No worries, Harriet-we''ll shop next time I''m in your neck of the woods. For some reason, I suspected that you were out of town. I hope that you are enjoying Miami.

If you are game to play travel agent, I would love to bounce a few things off of you. Here''s the plan:
-Arrive Wed about 3-4 in midtown. See a show Wed night. Maybe dinner at the Japanese place you suggested or BBQ.
-Thursday morning is a Circle Line tour and ds wants to see the military ship and aircraft at SS Seaport. Lunch somewhere nearby? Not sure about the afternoon.
-Friday morning is open (maybe Natural History Museum?)and then I take my dd to the American Girl Place for a birthday lunch. After lunch, I''m thinking about the Natural History Museum or the Empire State Bldg. but I have to check the map first, my geography is bad and I don''t want to be heading across town in Friday traffic.
-The other thing I want to fit in somewhere is Rockefeller Ctr (the deck up top) and Central Park (not all day, just a couple of hrs).

What do you think? I''d like to arrange the Nat Hist Museum, the Empire State Bldg, and Central Park somewhere in there- Thurs afternoon, Friday before or after lunch, or Saturday. Any thoughts? I also want to hit a couple of sweet shops along the way and not overdo the scheduling.

Other possibilities are dinner in Little Italy or somewhere interesting (any suggestions for online restaurant research?). I haven''t exactly been on top of the cuisine which is not at all like me-usually I am all about the eating!

I hope this isn''t too much info. I''ll appreciate any suggestions you might have. It''s great to have a local in the loop!
Heheh. Am I ever enjoying life here!

Tips:
1. If you''re catching a show, have dinner beforehand and take advantage of the pre-dinner specials.
2. Since you have some downtime on Thursday, do do one of the other activities you want.
3. For Friday, the Empire State Building is better, since the AMNH is on the West side.
4. I''d stay away from Little Italy. Try www.menupages.com for menus.

Ask away if you have more questions!

Thanks for the input-very helpful. I''m leaning toward dinner at Sugiyama as I think we will all enjoy not only the food but the experience. Do you know of anything fun and/or worth eating near the Seaport? I haven''t been there before but I am guessing touristy? Thanks for the tip on Little Italy. What would you do instead for a fun and funky neighborhood? Meatpacking District? Soho?

Thank you very much for the lead and the introduction. I have touched base with him and look forward to a visit. I promise to look at some pretties for you, too!

Sugiyama has a pre-theatre menu. I''m afraid I don''t know the Seaport area well. I think Soho will be more fun for the kiddles.

I promise to ask Michael to steer me away from the ones you''ve been eyeing. I''m really looking forward to meeting him.

We had a great dinner at Suigiyama last night-we all loved it. I had to explain to the kids how i found it through my PS friend and personal tour advisor who lives here and that tomorrow we''ll stop at one of the sweet shops you recommended. They thought the whole thing was pretty cool. We also had a stereotypical NYC cabdriver experience which made for some fun and an interesting little adventure. Walked around Times Square after the show (Wicked was terrific) and the kids were awed. Having a great time and the weather is supposed to be just beautiful for the next few days.

Speaking of weather, what''s shaking in Miami? Glad to hear you are enjoying yourself.

When will you be meeting Michael? He''s a dear.

Did you like the Sugiyama dessert? Will you be going to Dylan''s? They''ll love it. Uh oh. What happened on the ride?

Nothing''s shaking -- there''s too much silicone. Kidding! Sigh, if only Manhattan had a beach like South Beach.

Just arrived home this afternoon. I''m sorry to have been offline but we were so busy seeing your lively city that I didn''t get to the computer. We had a wonderful time and are already thinking about our next trip.

Sugiyama was such a lot of fun, and delicious too!. They sat us at that lovely table in the front window and the kids loved watching the street traffic. We eat sushi fairly often but nothing like the experience of the traditional Japanese dinner. I was thinking about that dessert this morning, yummy!

