so, i finally had my meeting with LM today !

it was definitely an extremely productive meeting ! he's absolutely no BS, he's opinionated, honest and straightforward, which i very much respect.

our meeting lasted 2 whole hours - time just flew by with our deep discussion ! i've definitely learned so much from this master !

first, i learned about pave styles : mushroom pave is only good for something that's super super delicate, hence not appropriate for the adrianna. fishtail is only good for something that's super delicate as well, such as a thin version of the adrianna, with a 0.95mm halo and 1.4mm shank. v-cut will minimize the look of the diamond but has a less fluid look (has that antiquey look), and cutdown has the most fluid, smooth look while maintaining the delicate look, but this would result in a teeny tiny bit more metal surrounding the pave.

then we went onto an in depth discussion in how it's just very hard for me or him to determine the exact mm height for the setting, it is best to determine the "look" i desire. good thing i provided him ring profile photos that i like from PS, and he got the general idea. he did still insist that the visual angle leading down to the gallery has to make sense, hence it's just not a good idea to set it super high. this made sense to me, but i did still ask him to set it higher than he normally would, i told him that i really want to see the culet a little more above the gallery, not visually "touching" it. he compromised with a smile and wrote that on the work order as : "height prefer higher, but angle of the head is the overriding factor".

we went on to discuss the following:

- explained to me why he set his stones the way he does (his "as low as possible" philosophy, we spent a lot of time debating)
- showed me 2 whole boxed of stock pave ring, showed me v-cut and cutdown style, i've never seen such gorgeous work in my life!
- showed me his 4+ct cushion adrianna : it had a 1.9mm shank, 6.7mm setting height, small gallery, curved stems, v-cut pave
- showed me his eternity rings so that i could decide on the ring shank width, which i decided on 1.8mm, and the pave type (i decided on went back and forth between v-cut and cutdown and finally settled on cutdown at the last minute of our meeting)
- convinced me to have faith in him on the halo part, let him decide on the width of the halo so that the head will flow perfectly with the 1.8mm shank...
- decided on the shank shape (round, uniform not tapered, just like most of his adrianna rings), 1 row of cutdown style pave for a smoother, fluid look
- decided on prongs (4 single claw prongs)
- decided on no airline between center diamond and halo (sits flush)
- asked for a slightly larger gallery (so that it's not so "inverted pyramid like" at the bottom), plain with no pave
- asked for a "higher setting", but the "ideal visual angle" is still the overriding factor to the height (this is the part i need to have faith in him)
- no "A Jour" (so underside of the halo will be covered with metal, will not see open pavilion of the melee under the halo), this again was a huge discussion with him... he told me that with "a jour" the ring would look more regal and more expensive, however my heart and my gut are telling me that i would be happier with a smoother fluid look, so i went with no "a jour".
- shank will be 75% covered with pave, set at 5 and 7 o'clock of the shank (he told me that anything larger than a size 6 will have 4 and 8 o'clock shank set)
- ring size is 4 5/8

my overall feeling of the meeting is sort of like a teacher / student private lesson, i definitely had to be aware of how and what i spoke about, but at the same time i had learned tremendously from him ! He was overall very nice and he really honored every one of my questions with full and extensive answers.

the best thing is that he really wanted the ring to be made with quality and not be rushed with time. his expected completion date for me is the 2nd or 3rd week of January ... this is going to be a 7 week wait !!!!!

by the end of the meeting i left him with the stone and paid the 50% labor and metal deposit. the melee price will be paid after the ring is completed since he will not know how much melee he's used until the ring is done.

So happy it went well and the master was patient and responded well to your questions. Bet he appreciates customers like you who want to truly learn and understand, and can keep up with the information he provides to you!
It sounds like this ring will be a show stopper. Hope the time flies by - but do not want to rush him, right?!

Thanks so much for sharing your experience in such detail! What a great resource for other PSers who are curious about working with him.

I'm curious about a couple things you mentioned. Would you be able to articulate what his reasons were for "low as possible" default setting? When I spoke with him he just said essentially that "it's the best choice" (I'm paraphrasing, but that's about it). What kinds of points did he make about the low as possible setting?

Also, interesting that he mentioned a joure - did he say what types of rings usually use a jour settings? I *think* my ring will have it (it will be channel set), but it wasn't specified in the work order and now I'm wondering if I should go back to revise the work order and specify it. What else did he say about a joure settings aside from a regal look?

And I can COMPLETELY sympathize with the long wait - I will be right there beside you sistah! My diamond has been chez Leon since October 12, and I'm assuming at this point that I'm not going to get my ring until January also (he/we are waiting on sidestones, so that was a variable that I knew from the beginning would likely cause some delay).

So exciting though!!! :appl:

yay, glad it went soo well! I think it's great when a jeweler wants to sit down with you, educate you, etc. Shows pride in work and how important it is to do it right and make the customer happy.

Wow frankiextah, very thorough and informative! I'm so glad you had such a great meeting with him! Sounds like you had a very in depth discussion, much more than mine with him. We never even got into a jour, I've never heard of it. But he did explain the different types of pave and I tried on that 4 carat cushion halo ring too! Isn't it stunning?

