First post but I've been lurking/researching for a few weeks now. I am just starting to become comfortable with the different terminology, etc.

It seems like there have been some favorable reviews for USA Certed and I was going through their database. Just randomly searching and put in 2c to see... and there are many listed under $5K, even one for $4K that is Ideal Cut EGL and Hearts & Arrows. Now, I'm definitely a newbie, but isn't H&A top of the line and Ideal the best (eventho its an EGL Cert)?

Item Stock Shape Carat Color Clarity Available Scans Price Cost/Carat Cert Notes
1 1012-15446089 RB 2.00 G I1 3745 1872 EGL IDEAL PLUS H&A
2 1012-15366589 RB 2.00 I SI3 5670 2835 EGL IDEAL PLUS H&A
3 1012-15298698 RB 2.26 I I1 7944 3515 GIA

Not sure if we can post links, so sry if not but the 3 are:

How is that first one even possible?
G I1 Ideal EGL H&A 2c

Then below that 2.26c I I1 GIA looks interesting, but no cut info.

What am I missing here? Thanks!

Quite a few problems actually...It's extremely deep @ 65.4% with a diameter of 7.73mm for a 2ct stone! It's rated G/I1 by EGL - from what I've read, they are usually a couple (if not more) of grades off compared to GIA. I wouldn't consider anything other than a GIA 3X or AGS 000. Run like the wind!

If it seems too good to be true, it's too good to be true.

HAHA, because it is an I3 and cut like glass. Basically ordering a $4,000 piece of carbon.

There are likely to be many eye visible inclusions. You get what you pay for in the diamond world.

Not possible!

Clarity does make a difference. No one wants their diamond to look speckled. At least not for an ering- well then again there was that one ring on WeddingBee.com that was 8 cts and looked liked cotton candy floss 8) I don't mind included diamonds (pending inclusions) for RHR's though.

Reminds me of our Leopard Diamond thread, LOL! Sometimes the inclusions can provide an interesting effect, but probably not something you'd pick for an engagement ring. :D

My local mall jeweler, every year in time for Christmas, always stocks a couple of I2 2ct RB diamonds that they are asking $3000 - $4000 form. Ye gods! I always wonder just who the heck would buy or wear them. On the other hand, several times I've been suckered into asking for a closer inspection of some decently-cut diamond in a pawn shop, only to see that it has obvious inclusions at close range. 'And several times, I have looked at old vintage dinner cocktail rings that have a large center diamond, only to see it has a huge black inclusion in it. I surmise that maybe if you are only going to wear it in dimly lit rooms at parties where it's only seen t arm's length or better, why pump a lot of money into it.

Stick with GIA Excellent cut or AGS Ideal cut. I only use vendors that supply pictures of the stones and idealscope images such as Good Old Gold and WhiteFlash.

And I just have to add in a picture of my I2 as no one would ever know. But it definitely cost way way way more then 3-4k.

my 2ct MRB that is I2 due to twinning wisps.

I just wanted to jump in as I just bought a 2ct stone from Martin at USA Certed, Mine was over 10k and was an EGL XXX E/SI2. There is nothing wrong with EGL stones if the fit your price range and requirements. Martin will ship to a appraiser for you to view the stone and will take it back if you don't approve. It is safer to buy GIA but there is definitely no need to run from EGL. I was able to save some money buying from Martin vs other sites for a similar value stone.

These stones are probably not what you are looking for but I would strongly consider calling Martin and telling him what you are interested in, he has access to a lot of stones and can help you in your search.

Not 100% sure, but the report numbers at the links do not appear to be EGL USA numbers. Also, only EGL uses SI3, so start by calling those I1.

Simply start ramping the clarity and color down until the diamonds seem overpriced. That will tell you what they are really selling. There's no rule for how far off EGL Israel will be. It may take six or seven downgrades before the diamonds reach their true, overpriced rating.

EGL stones are overpriced. I'm sure there are exceptions, but for practical purposes you can assume they are overpriced. The market applies a discount to EGL stones. Last I heard it was about 2.5 grades. If the grading is off by fewer than 2.5 grades, the seller will send it to GIA. If the grading is off by more than 2.5 grades, it will be sold as an EGL. So even if EGL typically grades only two grades off, it doesn't matter. The stones are not worth selling with the EGL certificate unless they are off at least 2.5 grades.
