Hello all,

I have been lurking on the website and have found the forums to be rather helpful. Soon to be engaged, me and my partner have a tight budget. The budget for both the the wedding band and engagement ring is $2500 max, and given neither of us have previous experience with this, not sure how much to attribute to engagement ring and how much to the wedding band. But below are some things I want and hopefully you can guide me in how to break the budget and maybe even suggests diamonds and settings?

* A diamond with clarity of VS2 or higher. I know SI1 can be eye clean, but having no experience, I don't know if I should trust either of us to judge what is "eye clean" so I'm thinking we should err on the safe side?

* Color of I or higher

* Cut of Very good to Excellent/Ideal

* Carat size - i have no idea what I can get for our money, but my finger size is 8.5.

* For the band, though I realize I may need to go with a plain solitaire, if I could something a bit more "intricate" I wouldn't say no. Like a pavé maybe. Think that's feasaible?

I am also looking into a ruby ring, but I guess I will post in the Colored Stones section for in put on that.

I'd greatly appreciate any input/suggestions you may have.

Hi AL! A few questions to help us help you:
-What kind of setting are you interested in for your engagement ring? A halo will give more finger coverage, but I understand that's not everyone's style.
-Do you want a round cut or a fancy shape?
-Are you open to pre-loved?

I would recommend a plain wedding band so you could maximize your budget:

If you want to work with a vendor directly, IDJ is a wonderful PS recommended vendor who could help you find something beautiful in your budget and do everything in a one stop shop! Call and speak to Yekutiel!

Here's an idea of what you could achieve with your budget. If you are willing to look at J colour you could increase the diamond size a bit. I think this diamond (vendor says eye clean) along with the setting/band would give you a beautiful classic look. Over time you could add a pave band if you wanted to increase the bling factor. Good luck on your search and congrats on getting engaged!!

DOn't be afraid of SI1 or even SI2, you can maximize your budget by going this route. Some vendors will tell you how eye clean the diamond is you're looking at. DO you want a round diamond? what type of setting are you looking at? James Allen has a halo priced at $700 which would give you additional finger coverage.

https://www.jamesallen.com/engageme...ellis-halo-diamond-engagement-ring-item-53050

I like this pave setting too:

Check out this diamond. I NEVER rec diamonds but saw it when i was browsing and it looks good. Falls within recommended parameters for rounds, is a G and LOOKS eye clean (unless i'm totally missing something) though it's an SI2. Maybe someone more experienced can comment on it and you may want to ask JA about about the clarity and if there are any issues with light return due to inclusions. Don't go running off and buying it just because i posted it!
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-di...g-color-si2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-2134064

FOr wedding bands, check out http://www.e-weddingbands.com they have great prices and have a 10% sale right now. Personally, i'd do a plain wedding band for now, that'll run you $100.

blue nile is also a good way to save but their settings aren't really stellar. i believe their Signature Ideal stones are screened and are eye clean but you'd need someone here to help you out with a selection.

have you considered pre-owned?

The grade setting inclusion on that stone is a cloud and will more than likely be fuzzy/less crisp.

OP, I'd love to know your setting preferences before throwing anything out there! I really think IDJ would be a great option for you because they could get anything and source a beautiful stone for you and evaluate them.

This is also a great thread where PSers helped a poster find a beautiful .60 I SI1 round brilliant halo ring for under $2k - she was also an 8 1/2 ring size. For me, I'd put what I could towards the engagement ring and go for a simple wedding band. You could always change to a diamond band or add one to stack later, maybe for an anniversary? Thirding the suggestion to try http://www.e-weddingbands.com for your band. I purchased a simple 2MM white gold wedding band through them. Actually, I ordered one style and ended up exchanging for another. Customer service was fantastic.

For me, I might go with a single standalone ring at that price point.

This is possibly an unpopular opinion here - but if you are in the US Costco might be a good place to look. Especially since you can return the ring(s) if you don't like them.

A large quantity of their engagement rings appear to be platinum, I colored, VS2.

I would also look on sites like Etsy, and Jewels by Grace, Trumpet and Horn etc if you like vintage pieces.

I know some people have great luck on eBay, too.

Totally agree on Costco, no one can beat their return policy (given you haven't resize the ring).

It's a little over your budget but it is $600 off on this one: http://www.costco.com/Princess-Cut-%2526-Round-Brilliant-1.45-ctw-VS2-Clarity%2c-I-Color-Diamond-Platinum-Wedding-Set.product.100034990.html

Yep! It is low risk.

I was looking at these for the OP:

Could get this and thin plain band from etsy or e-wedding rings.
http://www.costco.com/Round-Brilliant-1.00-ctw-VS2-Clarity%2c-I-Color-Diamond-14kt-White-Gold-Three-Stone-Ring.product.100217699.html

This set is close to budget
http://www.costco.com/Round-Brilliant-1.00-ctw-VS2-Clarity%2c-I-Color-Diamond-Platinum-Three-Stone-Wedding-Set.product.100034975.html

You mentioned liking rubies and this could make a nice standalone ring if you are open to something less traditional
http://www.costco.com/Ruby-and-Diamond-Band-18kt-White-Gold.product.11205332.html

This could be nice all by itself. Sparkle factor.

