Nervous about my blue nile order

Hey, this is probably a total noob thing to do, but I ordered an ER on Blue Nile and have to wait a while since the setting is backordered. Anyone care to calm my nerves about the stone (or convince me to go another way)?

Thanks,
Jason

I think you ordered a stone that should be a solid performer!

Although I can see in the video the crystal inclusion on the table (noted on the GIA report), my best guess is that the crystal will be clear and likely not easily visible to the naked eye. Did you happen to ask BN about that inclusion? If not, there should be time for one of their gemologists to eyeball it for you. BN does have a great return policy so you can always check it out for yourself upon receipt (be sure to look at it in different lighting conditions and at different distances and perspectives) to see if it meets your eyeclean standards.

I ran the HCA tool and the stone scored 1 (this is a weeding out tool; stones scoring below 2 are generallly are worthy candidates). https://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca

And I also ran the AGA Cut Class Tool, and the stone scored 1B (the table and the crown height both scored 1B, all the other categories scored 1A) https://www.pricescope.com/tools/AGA_NAJA_Cut_Class_Grader

Which setting did you choose?

Thank you very much for your reply! When I spoke with blue nile they said there was a note about the diamond that it was eye clean and not cloudy. When I mentioned the crystal I think they said something like I was probably seeing the reflection of the twinning wisp. The setting is why I went with blue nile actually:

It's a surprise, but my girlfriend is super easy going and our tastes generally run the same.

Thanks again!

Very pretty setting - I think your ring will be gorgeous - great choices!

Please be sure to update us once you finally have the ring, and don't forget to confirm the diamond is eyeclean to you (and GF) while still in the return period.

Hopefully you'll get the package from BN sooner rather than later!

Thanks for your help! Definitely planning on taking advantage of the 30 days. Will probably take her ring shopping and show her the different online options so she knows she has what she wants. I'll post a pic when it arrives!

BEAUTIFUL setting choice! The stone is a solid choice, leaning more toward a 60/60 style so you'll see less fire (or colored flashes of light) in the stone and more white flashes of light. A really nice size stone for the price!

Thanks farrahlyn! I was trying to maximize spread while maintaining enough quality for a layman like myself to be happy!

Lots of bang for the buck with your choice. Also, love the setting!

Did BN give you any indication if it was eye clean, prior to your ordering it? It's probably okay, but I would double check. But sounds like you are pretty laid back and open about returning & swapping if there are issues. That is a great attitude to have!

Also, with the way GIA reports averaged values on their reports I am curious how this will look to your eyes. Using the reported values, it falls in as an excellent cut according to the AGS proportion charts; however, the box I drew is a little more realistic about the potential cut. Nice thing is it could easily slip into the ideal range!

I am curious to see pics ;)2 hear your report after you see it in-person. I'm sure it will be gorgeous!

Thanks sledge! Blue Nile said there was a note on the diamond that it was eye clean and not cloudy "from the vault?" Thanks for that table. I probably can't realistically tell the difference in performance like you guys would be able to, I do maintain an interest in geology though...

What a beautiful ring!

First of all, congrats! And WOWSA, It turned out absolutely STUNNING!!!!:love::love:

Thanks for coming back and showing us photos. We just love when people do that.

Congrats, it's beautiful!

Wow, looks absolutely amazing! Great job on everything!!

Just curious, how was your experience working with BN? I've helped others pick stones with them, but haven't personally had an opportunity to purchase with them yet.

@sledge most of my diamonds are from Blue Nile and I have had nothing but great experiences with them. I have even gone through the upgrade process and it’s been terrific.

@sledge prior to PS my diamonds were Blue Nile diamonds and their customer service was excellent. I also tried several of their wedding bands to get the feel of different styles and had no issues with returning them.

I bought my studs from them and I’m extremely happy!

Hey Sledge, sorry it took me a bit to answer, I've been trying to organize my thoughts and both answer your question and talk a bit about my general diamond buying experience. I'm the kind of person that likes to do a lot of research, and I tried to do a reasonable amount starting from pretty much zero with this purchase. The following may reveal some of my ignorance about diamonds, or the diamond trade. Blue Nile was very professional and courteous and I would guess in line with other online retailers. They can't offer up insight like you guys offered in this thread (e.g. a 60/60 diamond tends to have more brilliance than fire), and when pressed about if a diamond is a good pick, fall back on the generous return policy, which is completely fair for that model. I'm sure they have pretty low margins, so can't get into the diamond picking business. I'd say where I thought they fell short was their premium line being inferior to both James Allen and Whiteflash. The Aster Ideal from Blue Nile doesn't seem worth the premium, but the James Allen True Hearts and White Flash ACA (I would have tried for one of their slightly less offerings for the value) seem worth the investment. My blue nile choice really did come down their having a platinum (my now fiancee has a nickel allergy) setting I liked. I went into two B&M stores. One didn't give me personalized help after being in the store for twenty minutes or so, so I left, and the second showed me generally poor quality diamonds.

My key guiding principal was to not pay for something I, or someone with a slightly better eye, couldn't see. So if you need a loupe or ideal scope to see it, I don't want to pay a premium for it. I could never really decide if going for one of the various premiums over AGS ideal was worth it, because I simply didn't have a way to inspect such a thing for myself. I would have preferred AGS Ideal over GIA Ex, but blue nile only lended itself to the latter. I used the HCA tool a lot. I know it's a elimination tool, but when you're shooting for one buy and you can't compare much, it's something easy to plug numbers into and see results. If I had it to do over, I would have paid more attention the AGS cut guidance tables. Overall, this is a very interesting consumer experience, with good analogies to both stock brokers (full service vs discount), and something like wine, where you're making a taste decision based on empirical data.

Hope that answers your question about Blue Nile without boring you to death!

Thanks again for all the help!

:appl:Congrats!! You have a beautiful ring!!

Love that setting! It’s ornate and delicate at the same time (I know, that does not sound right but it just makes sense to me, lol) and makes the center stone sing. Nice!!

How lovely, thanks for posting :D Glad that she loves it. :cool2:

That's a perfect description! That's why we like it too!
