Need help buying a diamond!

I have recently started the search for a diamond for an engagement ring. After speaking with multiple local jewelers, I have decided to buy the diamond online. My budget is 2500 for the diamond and I just wanted to see if anyone could give me some advise and maybe point me in the right direction. I would like to get at least an SI2 with a color grade above I. If anyone can help I would be greatly appreciative.

What shape are you looking for? Round? Princess? Cushion? Other?

I think you'd be fine going to an I color in a diamond in the .8ct range. It will face up white. Might show a slight tint from the side but would still be acceptable to most people, when size matters. Just make sure that it's eye-clean enough from the sides and at a tilt, etc, because diamond clarity is graded face-up only.

If you are not up against a looming deadline, then you can have the vendors locate something for you.

Contact B2C Jewels and see what they can come up with. They were doing a stellar job last year of finding great diamonds to fit people's budgets. (Not saying that the other vendors don't.)

Read the 15 Seconds to Success at NiceIce.com, and 5 Minutes to Success, under Education, Fast Track. LOL That's the real short course cheat sheet. Very restrictive, and there are nice diamonds that don't fit those criteria. But sometimes people just want to buy a great hearts & arrows round brilliant and not do a lot of searching and studying detailed information that they may never use again, too.

Thanks for all of the replys! What are some of the sites I should deal with when it comes to buying a diamond online? I like james allen because I can actually look at the diamonds but I've found better deals on other sites. Would I be better off going with james allen or something like blue nile or solomon?

I know you said above I color but the strong blue with the J will be lovely and bright.

Both are beautiful. Both would make lovely rings.

james allen or good old gold are great choices for you. You want someone who will provide you with pictures and an idealscope image.

BGD and whiteflash are also great, but may not have something for you.

Hey, if you see something that' a deal, reserve it right away before you post it to PS. Keeps someone else for grabbing it out from under you.

J color is going to be too far down there, if you want/need the diamond to still look white from the side. These are all 1ct stones. That H will face up very white; it only looks scary upside down, haha. I own F, H, I, J, M, and one large estate diamond that's probably a low J or a K. I used to own a G. I can see the color differences in them, and I still think you'd do fine with I but not a J. Also, with J, there's a wider range from high J( almost I) to low J (almost K), too. I is a relatively narrow range so there should not be much guesswork as to how tinted one looks vs. another.

If you are short on time, stick with the vendors who have diamonds in-house: Good Old Gold, Wink Jones @ High Performance Diamonds, Whiteflash, Brian Gavin. Maybe Engagement Rings Direct. ID Jewelry, I believe, will call stones in to look at.

James Allen has only a portion of those diamonds in house. Others have to be called in from the cutter's place. Blue Nile is only a drop-shipper, so I don't recommend them, either.

Keep in mind where the vendor is located , too, and whether or not you'll owe tax.
