Hi Everyone. I’ve been looking for a round brilliant stone in the 4 or 5 carat range that has ideal specs. They are so hard to find!!! I finally saw something today that might have potential. Can you give me your thoughts on the ideal scope?

It passes, what are the numbers from the report?
The image looks worse than it should from an over bright back light and a lot of tilt.

Does it just take time and experience to be able to tell if the issues are situational and not due to cut?

Your trick about looking at the very center and then comparing that to any "leakage" (or what looks like leakage) has been a game changer for me. Thank you!!!!

yes and no.
There are some where it is hard to tell. This one it stands out strongly.
The lightest area in the very center is not significant leakage so any area that is that shade is not significant leakage.
When the center is very light like this one that is a sure sign of an over bright back light.
IS is easier than ASET to judge because when the center is green it makes it hard to compare to light red areas in ASET.

When the arrow shafts under the table are different lengths the longer ones point to the direction of tilt and the greater the difference the more tilt.

This one its easy to pick it up because there is a lot of tilt and the back light is very bright.

A perfect virtual diamond with no front lighting, just back lighting.
The light areas under the table areas are about 1-2% leakage.
The white dots outside the table are about 80%
All perfectly normal

Asking for the numbers is a sanity check, it is possible to have an over bright back light and some under table leakage in less bright back light but they usually stand out. It is more of an issue when trying to compare a green center in ASET with red areas or when the under table light areas are closer in tone to the dots than the center.
This one its really clear that its the back light + tilt.

Thanks Karl K! So it sounds like this stone is a good one to purchase?

As a trade member there are some limits to what I can say.
The data you have supplied all looks good.
Some other technical considerations are clarity and girdle size and grading report.
Does it have a gia or ags report?
Girdle not under thin or over slightly thick.
Clarity - eye clean?
Color is personal preference.
Then comes price compared to other similar stones.

Thanks! It does have a GIA report, but I'm hesitant to post in case there are lurkers. I checked the Girdle and it is not under thin or over slightly thick. Clarity is eye clean. Price is within my budget and looks pretty in line with other stones of similar specs. I'm very close to pulling the trigger!

My only hesitation right now is that I originally wanted to go with a super ideal vendor, but none of them have exactly what I want in the size that I want and in my budget. I definitely do not want to custom cut, so I think this might be my best option.

I think this is @Karl_K 's best way of saying "looks good, go for it!" without breaking PS rules. I totally understand wanting to go with an ideal cut vendor, but if you don't want to do custom cut then this is likely your best bet, as they rarely have stones in this size. I would (personally) go for it, see it IRL to make sure you love it, and then return if you don't.

Make sure you reserve it while you think. I would not hesitate to purchase a stone like this. If upgrading in the future is something you would want, consider waiting and buying from a super ideal vendor (or dropping the clarity/follow/carat).

Otherwise looks great.

I think the issue with super ideal vendors and upgrading is that if I wanted to upgrade to a larger size in the future, it will probably be in the 6-8 carat range, and I would probably have to custom cut for sure. The other issue is that I love round brilliants up to 5ish carats. Above that, I feel like emeralds and other fancy shapes look better, which most super ideal vendors don't currently cut.

I am SO close to purchasing this one! Already getting excited.

1. I hope it's on hold! We have lurkers.
2. I think you've done a really careful job thinking about this and should jump on this one!

You all have been so helpful and so I wanted to update you on my decision. Even though the idealscope looks fine, the SI clarity has a bit of negative affect on the brilliance of the stone, and so I passed on it.
