Hi,

I got an offer from a workshop to buy this diamond at 6.5k. Here are the specs and video/images.

My question is, is it worth 6.5k or am I getting a good deal? It looks pretty good to me but my knowledge on these things are kind of limited..so I just wanted to get some help/opinion on this. Thanks! any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's the video of the diamond but I think the quality is bad now..it will take some time for google to load as I just uploaded it.

You can use the diamond search bar at the top of the forum to compare similar stones.

There are currently 49 stones that are GIA XXX, D-E, VVS2-VS2, which have PS-recommended parameters and an HCA score (using the HCA tool under the tools tab) of under 2.0 and therefore 'Excellent':

There are 4 stones that are AGS 000, which because they have achieved AGS000, you can be sure they have excellent light return and performance:

You do not specify which currency you are using - USD? CAD? SGD? AUD? EUR? GBP? - but it would appear that the price is above even the 'SuperIdeal' 'A Cut Above' stones from Whiteflash in the AGS search results, therefore I would say that the price is higher than you need to pay and you should seriously consider the WF ACA stones.

Hi my currency is SGD. thank you so much for your help! I will definitely look into it

I think 6500 sgd is around 4700 USD. When I first saw your post I was appalled at the price bc I thought it was 6500 usd haha. I think you can get a super ideal stone with a trusted vendor for the same price but id have to check. Also not sure if there are any shipping restrictions or extra taxes to take into consideration.

Hi guys, how do I tell if the diamond I am purchasing from the workshop is super ideal? She was saying it’s 3 EX and HCA certified..? She said not all are HCA certified only the good ones..

Also, I saw that for mine, the facet is medium to slightly thick. Will that be a problem?

There's no such thing as HCA certified. Does she mean that it scores under 2 on the HCA?

In general, the term "super ideal" is reserved for branded cuts. Those include Whiteflash ACA, Crafted By Infinity (sold by high performance diamonds), and Brian Gavin Signature/black lines. The one you found has good proportions, but without advanced images (ASET/IS), you can't know for sure. The super ideals I linked have those advanced images, so it's a guaranteed performer.

Hmm.. she also said her piece is 4 EX. Better than triple excellent. Any idea what she means by that?

Nope. That also isn't something I've ever heard. I would be pushing back on her random sales tactics. Ask her what those things mean. I would personally prefer a stone from a highly trusted vendor with a $1 upgrade policy (Whiteflash), than buying from someone who is just feeding you a bunch of sales tactics nonsense.

Hi guys,
I think its fully uploaded, please view in 4k

Although her random sales tactics are quite shady I think her diamonds prices are pretty reasonable. She said 6.3k-6.5k in a text message. So I guess I can get her to go down to around 6.3k I guess. But how do I know I will get something that is worth the money? Thanks for any help provided guys!

Not sure if its just me or the workshop one looks a bit messy with a lot more white flashes while the jann paul's one has more fire and a lot more burst of rainbows.

Here’s a recent stone from House of Hung, JPs sister store, which I believe many would be happy about and consider it a superideal. Yet this stone didn’t make the cut to be in JPs range.

A 0.72c F VVS2, for US$4k (sgd $5.6k) excluding taxes. For the benefits of a store, in house viewing, personalised ring design and CAD.... I think it’s pretty decent

You need aset image or idealscope image and H&A image. These would be to check on leakage(aset/idealscope) and how tightly its cut (H&A).

Instead of HCA do you think she might have said H&A? If so, tell her you want to see all the images. It looks like it could be a nice stone. Numbers
look good.

How did that not make the JP 'superideal' standard??

re: the seller being shady, I would not want to spend my money with anyone who uses underhand and/or high-pressure sales tactics. While you may be okay with it (because you have done your homework on here and know whether or not you are getting ripped off) what about those poor souls who are lead astray and overpay for crap?

I would prefer to spend my money with vendors I trust and who take pride in their customer service, not an unscrupulous seller out to make as much money as possible from unsuspecting members of the public.

I went back again to the workshop and got a “best” offer of 6750 sgd including the ring which should be a simple design with 18k white gold. Honestly I feel the difference between this and Jann Paul is pretty insignificant as I went back to see the LED lights in Jann Paul is pretty strong and in the workshop there’s only fluorescent lighting. I’m seriously considering her deal now

Also, she said that the HCA score for this is 1.1 which is supposed to be pretty good I think

Have you asked to look at the JP stones away from the magic lights?

What is the potential seller's Returns policy?

Have you checked the HCA score for yourself?

Not everyone wants a 'superideal' (or can see the difference between a superideal and a decent GIA XXX) so you would not be alone if you decide to choose the larger stone.

As long as you buy in full awareness of all the options available, and have a good Returns policy, that is a good position to be in.

Yes, I looked at jannpaul’s diamonds away from the LED lights and they looked REALLY similar to the ones at the work shop. Yes, I checked myself and the HCA score is actually 0.9 which is better than what she said it was (1.1). Not sure if there is a return policy, I’ll need to check with her on that..

Returns policy is vitally important, IMHO.

What if you get it home and you don't like it in all the lights you are usually in?

What if you want to go bigger / higher colour?

Also, what if you want to upgrade in the future?

Hca under 2 means it has potential. No such thing as "better" or "worse". It's just that if scores are over 2, reject the stone.

I thought the diamond from the workshop looked rather nice. But, for me personally, if the difference is small, I would choose to purchase one from Jann Paul. A Jann Paul diamond's performance is virtually guaranteed and his return and upgrade policies could be very important to you. You never know how you will feel in the future. If you buy a diamond with a poor, or no upgrade policy, figure that you have essentially no equity in it.

Here’s another stone from House of Hung (HOH) which was recently posted in the local forum. A 0.78 F VS1 for sgd$6750 (after local taxes). It’s not that dissimilar to the stone you quoted with very comparative pricing.

Breaking it down, to date you have not provided any scope images of the other vendors stone so we can’t really gauge the quality.
The only yardstick we have is that it looks similar by your eyes in 2 different locations and likely lighting conditions.

I’m not familiar with HOH’s return or upgrade policy but since JannPaul operate out of the same store, the benefit u have is being able to compare these 2 stones side by side (a HOH ideal vs JP superideal)
As others have pointed out some may not want a superideal but I think the least to ask for is a performer
