to follow up on my previous thread:

so, i finally had my meeting with LM today !
it was definitely an extremely productive meeting ! he's absolutely no BS, he's opinionated, honest and straightforward, which i very much respect.
our meeting lasted 2 whole hours - time just flew by with our deep discussion ! i've definitely learned so much from this master !
first, i learned about pave styles : mushroom pave is only good for something that's super super delicate, hence not appropriate for the adrianna. fishtail is only good for something that's super delicate as well, such as a thin version of the adrianna, with a 0.95mm halo and 1.4mm shank. v-cut will minimize the look of the diamond but has a less fluid look (has that antiquey look), and cutdown has the most fluid, smooth look while maintaining the delicate look, but this would result in a teeny tiny bit more metal surrounding the pave.
then we went onto an in depth discussion in how it's just very hard for me or him to determine the exact mm height for the setting, it is best to determine the "look" i desire. good thing i provided him ring profile photos that i like from PS, and he got the general idea. he did still insist that the visual angle leading down to the gallery has to make sense, hence it's just not a good idea to set it super high. this made sense to me, but i did still ask him to set it higher than he normally would, i told him that i really want to see the culet a little more above the gallery, not visually "touching" it. he compromised with a smile and wrote that on the work order as : "height prefer higher, but angle of the head is the overriding factor".
we went on to discuss the following:
- explained to me why he set his stones the way he does (his "as low as possible" philosophy, we spent a lot of time debating)
- showed me 2 whole boxed of stock pave ring, showed me v-cut and cutdown style, i've never seen such gorgeous work in my life!
- showed me his 4+ct cushion adrianna : it had a 1.9mm shank, 6.7mm setting height, small gallery, curved stems, v-cut pave
- showed me his eternity rings so that i could decide on the ring shank width, which i decided on 1.8mm, and the pave type (i decided on went back and forth between v-cut and cutdown and finally settled on cutdown at the last minute of our meeting)
- convinced me to have faith in him on the halo part, let him decide on the width of the halo so that the head will flow perfectly with the 1.8mm shank...
- decided on the shank shape (round, uniform not tapered, just like most of his adrianna rings), 1 row of cutdown style pave for a smoother, fluid look
- decided on prongs (4 single claw prongs)
- decided on no airline between center diamond and halo (sits flush)
- asked for a slightly larger gallery (so that it's not so "inverted pyramid like" at the bottom), plain with no pave
- asked for a "higher setting", but the "ideal visual angle" is still the overriding factor to the height (this is the part i need to have faith in him)
- no "A Jour" (so underside of the halo will be covered with metal, will not see open pavilion of the melee under the halo), this again was a huge discussion with him... he told me that with "a jour" the ring would look more regal and more expensive, however my heart and my gut are telling me that i would be happier with a smoother fluid look, so i went with no "a jour".
- shank will be 75% covered with pave, set at 5 and 7 o'clock of the shank (he told me that anything larger than a size 6 will have 4 and 8 o'clock shank set)
- ring size is 4 5/8
my overall feeling of the meeting is sort of like a teacher / student private lesson, i definitely had to be aware of how and what i spoke about, but at the same time i had learned tremendously from him ! He was overall very nice and he really honored every one of my questions with full and extensive answers.
the best thing is that he really wanted the ring to be made with quality and not be rushed with time. his expected completion date for me is the 2nd or 3rd week of January ... this is going to be a 7 week wait !!!!!
by the end of the meeting i left him with the stone and paid the 50% labor and metal deposit. the melee price will be paid after the ring is completed since he will not know how much melee he's used until the ring is done.
