Hello PriceScopers!

I am preparing to pop the question near the end of this year and need some help finding the right rock. I have a budget of $5000 for the diamond but am willing to go up a couple hundos more for the right one. So I tend to get a bit obsessive and have looked at a bunch of rocks, but am kind of torn.

I am blessed by the fact that my girlfriend has tiny hands (think fifth grader hands) and doesn't want a big rock. For that reason, I want to cut back on the size (~0.8 carat) and max out all the other C's.

For example,

On the other hand, a part of me knows that moving from a D-VVS2 to a G-VS1 or even to a H-VS2 will probably have no noticeable difference for most people. As for size, Is there even a noticeable difference between 0.84c to 0.92c to 1.06c? Here are some of the diamonds I've been looking at.

0.92c G-VS1:

1.06c H-VS2:

I know that moving up the clarity or color scale for smaller diamonds is usually not worth it, but not really sure what an above average point for color/clarity would be for a 0.8X - 1.0X carat diamond. The only thing I am sure of is that the cut must be excellent to ideal. I'd love to hear your opinion, wisdom, and/or advice.

Thank you!

Is the H VS2 really around 5k?

The cut does not appear perfect, but i expect still very decent. ( High crown with mid/high pav)

Depending on the proporton and other factors such as fluo, I may take the H VS2.

The D is decent
The G is too flat (low Crown) and over priced.

5k normally gets you 1.0c VS2/SI1. Sometimes, you need to pay 5.5k, because 1.0c I VS2/SI1 and 5.0k budget is popular.
If you want H or G color, you often need to drop the carat weight to 0.9c.
0.9c H VS2/SI is 3.5~4.5k ish and 0.9c G VS2 is 4.0-5k ish.

If you want more carat weight, then 1.2c J, but I think you want a higher color grade.

A well cut H VS2 is minimum 5.5k, often 6.0k+.

This is why that 1.06c H VS2 might be an amazing find around 5.0k, depending on the cut and other factors.

Thanks for the input flyingpig. Looks like someone jumped on the 1.06c H VS2 :((

Yeah, carat weight is probably the lowest priority, so I wouldn't mind 0.8-0.9c diamond. I just want the peace of mind knowing that I'm getting a great rock and that my research wasn't in vain. Back to the search.

Thanks again!

None of the above...the angles of the BN stones potentially could work, but we would need light return images to confirm this and BN doesn't provide those. You're lucky if you can get a photo.

I actually don't love that WF expert selection stone. Too much green for my liking in the ASET. But I do think you should go for a super ideal cut stone that will definitely blow her away since you don't feel like you need to get the largest diamond. If you want to hit .9, then I recommend one of these two:

I'f you're ok with the .85-.9 range, these are beautiful and under budget (I like them in this order, too):

http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3709386.htm G color, but I like the fatter arrows and higher crown angle of the H above
