Hi all,

here are some photos of my new golden yellow beryl/heliodore -
specs are 1.51ct, 7x7x6.5 supernova oval cut by Barry.
I believe its Brazil material.
Not sure what the clarity grade is - when I photo or loupe it, I can see some skinny lines which I understand may
be needles..?
But it is completely eyeclean, which is all that matters for me

The colour is soo pretty, and almost exactly what I was after when I started out seeking a "sunny gem".
It is a mixture of yellow, gold with flashes of orange - the colour seems very saturated to me.

Fun little story - this was a gem that Barry had cut many many yrs ago, and had just been sitting around being unappreciated at his local jewellery store.
Fortunately for me, Barry had just decided to bring the beryl home, as he thought it was too good to be ignored like that - and I tend
to agree

ok, on to some pics !

(for ma re, the majority of these are taken in indirect midday sunlight, except for the fiery ones, which were in direct sunlight).

Some colour with the spinel and tourmaline..
(oh and if anyone is wondering, the material is hand dyed silk ribbons that I am using to make bracelets)

Very nice photos - and the gems are not bad either

Just kidding, of course, they''re great. It''s interesting how even the slightest change in angle or distance, can make the stones look so different. Another reason why they''re interesting, I guess.

Very pretty, the colors are very soft, and I love Berry''s cutting style.

Thankyou tlt, making the grade and michelle.

Mochi, I agree - it has so much depth this stone when you look into it, with orange and gold reflecting around -
I love this cut!
Thankyou!

Lovely stones AJ and nice photos. Nip over and take a couple of mine when you''ve got a few minutes!

In the meantime, I''d love to hear the low down on your photography set up & techniques etc.

Ha ha, Hi gailey - I will be happy to nip over and take your gem pics for you - your paying travel expenses, right?

Honestly, my photo setup, lol...I wander around my yard and out the front of my place, until I find some light thats complementary -
than I find a prop or two (like a flower or my silk ribbons), and point and shoot!
I would love to have the patience to set up a lightbox and everything like some of our more skilled members..and hopefully when I have some spare time I will get around to buying a setup like that

I have to say, I think the macro function on my camera is very good and easy to use - its a Sony cybershot ..I think DSCt200..
I''m sorry I don''t have any more serious pointers to give you, lol !

Thankyou so much AG, Freke and MP
35.gif

Freke, for this one, I''m really leaning towards Sally''s new setting, called the pillbox ring - I think it would be great with an oval !
And then I would have the other two as plain bezel stackers, the spinel set E-W..(like the hand photo above)..what do you think?

Now I have to work up the nerve to send my gems to THI

Thanks Tgal! I def. think it deserves a YG setting, but sterling is my budget at this time..
what do you think of the setting above..?

I think it''s pretty! But I''d hold off and do a YG setting when I had the money saved.

Do you think silver will not complement the stone very well.?

How about this - I have been thinking about this idea for a lil while, but am unsure whether it would work -
I have a nbr of 14k YG bands that I have collected for pennies from ebay, all in very good condition, and mostly Art Carved bands, so nice quality.
5.gif

Would I be able to take the band, and have my jeweller just "add" a YG bezel on top of the band to hold the gem..?

I can''t think why it wouldn''t work, as that''s pretty much how rings are made anyway, right?

here is a pic of the band I would likely use for this, a 14k milgrained one:

what do you guys think?

Just for kicks, here is the beryl in my empty 18k rose gold setting - clearly its way too big and won''t work in this setting,
but colour-wise, I think it looks great!

(For ma re, these photos are taken indoors under halogen downlights, with lots of mid-arvo sun coming through the windows.)
Personally, I think this lighting is very complementary for this gem!

Hm, not sure. I do like the silver ring you posted, very pretty and I think yellow would look fine it it.

If you could do that setting in yellow gold, I''d say that would be the ticket.
