Hey everyone, I'm a bit of a newbie and naive when it comes to this stuff so be gentle on me lol...I'm looking for some expert advice from all you wonderful Pricescopers! Long story short, I have an engagement ring I'm trying to sell that is GIA certified. .57 Carat, G color, Excellent cut, SI2, Round Brilliant diamond solitaire. Relationship didn't work out, hence the selling of the ring. Only decent offer I received was from the jeweler I bought it from which was ID Jewelry, fantastic people and very nice too but I'm trying to do a little better and understand its a used ring and they have a business to run so I'm turning to the online market. I have it up for sale on places like Craigslist and "idonowidont.com"

My question for all your experts out there is, is it safe to give someone your GIA number so they can download the GIA pdf of my diamond off the GIA website? There is obviously no personal info on the report but I'm just wondering before I distribute this info publicly whether this is a smart move or not? Had a craigslister contact me immediately after I posted asking for the report. With so many scammers out there, you can never be too safe so I thought I'd turn to the smartest group I know to ask this question.
Thank you so, so much for your help!!
Jeff

It's OK. Buyers need to verify the GIA numbers too. The report number is available in public domain in GIA's site. There's nothing identifying there.

That's what I thought but wanted to verify from this group with their wealth of information.
Thank so much for your reply!

Re: Naive question from a newbie regarding GIA reports! HEL

Venues like Craiglist (at least where we used to live!) do attract a variety of people with a variety of intentions... as a buyer I would want the report number, but I can understand a seller's hesitation in giving out "unique and identifying" information about the stone. The stone is <1ct so the report won't have a plot diagram but the stone will be inscribed with the GIA report number, and these are two reasons unscrupulous people will have difficulty selling with a "fake" report or saying a report is for a different stone - either the stone's inclusions match the plot diagram or they don't, either the GIA inscription matches the report or it doesn't! And I really, really can't envision anyone bothering to inscribe a small-value stone w/ the wrong report number to flip it.

So yes, in your position I'd give prospective buyers who contact you the report number and any additional pics, etc., but I wouldn't post it in the listing itself, and I'd google it a couple of times a day just to be sure it doesn't pop up anywhere unexpected...

If you haven't already, you should also consider listed it on loupetroop.com or diamondbistro.com. Both of those sites get a lot of traffic.

Sorry Yssie, for the record I must make two corrections …

GIA does offers 3 types of reports for D-Z diamonds:
Diamond Grading Report, 0.15-carat and up, has clarity plots for all carat weights, and you must request and pay extra for laser inscriptions.
Diamond Dossier, 0.15 to 1.99-carat, never has clarity plots but laser inscriptions are always included.
Diamond eReport, has no clarity plots

Perhaps you came to believe diamonds under 1-carat don't have plots but they all got laser inscriptions because the smaller the diamond the more likely the seller makes the business decision to select the cheaper Diamond Dossier.

You, Kenny, are correct! My apologies for not looking up my references... this is exactly the sort of thing I hate seeing others do, so I'm glad you caught it and corrected it.

Yssie thanks. :wavey:

Re: Naive question from a newbie regarding GIA reports! HEL

Jeff, I'm a privacy and security freak, but I'd have no problem revealing the GIA report number of a diamond I'm selling.
In fact I'd probably put it in my listing to attract buyers and help them trust that I am a legit seller because sellers can be scammers too.

As a buyer I'd insist on it.
If the seller wouldn't tell me I'd end the conversation and move on.

Great...thank you everyone so much for replying. I really appreciate your info and taking the time to make some suggestions regarding other possible online marketplaces to sell and methods. You guys are wonderful people!!!
Thank you all very, very much!

Once you have listed it on LoupeTroop, there's a Preloved PS Jewels section in the forum, under the Pricescope Cafe menu at the top.

Question for Hudson Hawk or anyone else that may be able to answer this question. I was looking at some of these websites like diamondbistro and loupetroup. It looks like the transactions are carried out strictly between buyer and seller and no middle man involved. How does one go about safely selling something on there without getting ripped off? Craigslist I can handle because I can meet someone locally at a jewelry store but when I'm selling something over the internet I am just worried about getting ripped off. Anyone have any personal experience? I don't even trust Paypal because credit card charges can so easily be disputed now a days. Sorry, maybe I'm being overly cautious but does anyone have any personal positive experience regarding some of these sites?

Re: Naive question from a newbie regarding GIA reports! HEL

Safety is a very good question.

Perhaps call some of the legit appraisers here.
https://www.pricescope.com/appraisers

Ask them if they would broker/escrow the transaction for a reasonable fee.

Re: Naive question from a newbie regarding GIA reports! HEL

Thank you Kenny for your response. Again, the generosity of everyone's time replying and offering your knowledge is so greatly appreciated!

Re: Naive question from a newbie regarding GIA reports! HEL

That's the risk you take. Personally, I think there is more risk to the buyer than the seller. The seller can pay you through paypal and you pull out your money. Paypal can't really do anything to take back money that isn't sitting in your account. The buyer is the on that risks buying something and not getting it.

Re: Naive question from a newbie regarding GIA reports! HEL

One other option, if you are not in a hurry for the money, is consigning it with your original vendor.

I did that and, even after the commission fee, I got top dollar.
Unfortunately it took over a year to sell.

Re: Naive question from a newbie regarding GIA reports! HEL

Kenny, once again, your information is greatly appreciated and doesn't go unnoticed. I'm not in a huge hurry but would like to sell within the next couple weeks even if I have to lose a few bucks. I've received a couple decent offers so I think I can sell it fairly soon. Honestly, I just want to move on from this phase of my life (long story I won't put you through lol) and rather lose some money than deal with this for very long. I'm not even keeping the money, I'm using the money to make the final payment on my Ex's car so I'd rather just move forward with my life but thank you never the less for all your suggestions and opinions and I hope everyone out there has a great and safe Thanksgiving!
You all are great!
Thanks!
