I would prefer something like this. The crown and pavilion angles in the stones you posted are not as complimentary IMO. This is a bit above the price range you were looking at but the color/clarity combo is good and the cut is as good as they come.

Thanks a ton for your response missgotrocks :) When you say the crown and pavilion angles are not complimentary, can you elaborate please? This is all new to me and I'd love to be educated in a sense. Thanks again :)

TONS of lurkers here.

Plug in the numbers in the HCA tool. You want the score to be 2 or under. The HCA tool can be found under "tools" in the top right of the page.

or, just post what size, color, etc that you are looking for and your budget. Everyone will find you some nice stones!

The first stone has a pavilion angle greater than 41 - it will get dinged on the HCA for that. The crown angle is only 33 - preferably you'd like to see a crown angle of greater than 34 with a pavilion angle around 41.

The second stone has a 36+ crown angle and while the pavilion angle is much lower to help compliment and offset that crown, it's still not in the ideal range. That's not to say that neither diamond would be pretty; it's just that if you are looking for killer cut you've sort of missed the mark. I'm not trying to be critical but rather point out that there are better cut stones out there.

There is a ton of reading here to be found for guidelines to look for. It also doesn't hurt to call some of the PS vendors to tell them what you are looking for. They can help guide you to make a great purchase that balances out color, clarity, cut and price. Some of them - and not all of them - include Whiteflash, GoodOldGold, ID Jewelry, James Allen. I think between them all, you'll find some nice contenders.

Great advice! Thanks a ton. You have now educated me on the HCA tool. Here is a diamond I found on blue nile I input all the numbers and it scores a 2.1 Would love to hear your opinion on this stone and would love to here any negatives and why? Thanks in advance!
