A friend of mine is going to begin the search for a gift for his wife.

I have not been on the hunt for some time and was wondering if anyone would be able to suggest a good budget for him.

He is looking for an OEC, 1ct, J-K in color and eye clean. He would like to set the stone set in a simple rose gold solitaire setting. Thanks so much :)

Just spoke with my friend again and he is now looking at a budget of $2600.00, do any of you old cut gurus think this would be a doable budget for his specifications? Or would he need to increase his budget?

I think that depends--would he be open to a pre-loved stone? Or a pre-loved ring with a 1ct OEC in it? If so, Jewels by Grace might have some options, but 2600 is a bit low for a 1ct in general. Here's one option, but it's a whole ring and not quite within budget:

Here are two more from diamonds by lauren--they are a bit "funky" insofar as they aren't entirely symmetrical, but I think they are beautiful anyway :)

EDIT: bah ignore my first option, since I didn't read the "rose gold solitaire setting" part in your first post. But the bottom diamonds are still an option!

That budget is not realistic, no. I'd suggest an antique ring with smaller diamonds in it. Is $2600 the total with the setting?

I believe he is thinking $2600 for the stone.

He just sent me a link to one, but the stone looks much further down the color scale to me and the stone has no grading certificate. I will post it as soon as he decides one way or another, so no lurkers snipe it from him.

Stones without certificates will be several grades out (a lot) at that price, he needs to get a valuer or someone to look at the stone if it doesn't come with a certificate unless he is not worried about colour.

He either needs to go down in size, increase his budget or be O.K with a lowered coloured stone.

Just a quick update

He has it narrowed down to two stones, they are both a little over a carat.
1) K color, VS2, eye clean, nice cut and symmetry
2) F color, SI1, a few whispy white feathers-nothing too distracting, cut not as nice

i really like the cut on the first, but am worried it will be too warm for them, but the cut on the second stone just doesn't do it for me. Ultimately his decision, but I'm wondering how much I should push the cut issue with him?

There's no way to really know what the receiver is going to value - color over cut. I value cut, and all of the Ks I've owned/seen have faced up plenty white, but different people have different color sensitivity. I would probably lean towards better cut because really at the end of the day does she want a white dead looking diamond? Probably not.
