Hello everyone,
I think I found a serious contender on the Garrard''s site. Do you think a smaller stone would work? I''m assuming this one is way out of my price range. I''m not sure if I''d stay with the ruby or go with a cushion cut diamond. I haven''t been looking at either so I have no idea what size I can afford.

Who would you recommend to make a similar style setting?

I do think that a smaller stone could work, but it depends on how much smaller. Rubies, in my opinion, are harder to find than a diamond for a really nice one. They also tend to be more expensive when you do find one. There are some other red stones that you may want to consider, such a spinal, but anything in a true, bright red is expensive.

For designers try: Leon, Single Stone, Maytal Hannah, or if you're looking for a stock setting, Beverly K is the closest I can think of right now.

That is a beautiful ring! And I agree that a good ruby will cost more than a diamond, so I''d stick with a cushion diamond for that project if it is for an e-ring. Leon and Maytal would be the two I''d contact about creating a similar setting. But have you contacted the source of that ring to see if the setting can be purchased for a stone you would supply? Its''s almost always best to buy the real thing when you find something specific that you want.

I called them this morning, the ring as pictured is a 5.42 carat ruby -- total cost -- (deep breath) $450,000. She said they could make it with a smaller cushion or ruby but did a disapproving pause when I mentioned my budget. Sigh. I expected as much. She said it would be a couple of days to hear back on the price, so there''s still hope.

If that router doesn''t work, I''ll see what a repro will cost.
