Talked to Sam down at Blue Nile
he said that the diamonds they have are NOT priced by value
but by how much they purchased them for.

Makes sense...

So you cant just up the color and drop the clarity, it doesn't work that way?

Not always... On average, true, but what you found is a legitimate exception to the rule

And a cute little opportunity, if you asked me. Yeah, OK... I/VS sounds better in theory than J/VVS, but there is no guarantee there will be one for the price. And I1-2 clarity is a whole different animal because unlike the higher grades (including SI2 for what that matters) the respective stones have only a slim chance of looking clean.

One more thing... the smaller the diamonds, the less color is apparent: so 5 cts J princess would be very much more tinted than .5cts J color princess.

My 2c
About the setting... would a solitaire work? You don't have to match the initial ring - that just happened. I feel that trying to find a good price for a setting with sidestones will end up with a low quality thing... because the setting itself is a more complicated object because of the sidestones etc. Better a simpler but better made ring, IMO - but this is a matter of opinion, of course.

Here is a question: what makes you think your gf is going to want a "big" poorly cut diamond instead of a well-cut, slightly smaller diamond? Once she sees her bad stone side by side next to someone who has a well-cut stone, she''s going to feel sad and disappointed that her stone is dull and lifeless compared to others. Size isn''t everything. She may think you didn''t care enough to find her a quality stone. And if I thought my husband bought my engagement ring off ebay, I''d be disgusted.

Do yourself a favor. Go into a mall store that has different quality cuts. Ben Bridge is a good one. Ask to see one of their "signature" cuts next to a "generic" diamond. Look at them side by side. The difference will be apparant even to you. Then, expect the diamond ring you are considering to be as bad or worse than the "generic" you looked at in the store.

Thanks... your a little late, I have already ditched the EBAY idea 100%
Everyone here is right, that would have been a terrible idea!

I am looking now at whiteflash, DCD, and bluenile
and looking for something between the .8 - 1.0 carat range instead of
1.0-1.3

I found a few that I like, I have moved the thread here if you would like
to offer more advice, and see what I have moved on to!

Thanks!
