I came across this ring on eBay but the facets look quite big, just wondering if it is an antique cut? There’s not much info in the description :

Stunning solitaire diamond ring. In excellent condition ready to be given as a gift! The diamond is just over 2 cts and is J-K colour VS2-SI1 clarity. This is a fabulous ring for an amazing price.

Thanks

Yes - the flower pattern to the top of the table & visible culet would indicate it’s an OEC. Very pretty!

huh.

yes an antique OEC.

sounds like a sales pitch...

It’s an “old European cut” antique stone. Likely warmer than a J-K. But this looks like a potentially pretty cut. I’d check it out, with the caveat that it’s not necessarily a good price if it’s labeled incorrectly for color/clarity/carat. The setting looks modern.

Thanks. I thought it looked like an OEC but then maybe not as it wasn’t in the item description. It’s listed for £6250 GBP or best offer.

I’m not sure whether or not to go for it as I like the idea of a larger carat antique cut, (but then would be unsure of the exact colour/clarity) or if I should get a 1.5 brilliant modern cut which seems to be the largest size certified diamond I could get for this price, in which case the lowest colour I would want is a J and I would opt for an excellent cut. But then I could be sure of exactly what it is!

That’s my dilemma.

I should also add that I would have it reset into a yellow gold setting, am I right in thinking that yellow gold would mask the warmer colour somewhat?

Personally I wouldn’t want to mask the colour. Certainly yellow gold will help “blend in” the diamond & a white metal will emphasise the colour. But the OEC cut versus a MRB are extremely different performers. I would suggest you maybe find an antique jewellery shop & look at an OEC in person before committing that amount of money. For me, I am extremely colour sensitive when it comes to diamonds & own only D, E & F’s. Others hate the icy look to those grades & like more tint. If I were to buy an OEC though, I would definitely want a lower colour. They are so old world, dreamy & romantic. But I really would check out anything of this value before committing, or ensure they have a great return policy.

Keep us posted - this is an exciting purchase!

Yes. OEC! Beautiful!

It’s very pretty. I like the warmer colors myself. You could buy and have it weighed.... did the seller have a good return policy?

The other pictures on the auction were less yellow and looked like it would be worth looking at.. except the seller offers no returns! So you’d want to request additional pictures to be comfortable with the colour of you did go ahead with buying it

Yes its an oec, but just from the picture there is no evidence it is antique they are still being cut today.

Maybe you could negotiate a return policy at your expense. For such a large purchase it’s a lot of risk for you and I don’t think it’s unreasonable of you to request.

I’ve had to return 2 of 2 old cut diamond rings in the past year I bought on eBay, as they did not perform as I expected/needed them to. This is despite me being totally convinced from the eBay pics that they were each my dream stone. They were a lot smaller than 2cts but I would have been devastated if I’d been stuck with them. I had to wear the 15% import taxes and other customs fees too but I couldn’t keep them.

It may be a cracker and you may get lucky but if the price is too good to be true... if you can’t agree on a more favourable return policy and you purchase it anyway, be mentally prepared. If you couldn’t bare the disappointment, maybe consider a reputable PS vendor.

Also the fact they didn’t bother to describe it in detail is a little worrisome.

Color is good!