Hello ac117

Thank you for taking the time to respond to me, I really appreciate it. To answer your questions:

-I love halo settings but they seem to be pretty costly so dunno if I would be able to afford it with my budget? I like all most settings except tension really
-I am looking for round, princess, oval or cushion cut
-Honestly I'd not a pre-loved ring

Could you please let me know what IDJ stands for? =) Thanks!

Wow you guys are really taking the time to help on this board, it's amazing! Thank you farrahlyn for your response. Regarding diamond shape, as mentioned in a previous response, I am not partial to rounds only. I like rounds, princess, ovals and cushion.

Regarding setting, I actually have been looking at that second one you posted from James Allen! With a setting like that I may not mind doing a plain band, though my preference for the wedding is not plain  I am however making note of the e-weddingbands website.

Can you clarify what "light return" is, which you referenced in your response?

Finally, re: Blue Nile settings, I am surprised by your comments. When you say they are not stellar is it in terms of craftsmanship and durability? Or in terms of look? Because I was actually thinking that Blue Nile had more diversity in terms of look than JA.

I will definitely ask the wonderful people on this board their input before going out and purchasing a diamond. That is, unless my partner decides to purchase without me and surprise me

Thank you both to you and SomethingNew for your suggestions. Are rings from Costco good quality and durable? Is it safe to assume they don't come with GIA certification? This http://www.costco.com/Ruby-and-Diamond-Band-18kt-White-Gold.product.11205332.html is really gorgeous :))
Unfortunately we really cannot afford to go above $2500 so some of the other suggestions wouldn't work. But will definitely keep Costco in mind.

I found this beautiful ring on Jewels by Grace, but I have never heard of Spinel: http://www.jewelsbygrace.com/rings/2-17ct-diamond-spinel-3-stone-ring#.WCJOY1UrKUk . Is spinel a durable stone good for everyday wear?

Great! IDJ stands for I.D. Jewelry - they are located in NY.

I don't think a halo is out of the question at all! Here is the setting I would recommend:
https://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/halo/14k-white-gold-trellis-halo-diamond-engagement-ring-item-53050

Leaves ~$1800 for a diamond (because you could get $100 with a referral code):
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.62-carat-i-color-vs1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-2056872

https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.63-carat-i-color-si1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-2180205

Also, James Allen may be running a Black Friday sale soon (they did last year, I believe it was 25%). So if you have time, you could wait and put a little bit more into your center stone!

IDJ stands for ID Jewelry. If it's after hours, check their website to see if there is someone available to chat with, because they do have an after hours chat representative working nowadays as well.

From reading on Costco's website, it appears rings of a certain carat weight come with GIA certs. Others do not. For your budget, it probably would not be GIA.

No knowledge of spinels, sorry. Hopefully someone else can chime in.

Thank you for the help so far ac117. The $2500 max budget is for both the engagement ring and the wedding band, and looking at the wedding bands I like now it seems like I need to put at least $350-$500 to get a band I can settle for (something like this: https://www.overstock.com/Jewelry-Watches/Noray-Designs-14k-White-Gold-1-5ct-TDW-Diamond-Wedding-Band-G-H-SI1-SI2/12427225/product.html?refccid=SRZUJCIZGNWYGPSBRO3LAY4NVM&searchidx=2.. Which leaves me with 2100 max for the engagement ring

I know several people have recommended ID Jewelry to you. What do you think about this wedding set from them? http://idjewelry.com/round-and-princess-cut-bezel-bridal-set-in-18k-white-gold.html

The price seems like a steal, and the diamond quality is good. It would leave you a lot more $ for your center stone, and incorporate both rounds and princess cut diamonds, which, I think, you stated previously that you like both?

This set is close to budget

You mentioned liking rubies and this could make a nice standalone ring if you are open to something less traditional
http://www.costco.com/Ruby-and-Diamond-Band-18kt-White-Gold.product.11205332.html

This could be nice all by itself. Sparkle factor.

From reading on Costco's website, it appears rings of a certain carat weight come with GIA certs. Others do not. For your budget, it probably would not be GIA.

No knowledge of spinels, sorry. Hopefully someone else can chime in.

Ok, thanks!

IDJ stands for ID Jewelry. If it's after hours, check their website to see if there is someone available to chat with, because they do have an after hours chat representative working nowadays as well.

Thanks for explaining what IDJ stands for! Given how highly recommended they seem to come, I will reach out to them as well.

Best!

Can you take a picture of your hand?

An east/west marquise might be a good choice. But... it really depends on your fingers.

Ohhh why didn't I think of that! Here's a 0.65 ct marquise on a size 9. IDJ made this for me and if you like this design, you could ask them to make it within your budget.

It holds its own next to a 4 ct emerald cut and 3 carat round!

I can't remember for the life of me how much this marquise ring was, but I think well within your budget.

Hi PintoBean,

Thank you to you and Gypsy for the east-west marquise suggestion. I took a look and I am not a big fan unfortunately :))
