Nowadays, do most brides buy or rent their wedding dress?

Re: Nowadays, do most brides buy or rent their wedding dress

I bought mine from a pre-owned wedding dress site. Some of the dresses on the site were samples, some had been worn once and some had never been worn or altered. Mine had been worn once and was in perfect condition.

My SIL rented a dress in Vegas. She wasn't thrilled with it but I thought it was lovely. She said it had a few stains on the hem that the store said couldn't be removed. She also said there weren't many options. The dress she wore had a corset back so I think it could be easily adjusted for various sizes. I guess it all depends on where you rent the dress but I thought it was a good option.

But then that lovely mother-daughter experience of showing the wedding dress to your little girl would be lost!!

Not everyone who marries has a daughter, or even has children. In my town, virtually NOBODY who is pregnant or birthing a baby is even married. The welfare benefits to low-income people are better for a single mom than a married couple, and many of those women would never marry the baby-daddy even if he proposed! Conversely, most of the married people I know have zero or perhaps one child. Most of the young people I know who are marrying are saddled with college loans and struggling to get by, and are planning zero or one child, only.

I actually think rent the wedding dress is a fantastic idea. I would have rented one IF I could have rented a fantastic $6000 designer gown, but no local place rented gowns. I sewed my own, hand-beaded Alencon lace and satin rosebuds and satin fabric roses and all, not a darned sequin on it anyplace. Beading the lace was the most time-consuming part. And now it's stored in a box someplace. LOL

I bought mine at a sample sale. I consigned it for resale 3 weeks after my wedding. There is no guarantee that I will have a daughter to pass it on to, and even then, it's very likely that she will want to buy her own gown.

My SIL and some of DH's cousins rented their gowns. I would've rent, but we had two receptions and renting twice would probably end up being the same as the gown I bought. I believe that the gown is sewn in but not cut, so it can be taken out and lengthen. The only alteration I needed for my gown was shortening it, so I can see people fitting into gown without a lot of alterations.

I bought mine, but both dresses were under 1k each.

I bought my dress, but made a deal with my SO that I wouldn't spend a lot if he got me the ring I wanted. He did, so I used my Cash Back from my credit card to pay for the dress in full (just under $1200)! Yay! Win-win!

Oh! And I got to wear it twice -- once for our ceremony in Mexico, and again once we were back home for the reception.

I had a rental gown for "pre-wedding" photo session, and I also bought one for the big day. I thought it was a great idea, since dh didn't get to see my actual wedding gown for the pre-wedding portrait photo session. Oh, and the photo session was at a Chinese studion in Temple city, CA. I think rentals are more common in the Asian culture.
