New to the diamond world and appreciate your advice

Hello out there. I'm shopping for an engagement ring and I have my eye on one in diamond in particular. As I know very little about diamonds (beyond spending a few hours on online), I'd like your input. Price for the stone is $5k. Here are the details from the GIA Cert:

Shape and cut: Round Brilliant
Measurements: 6.48 - 6.53 x 4.01 mm
Weight: 1.06 carats

Depth: 61.6%
Table: 66%
Girdle: Very thin to medium
Cutlet: None

Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good

Clarity: VS2
Color: H
Fluorescence: medium blue

Other - Crown angles are greater than 35%

I'd be interested in getting an opinion on whether $5,000 is a good price for this diamond and what effect the crown angles will have.

No, it's gonna be a bad performer and prone to chipping!

You don't need VS2. You don't need H color.

And you don't need a full carat. A poorly cut diamond at one carat will look smaller than a 85 point diamond that is ideal cut for light performance.

As for crown angles.... you are starting at the wrong place.

There's something bizarre.

Crown angles greater than 35% or degrees? Crown angles greater than 35 degrees is very common and not something GIA comments on. I assume it is a very old report, or it is some kind of non standard round brilliant.

JA has a great return policy. And can pull the diamond and have a gemologist look at it for you.

We have lots of lurkers looking in your price range. Put the diamond on hold ASAP. It's no obligation. Just a precaution. And you can do it through the "Expert/Chat now" function on the site.


THIS ONE might be a find.

AND it will be eyeclean (to the naked eye you won't be able to tell it from a VVS1). BUT there is a feather near the girdle. SO-- PUT ON HOLD and ask them to have their gemologist tell you if the feather poses a risk to safety. They will tell you honestly. It it does NOT pose a risk to safety, get an idealscope.

The HCA is over 2.0 but it is under 3 and the idealscope my show great performance. AND it's TOTALLY under budget.

Another option. Safer than any of the others that are OVER a carat that I've posted.

And I will tell you true, that a J colored stone with ideal light performance will look whiter face up than a poorly cut H.

Cut and light return are really where you need to be focusing.

At 5k for a round stone something has to give.

Your choices are generally going to be as follows:

90 points H color SI1. Carat gives.
1 carat I SI2. Clarity gives.
1 carat J SI1. Color gives.

Is you budget firm at 5,000 and under? Because at 6k you don't have to sacrifice anything really.

Do you have a GIA number? I'm still curious if this is a fancy round brilliant or if it is an old report, or what.