Thursday we did a short Circle Line tour which was more enjoyable than I expected and then hung out at the Strand bookstore for a while. We walked to the Empire State Bldg and did the obligatory visit to the deck. The day was clear and the views great. We spent a beautiful day in Central Park Saturday with a couple of hours at the AMNH (we''ll have to go back, there''s so much to see and do!). Along the way we managed to squeeze in Grand Central Station and a NYC subway ride, lots of walking and wandering, some shopping, some fun meals and great sweets (Maison du Chocolat, Crumbs). Dylan''s was a huge hit with kids-probably their favorite. They also marveled at the activity in Times Square well past their bedtimes. They loved the plays (Wicked and Phantom) and staying in a "real New York apartment". It was fun to see it all through their eyes.

The night we arrived, we hopped a taxi to Sugiyama and our driver ran a light whereupon a man on the street proceeded to insult him, yelling "in America we call that a red light and we stop". At this, the driver stopped short, backed up and proceeded to tell the guy to "mind your own f@#*ing business" and a string of other expeetives. After he moved on, he looked in the rearview mirror and sheepishly apologized. When we met dh at the restaurant it was the first thing the kids told him! We all had a good laugh and explained to the kids that they were lucky enough to get two stereotypical NY experiences at once: the New Yorker who speaks his mind and the foul-mouthed cabbie!

The only missed opportunity the whole trip was that Michael and I didn''t connect. We traded phone messages but couldn''t quite make it work. I''m thinking that it just gives me something to look forward to next time. Maybe we can go together, after all!

Glad you are enjoying Miami. It sounds like you are seeing all of the "sights". We have our share of silicone in my town, too. Probably not nearly as much as Miami but it does make for interesting people watching.

Thanks so much for all of your tips, ideas and advice. I really appreciate the trip planning help. Dh and the kids loved hearing about "Harriet''s suggestions" and got a kick out of how you and I "know" each other. It was a great time all around.

Hi lady. How are you doing? I am so excited. I bought a tsavorite tonight. They had a Stuller diamond / gemstone show at the mall and I got a .90 modified square tsavorite. It''s .90 ct. 5.89 x 5.86 mm. It''s one of their black box gemstones whatever that means. I am having it mounted in a thick gold solitaire band. I have been looking for an emerald cut diamond for a RHR ring but when I saw the tsavorite tonight I changed my mind. I knew you loved tsavorites so I thought I would tell you.
36.gif
I hope to pick it up tomorrow but DH will probably wrap it and put it up for my birthday next month. Rats.

Gayle, Marcy,
I have to run, but I''d like to congratulate Marcy first.
36.gif
I''ll be back in a few days.

Have fun! I am already suffering buyer''s remorse. I always stress over spending money then wonder did I really like it that well. Oh siilly me. Once I see it again I will be all right.

Update: I went to the mall about 7:30 hoping to pick up my tsavorite ring. The salesgirl I bought it from wasn''t there but another girl who knows me went in the back to look for it. The tsavorite hadn''t been mounted yet. Since it was a custom ring from the diamond show they said the jeweler would still get it done tonight. I told them not to hurry it or rush it. I left with a funny feeling and I was right because about an hour later they called me to say the jeweler broke the stone. It is a Stuller Black Box and she said they could get me a stone in next week but I am seriously considering going out there tomorrow and getting my money back. Their jeweler and I haven''t had much luck in the past. She sat on mounting my mint garnets in studs for so long they finally sent them out to another store - they told me she was afraid of breaking them. At the same time I had them mount a mint garnet in a pendant. The first day I wore the pendant the chain broke and I lost the pendant. They agreed to replace the pendant because of a faulty chain but the mint garnet took about 6 months for them to get it. I finally get the pendant back and was cleaning it before taking care of it that night and the stone fell out of the setting. I took it back and they fixed it. So at this point I have NO faith in that jeweler. Based on how long it took them to get me a "okay" mint garnet I don''t want to have my money tied up for months waiting for a tsavorite. I should have realized this was a bad idea last night; they couldn''t find a head that fit it very well last night. They wanted to put a square stone in a round basket and I said no. So they were going to use a basic Tiffany style but had to cut down the prongs. Rats. Back to the drawing board.

