If you go there without knowing anyone they will eat you alive. that being Said
James Allen, IDJ and GOG are all PS vendors in NY although GOG is in Long island.
I have a friend Havey Nagin that is awesome at 66 Wesst 47th Street Nagin Jewelry. If you want to start with him....
However do your homework on line here look at the James Allen Website as you can see the stones and if you want you can see them at their B&M store.
You'd over all do better shopping on line the PSers will help you select the perfect diamond for you. If you are going in two weeks
Tell us your budget and what you want. Shape, Size what matters more color or clarity CUT is the most important then you have to see how color sensitive you are.

In my experience, the experienced buyer can get a great deal on 47th, but the person who is buying for the first time will be better off online, simply because it's a lower-pressure situation where you get a chance to think and compare.
There are wonderful honest dealers on 47th who've never in all their long years gone near a computer, who take a lot of pride in providing wonderful objects to people who will love them forever for a fair price. There are online companies that are at this very moment trying to convince buyers to buy valuable engineering-based over-water real-estate connecting to Brooklyn. And, you know, vice versa.
I'd say if you want a vintage piece, 47th might be a better place to look: if you want a contemporary piece, like Heidi said, post your desired specs here, and let's see what we can help you find!
