend who was there with your girlfriend if the rings appeared big at all. Hopefully she was paying attention, I'm sure she was!

A question: Was the sample style a particular favourite of hers? And if so, is it a semi-bezel or a tension setting? A plain-shank semi-bezel will be easy enough to size a bit after you propose. A tension setting, on the other hand, needs to be exactly right - the mechanics of the structure leave no room for error or guesswork.

Anything you guess at this point will likely not be exactly right summer and winter anyway. Get as close as possible but not smaller than what will fit. Many companies have a provision for one free size adjustment. Then let her decide what is comfortable.

If you are not picking out the ring together then I'm all for not asking her size and for knocking her socks off.

Well, it's ALWAYS best to not have to size, period. Sometimes you just don't have that option (buying vintage, etc.).. there are levels of "better" and a plain shank going +/- one size isn't going to do any harm that's of practical concern given that it's otherwise well-made and sturdy.
I think the method of sizing will depend on just how much it needs to be sized by. A quarter size could probably be addressed by stretching, or w/ a couple of sizing beads, but I should think going up or down by a half-size or more would require cutting the shank.

My cousin's husband tried to do this! He was very sneaky and tried to determine her ring size and ended up with a 5.5 after a few weeks of calculations and planning. They went on a trip and he proposed. Apparently all very romantic except the 5.5 wouldn't fit on her 7.5 finger. I hope you have better luck than he did!

My husband and I just picked out the ring together and I told him my size. Everything else from the exact ring (he tricked me!) to the timing and location was a complete surprise! And, added bonus, I got to wear my ring right away

Agreed. I am 5'7", weigh 130 and my ring is a 4. It varies wildly! My best friend is 5'4", 117 lbs and a size 7. You just never know.

It's not a perfect solution but they sell ring snuggies on amazon. It's a little piece of rubber that fits around the shank of the ring to make it smaller so she can still wear it temporarily. (long enough to show friends and family) If you guess wrong, it's better to be wrong on the side of too big.

Her hands may be a little larger than you think. Her fingers appeared to 'taper' - thinner at the tops (by the fingernail), not an overly large knuckle and the 'ends' look a bit larger than the knuckle. My hands are actually small, but my fingers are shaped like that and I wear a size 8. Better figure out a way to measure because it looks like the size guesses are all over the place! once you have it, try to age it with some sandpaper and a hammer - then create a little fiction with your GF and say something like "Hey, this was right outside the door, did you drop it?" then use it yourself and tell her your thumb's ring size and then play a little "compare" game, each of you measuring the same finger on your respective hands. Of course, make sure one of the fingers is her ring finger, and make sure you remember the size on her left hand! Then ask her, "Do you want to keep this or just toss it?" so it doesn't seem important.

Another method, if you were fairly sure she was around a certain size but wanted to check if slight above or below, is to buy a simple sterling band in, say, size 7 (or 5 or 6, you get the picture) - and do a similar kind of aging thing to it so it doesn't look brand new and shiny - and then tell her you found it in the trunk of the car and wonder how it got there. Try it on a couple of your fingers, and hand it to her for her try on her fingers - if you picked the right size, it should best fit her ring finger, and you'll be able to tell as she slides it on and off whether it is a bit tight or a bit loose or just right.

What I did was buy her a cheaper dress ring that I knew would need resizing. Then before heading back to the jeweller for the free resize, called them, explained I needed to know her ring size and the sales woman agreed to help by being the "pushy" assistant and tell the GF that she has to know all her finger sizes so this wouldn't happen again. When we arrives she progressively sized every finger and said the size of each as she went and I remembered the one that mattered. The negatives is it'll obviously cost a few hundred more for a cheap ring and a few extra months. Also be carefully to "conditioner" so she doesn't think that this is THE ring before she open it! Maybe she might need a ring for a special outing or Christmas?
Anyway that's what worked for me and the GF hasn't a clue... Even commented that the assistant was pushy when we left! Great. Clueless.

There was a table of wood and bone carved rings. I made a joke about how I was going to buy her a wooden ring so we could tell our grandkids how it was back when we had no money. Anyway they were 3 for $20, and now she has 3 rings which fit her ring finger within easy access.

Problem solved. Now to figure out a setting.

Bear in mind that if the width of the ring is bigger, it fits tighter. So if the wooden ring is about 4mm wide, and the engagement ring shank is thinner, say 2.5mm, then you will need to subtract about 1/4 size from the wooden ring size.

Perfect solution. Now get one asap to a jeweller and they can put it on a mandrel or ring sizing stick and tell you the exact size. Unless of course they told you when she was trying them on what size she was.

I bought a vernier caliped and measured the inside diameter. It came out to 17.21 mm, so I think I'll round up to a size 7.