Gayletmom,

Yay! That means I have a second chance to meet you.

Did you have that grapefruit-wine jelly with cream?

Did you buy anything at the Strand? It''s a fun place to explore. What did you think about La Maison?

Haha. Be thankful that you got the foul-mouthed cabby and not the foul-smelling one.

You''re most welcome. Again, I hope to have a second chance to meet you.

P.S. Please tell me you didn''t tell Michael my username. It''s awful.

Marcy,
I''d tell them to take a hike too. Is that what you''ve done? It''s still a bummer though.

Steve,
Thanks for your suggestion (clue?). The only possibility at ParaibaI costs an arm and a leg.

Loved the grapefruit thing. It sounded odd but tasted yummy! I also thought that La Maison was great. It reminded me of a jewelry store for chocolate! We got several things to try and nibbled on them all day.

Michael had such nice things to say about you! I didn''t call you Harriet but he did mention your name, in a very complimentary way. Said how much he enjoyed talking to another jewelry nut. I''m also looking forward to meeting you next time. The good news is that I usually go to NY without the kids so we''ll have even more time for fun.

How was Miami? Are you back? Were you doing some fun stuff there?

Me too! You should visit Pierre Marcolini.

Michael''s a dear. He shepherded me around my first Tucson show, and I''m very grateful to him. When''s the next time?

Miami is wonderful. There have been five shark sightings, though. Haha. I''m still here. I attempted to go snorkelling off Key West, but freaked out. Other than that, I''ve been vegging out on the beach.

Dear Gayletmom and Harriet...I don't know what got me started on reading this thread. I do not usually read Who's Who threads, although Harriet's would be where I would start if I ever were to do so. Somehow, in the middle of the night, I got involved in this thread, however. I have read and reread the last two pages...and I cannot decide where the grapefruit dessert can be found. Is it at Sugiyama? One would think that I was about to run right out to order one. I mean, my urgency to know where to find it is such that one would think that I needed one immediately! Yet here I sit in a nightshirt in Virginia!

Please put me out of my misery and tell me where one finds such a dessert. I will never order one, since I never go to Manhattan, but I will feel better :-).

Thank you. And thank you for sharing your adventures in the thread. You have entertained me although I am not sure why I am awake ;-).

Deb

Deb, my dear friend,
I'm honoured by your 'visit.' Yes, the grapefruit dessert is to be found at Sugiyama. It's a strange concoction of spiked grapefruit jello topped by creme fraiche, but is surprisingly tasty. Come to Manhattan and we'll go to Sugiyama. If you like sushi, I think they have the best in town, even though they are not sushi specialists.

Hi Harriet. That is what I did. Now I have been searching for an EC diamond for a RHR. Sadly that search may have come to an end we need a new TV. Rats. How the heck are you doing?

Hi Deb,

Glad to have you chiming in! Harriet sent me to Sugiyama when I was in NY a couple of weeks ago. The dessert was not the only thing that was yummy. The sushi and the other things were all delicious and the experience was terrific. They do a traditional Japanese meal with several courses and it really is a fun presentation.

I hope you make it!

Hi Harriet,

Vegging out on the beach sounds pretty good to me! Read a good book and think of me, will you?

I''ll probably be back in NY in the Fall. The summer is looking pretty booked with kids activities and a family beach trip but I hope to be up your way in not too many months.

I''ll look forward to meeting you then,
Gayle

Hi Gayle,

Oh dear, I''m not exactly reading Booker-winning fiction, but I will think of you.

I''m very much looking forward to meeting you in the Fall. We''ll go bother Michael together.

Hi, Harriet! 32 pages?! I have some reading to do! I like your new avatar, BTW. Awesome!

It''s heavily pixellated. Are you a computer whiz?

I wish.

Not a computer whiz, but I love your ring and was playing with a picture of it yesterday. The attachment should be suitable for your avatar :) My cousin is in Manhattan and I visit every couple of years, so I like checking your thread to get ideas for places to eat for future visits.
