Im looking for an affordable engagement ring for my girl.
I have been all over this site and bluenile.com learning about diamonds.
I know most people say stay away from Ebay diamond vendors.
The ring I found is not from a "vendor" persay but more of an independant seller.
This is the information I have so far.

Princess Cut 1.06 Carat
Color I-J (from talking to her)
Clarity VS2-SI1 (from talking to her) leaning towards an VS2 (small feather in center of stone)
5.2 x 5.5 x 4.2 (approx) diamond is mounted and hard to determine depth.
I understand this depth is a bit large 80% plus but I also understand you cannot determine anything from that alone.

In a platinum setting with .20 carats of baguettes on the side.

Total price 2650 + ship.

My question to all of you, is should I jump on this, or run away?
3 day return policy.
Seller has 99.8% positive feedback on 593 transactions
Name LorriMichelle
Graduate of the GIA

HELP!!!

RUN

ETA: Graduate of the GIA? In What?? a three day class? If she was a Graduate Gemologist, she would have said so. Just from that you can tell she is not an honest person.

And when will people learn that you get what you pay for??

E(again)TA: Sorry for being harsh, in cranky mood today.

It's probably not a good idea. I wouldn't do it.

If you let us know what you're looking for, we can help find you something beautiful.

Don''t do it!!! I would rather buy a stone from one of the recommended PS vendors!!!

393 is not a private seller.

593 feedback is a vendor. RUN!

What Im saying is she doesnt sell 1000 of rings a month.

Im looking for a 1 carat princess cut stone in a platinum setting with tapered baguettes on the side.
around 4,000 dollars.

run away. depth sounds scarily deep. it will look tiny.

I-J/Vs2/Si1 clarity? there are huge differences in price in those. you will probably end up with a KI1 for that price. Or perhaps it is clarity enhanced.

3 days is NOT a fair inspection period either.
Do you really think you just happened to encounter a fantastic deal?

Run far away. Seriously.

Uhh... she is a "power seller" on ebay.

She is saying J in color, but closer to I than K
SI1 is the clarity, but closer to VS2 than SI2

Its impossible to really tell the depth due to the mounting.
It was bought at an estate sale.

Yes, I guess I did figure that I found a great deal? I guess Im wrong.

For those who recommend pricescope vendors, you cant touch a ring like this for under 5000

Also how can you say that it will look tiny? 5.2 x 5.5 is standard for a 1.0 carat princess cut, isnt it?

Thanks for all your help

Im a power seller as well, doesnt make me a vendor!
I sell computer componants and my feedback is over 200
doesnt make me a shiester.

Just trying to play devils advocate here.

There is a reason it is so cheap. It is probably not the greatest quality. If it was a good quality then why would she be selling it for so much less than it is worth?? That just doesn''t make sense. it sounds like you are really set on this, but I think the advice you are going to get is to run away!! Get a smaller but more sparkly one! Also, does it have any certification or are you just going on what she says it is?

Since she is not specific about color or clarity, I assume she does not have a GIA certificate. Also the three day return period does not give you much time to have it appraised and send it back.
Is this a private sale? If you are not going through Ebay and paying through Paypal you lose all protection.

It is very likely that this is a similar situation to the previous Ebay experience. I would not take a chance in any case.

Ianmac, I have feedback of 200 as well, but I don''t sell diamonds. If someone makes their living selling diamonds, you know they''ll make something off you. Possibly a lot. Possibly a lot more than they should.

suit yourself, but consider yourself warned... I wouldn''t do it. there is a reason you can''t find a similar stone for less than almost twice the price.
I don''t know a lot about princesses but I know that 5.2-5.5 should be about the same diameter as an ideal cut one that is smaller, like this one; This whiteflash one will appear bigger.

Well, first of all, I wouldn''t buy a diamond ring from Ebay, so I can''t advise you to do that. Also, an I or J colored princess will very likely show some color. Maybe that doesn''t bother you, but I personally wouldn''t go below an H for a fancy colored stone. Yes, I guess this ring comes pretty cheap, but there''s no GIA report to know what the color and clarity really is. You seem like you''ve already made the decision to buy this ring, so I''m not sure why you even asked for advice. You seem to be rejecting everyone''s advice anyway.

indecisive- that looks like an awesome stone. It will appear bigger and more sparkly than the one on ebay, I am willing to bet!

seriously some people just don''t learn. they always think THEIR deal is going to be the best one and work out while everyone else around them just got shafted. you obviously have read up on the other eBay sagas.

have fun with that!!

Thank you very much. This is what I am looking for.
Alternatives.

I am not 100% set on this ring, but I dont want to give up just because I know everyone here has a negative bias of ebay.
She is pretty solid on her rating.. I just knew everyone would say her J could be a K

It would be thru ebay, and I would have Paypal Buyer protection.

If you want to get a good deal and care less about the quality of the stone, you should consider visiting estate stores and pawn shops in your area. That''s probably where that seller got the ring from anyway. You will cut out the middleman, and you will at least see the ring in person before buying. FWIW, that''s a deep deep stone that will probably show a lot of yellow and not much sparkle b/c it''s not well cut.

RUN FAR AWAY! AS FAST AS YOU CAN!

The stone seems very deep and the price seems too good to be true!

Correct me if I am wrong, but when you get a certified, or ideal stone
your paying a LOT more for it then if it wasnt certified?

I would rather have a larger stone, than a piece of paper grading my stone.

I do like that .7 carat but ALMOST 5.0 in diameter
is a big difference from 5.5

Why risk it? You''re putting down a lot of cash for something that someone without any credentials is promising you. There was JUST a thread (that''s still on the first page of Rocky Talky) about this exact same thing. They bought from ebay, thought they were getting a deal and guess what? They''re having a hell of a time sending it back.

Surprise, surprise. Seriously, if you''ve got time to waste, go for it. But we can help you get something of quality. Something that has actual grades (not J OR K, VS2 OR SI1).

if the stone doesn''t have a certificate, then how do you know what you are getting? It''s kind of like buying a car that doesn''t have a working odometer and taking the car dealer''s word that it only has 45,000 miles on it. Maybe 60,000 miles, but it is hard to tell. Would you buy it if you didn''t know much about cars and couldn''t look at it before you bought it?

I also have a EGL USA certified stone lined up thru a friend at www.leofrank.com
SI2
I
1.18 Carat
78% table
75% depth

for 3374.80
I would be better off with this eh?

Maybe or maybe not. I personally will only buy a diamond with a GIA or AGS report. If you don''t care that much about cut, there''s quite a few diamonds on the ps search for about the price and size you''re looking for. Here''s one at random:

Wow... you all seem to be diamond connisours.
Im just looking for a BIG SPARKLY stone.

Just couldn''t bear another "I''ve been screwed by E-Bay" thread so soon after the last one...
