Hi guys!

I’m a newbie in need of some advice.

My beloved BF proposed to me in Central Park during our holiday there:D! I’m sooooo happy but now there is a really tough task in front of us...choosing the ring...

He proposed with a prop ring as he know that I’m not 100% sure of what I would like to get.

In our country the tradition is that the newly-engaged couple pick out the rings together (not as common anymore, though) and its almost always two simple gold bands, one for her and one for him. Then at the wedding the bride gets a weddingband, preferably with some diamonds. Nowadays however people choose whatever they like and I see a lot of diamonds on both the e-ring and wedding band.

Another notable thing is that 1 ct diamonds are considered huuuuge here;).

I’ve always loved sparkly stones and my now fiancee would like to buy me a diamond ring as an e-ring.

I’ve found one ring at the moment that I really like to look of (its an halo with a plain band made in platinum with a vintage feel).

This is the information about the center diamond I’ve got so far:

0,5 ct (not any bigger than that for me as I’m left handed and clumpsy and like I said previously, we’re not really used to big diamonds aswell).

Colour: G
Clarity: VS2
Cut: 2 x minimum excellent
Shape: Round brilliant

I’ve done some research and I believe that the cut is the most important factor, is that correct?
What does ”2 x minimum excellent” mean?

I’ve seen that GIA uses excellent and AGS ideal but not more than that.

Sorry for a long post, I hope that I made some sense...
Thank you so much for your help/guidance!

Hi Muesli,
Congratulations on your engagement!

Just a few notes...you want to stick with a center stone that has a GIA or AGS report (you already know this). The cut is the most important. The
info we need from the report are

depth
table
crown
pavilion

The above info can be used to narrow down whether the stone has a decent cut or not.

Here are the ranges we like to be in (cheat sheet)
depth 60-62.3%
table 54-58%
crown 34-35 degrees (up to 35.5 with idealscope or aset)
pavilion 40.6-41 degrees
34 crown pairs with 41 pavilion; 35 crown pairs with 40.6 pav.

You can also use the hca tool to double check stones. i think you only get 3 runs for free though...not really sure on that.

If you let us know your budget we can point you in the right direction.

Any more questions...let us know!

EDIT
What does minimum 2x Excellent mean? It means the polish and symmetry will be Excellent. Thats
not good enough though. The above info is what you really need to know.

Where do you live? Is there a specific budget? That may have an impact on what posters here suggest for other buying options if the ring you mentioned doesn’t work out.

I will do my best to find said information:).

I live in Sweden if that helps. We don’t really have a budget, all I know is that I do not want a stone that is bigger than 0,5 ct.
Thank you for your reply:).
