Crown angle of 35 is within range, but pav angle should be between 40.6 and 40.8. so that's the culprit here.

Also, usually there should be an inverse relationship between crown and pav. So if crown is 35, pav should be shallower (40.6), and vise versa. Not always, but usually. So yours has both angles steep, which usually doesn't work well.

The HCA does not like steep/deep combos.

Well we have decided that we will probably sell the stone (depending on what the jeweller say) and then start searching for a new one (slowly and as meticulously as we can).

Forgive me if I missed it, but when did you buy the ring? It doesn’t seem fair for you to sell the diamond yourself and take a loss on it, which is almost inevitable as you are not a jeweler. If you can get a response from them, maybe you can see if they will exchange for another diamond within your specific parameters.

I will conclude the story for you here :

We were promised that the ring was going to be delivered before christmas (-1 and I think it was ready in mid january, and then it got sent to us (with failed deliveries and what not). It arrived in feburary, with an incorrect inscription too, which they promised to correct.

After that we were told that the certificate would arrive with mail (postal services), and it never did. We wrote them many times and finally got the number (but still not a cert.) this week.

We are a bit tired of all of this honestly and my fiance will try to solve it with the jeweller if he can.
If not we'll just have to accept it and try to do better next time.

Most jewelers don't really understand ideal cuts beyond GIA XXX (outside of PS, anyway).

And HCA is a tool that

• (a) isn't widely known (or embraced whole-heartedly by everyone who is aware of it) -- I would bet my next paycheck that the Swedish jeweler from whom your fiance's band was purchased would look at you blankly if you asked them for the HCA score of any of their diamonds, and
• (b) does favor certain "personalities" of stones over others.

It is perfectly possible for a diamond to score higher than what HCA says is the best range & still be appealing. Scroll through this thread for examples of this... especially yssie 's comments & PS Trade member Karl K's remark, re a stone that yssie pointed to, that the HCA score of 4.2 was "overly harsh"

It seems (since none of your prior posts mentioned any cut concerns) that you were not questioning the cut until today after you ran the specs through the HCA calculator. This is not to say that I think you should keep the stone, but no jeweler has ESP, so can't be blamed for not knowing that the HCA score or certain specs would end up mattering to you.

Here's hoping that a fresh start is soon feasible, so the current pall is no longer looming large for you and your husband-to-be. We'll be here to help you with that next selection!

Yes I can picture it in front of me now.

It's correct that we didn't have cut concerns until we were able to run the stats, as we trusted them (stupid I know).
We just have to accept that and cannot blame anyone but ourselves.

Omg. Incompetence!! It’s one thing to miss a deadline by a few days, it’s another to deliver both late and with major issues. I am so sorry, and understand why you’d want to start fresh.

Since your priority is obviously your fiancé and not your ring, no doubt this will just be a little stumble over a pebble in the grant scheme of things.
You should totally go out to a wonderful dinner and a celebrate once this is behind you.

I have a question that I'm sure you guys can help me with. The jeweller is a gemologist (GIA) and would you say the he/she did a good job picking out that stone regardless? This is purely out of curiousity.

By swedish standards he did a great job. You would need to go to high end jewellers, at least in Gothenburg or smaller cities to get anything above H, SI and VG-G cut. Honestly, if I were you, I would keep the stone/ring and enjoy it. The financial hit of selling it could instead go to new earrings or something else IMHO. If you feel bad about it because if this journey, have some candles lit and bury it in roses, it will be a new ring when you put it on again! Ok, jokes aside, give it some time and you will surely forget about it. It sure is a gorgeous ring! Lycka till!

So I have an update: The jeweller claim that they told us that they swaped the stone, which is incorrect as we never heard/received anything about that.
Just bad behaviour regardless of what one might think of the stone.

I would suggest you ask when and how they told you - I am sure it will be 'verbally' so there is no record!

They seem to be bad at doing everything - I am a believe in 'name and shame' when service is very poor...!


You could consider recutting the stone to bring the pavilion angles into a complementary range - Brian Gavin Diamonds and Whiteflash both offer this service, I believe.

Quite a few people have had re-cuts on the forum - hopefully someone can point you towards a thread or two!

You have a higher crown and a deep pavilion, which is good for recutting - it is easier to lose material than struggle with very shallow crown or pavilion

Honestly I would hesitate to recut given the size. It seems like the jeweler acknowledges the stone was swapped, which is good. Make them show you the "proof' that you agreed to the switch. They likely can't.

If the diamond that you selected became unavailable it is not right to send another even if they think equal or better without informing you.

To some it would not matter Since it matters to you and it’s your ring and money it seems you are due a refund. Good luck and hope not a hassle for you.
