Need advice on Emerald Cut - Thick/Very Thick girdle

Hi all,

I've found a stone which meets all my requirements - the only potential issue is that the girdle is shown as thick - very thick. Does anyone have any advice on what this means in terms of the look of the stone, and whether it actually matters? I understand that medium - thick is better, but is girdle as important as other characteristics such as clarity, color, cut, etc?

Other details of the stone are:

Emerald Cut
1.51 Carat
E Color
VVS2
Table 59%
Depth 60.9%

Price is around $12.5k

Any advice is very much appreciated.

Should be okay. Just ask why the culet is like that. Is it mostly thick with a few thin spots, or is it thin in one region and thick in another, or mostly thin with a few thick spots.

For me, it would matter just because I'd want to know. But it's not a deal breaker. NO it's not more important than other characteristics. With the exception of Very Thin, it's one area you can usually compromise on pretty easily with fancies.

Make sure you insure the ring.

You know you can't buy EC's with the stats right? Like, at all. I'm assuming you've seen, or will see the diamond before it is non-refundable.

Thanks - that helps. And yes, will definitely be taking a look before the purchase is final. However, I have to ship internationally so trying to reduce the likelihood of having to do a return.

will you have pictures before you ship?

Actually, I've spoken with the vendor who says they're unable to supply pictures before shipping, which is a little offputting. On with the search then, I guess.

Thanks everyone.

Have a different vendor call the stone in. Do you have the GIA lab report number?

I would ask Engagement Rings Direct and ask them for a nice diamond for you. Mark is very good with Emerald Cuts. And he can provide you with pictures and an ASET which is a tool that takes a picture that tells you what the light performance of the stone is.

Also you don't need a VVS stone. VS1 is fine. So usually is VS2.

Gypsy - it's really kind of you to provide those other options for me, so thanks very much. I've sent a note to Engagement Rings Direct based on your suggestion and will wait to see if they have any recommendations.

I've found some other stones from Eternity Diamonds which seem to meet my needs as well, and I have a friend in NYC for the next week or so who will hopefully be able to take a look at the stones on my behalf. It was great to see that Engagement Rings Direct seem to let you see the stones in person as well by making an appointment.

Fingers crossed!