So sorry about your long wait! Now I'm wondering about my wait. We're essentially getting the same ring, and I know that as of this morning, my stone was still floating around loose, so I don't have high hopes that it will be done in 3 weeks.

I was just about to post a topic asking about the different types of pave, so it was interesting to read your description of them all. I don't suppose you could link to a (eg Leon) pic of each, specifying which is which? I still struggle with knowing the difference visually, and I hate having to ask EVERY TIME.

Understand it might be a pain, so no worries if not. :)

spirit, yes, i'm so psyched about this ... such a long wait but i'm just going to focus on the holidays and new years' festivities, hopefully time WILL fly by !

Fascinating! Intricate, a lot of details. I don't think I understood much of it. LOL!

lovestreet, he explained to me that the line of vision on the side flows down the pavilion of the diamond, if he sets it much higher then the flow of vision would not be as perfect because the stems will have to be straighter in a way, and the gallery will have to be even tinier. sorry it doesn't sound too helpful, but it's hard to describe i guess ?

here's a photo of what "a jour" means (the underside of the ring showing the open pavilion of the halo melee diamonds) :

http://www.artofplatinum.com/portfolio/details.php?image_id=183

this ring is made of v-cut pave, together with the "a jour" feature, this ring looks quite antique-y.

here's a photo of what i had asked for (the underside of the ring is metal covered):

http://www.artofplatinum.com/portfolio/details.php?image_id=628

with a smooth bottom side of the halo and cutdown pave, this ring looks a little more fluid, and smooth, which i prefer.

frankiextah, thanks so much for the scoop (and the pics)! You have definitely done your homework!

I think understand what you're saying about what Leon said re lines of the pavillion - perhaps that the angles of the prongs/struts should reflect the angle of the pavillion, and the higher the diamond is set, the larger the difference between the angle of the prongs (which have to be straighter) and the angle of the pavillion. Very intresting - I wouldn't have thought to look at it that way.

Your ring will be gorgeous!! I'm so excited for you (and me too) and glad your meeting with Leon was productive, informative and nice - an overall success!

so glad it turned out well for you. (I knew it would)
can't wait to see this ring!

lovestreet, yes that's what he's trying to tell me ... i brought in JBEG and MAYTAL's ring profile photos to the meeting and stressed that i really want to see the culet ABOVE the gallery with at least a little bit of space in between, he reluctantly compromised and filled out the work order in a way that made sense to both of us ... setting the diamond as high as possible without compromising the visual beauty ... i've decided not to tell him the exact mm height and let him be the judge - he now KNOWS that i do want it set higher so we'll see how much he's going to follow through hehe ... crossing fingers and putting faith on this one, in addition to the halo width, trusting that the center diamond's beauty will not be overwhelmed by the halo !

during the meeting he kept telling me that the more "restrictions" i give him the less he can do to make the ring beautiful..

i know, lovestreet and hellokitty we will all be waiting !!!!!

and thanks for everyone else's encouragement throughout this process ! :wavey:

frankie, thanks for sharing your experience! sounds awesome :) I can't wait to see the finished ring!

Sounds like the most incredible experience. Wow!

Wondering if you could clarify the types of pave? I am going to meet with my jeweller tomorrow and want to be armed with knowledge surrounding what type of pave I want.

Thanks!

Thanks frankiextah sorry i didn't see the above posts re: clarity.

I know. Should I go with a different type of pave?

well, I like that gear-like (and possibly pretentious) appearance very much, so I wouldn't be swayed. But what do YOU like? Best way to find out is to see various examples in person - in your hand you see with a depth that a photograph really can't convey.

Frankiextah, I am so glad that your meeting went well. I am sure your ring will be fabulous! I think most of us who had a ring
made by Leon waited about 8 weeks, so if you get yours in 7, you are doing well. The wait is long and killer! Hopefully, because
you had such a great and informative meeting with Leon you won't spend the seven weeks second guessing yourself like those of
us who ordered just by the photos did! I would LOVE to spend an hour with the man looking at rings he has made!

I personally think women should own multiple e-rings made my Leon. I just don't think one is enough! :naughty: :o
I had the hardest time choosing. I love my ring, but I also love many of his rings. It would be great if settings were interchangeable
and you could pop out your stone and pop it into another setting on any given day. Can someone please come up with that?????

luv2sparkle, so i guess your ring took 8 weeks ? does that include the timeframe between them notifying you to complete payment and shipping time? i remember LM told me that they would contact me about a week before the ring is really ready so that i have some time to remit the 2nd half of the deposit... did he do the same with your order since you are not in NYC? i will be picking up the ring myself at this studio since i practically live 10 blocks away from the diamond district...

he did also tell me that the ring will be ready most probably the 2nd week of January but wanted me to be prepared for the 3rd week so that i wouldn't be so disappointed if he could not finish it by the 2nd week ... he told me that most of the problems happen during the last phase of the ring making, so if something doesn't look 100% perfect he would have to go back and re-do it... wish me luck !! :cheeky:

hellokitty and lovestreet , any updates on your LM rings ?

One of the best recaps of a meeting with Leon I've read. And definitely the most informative. Thanks very much!

My ring did take a little over 8 weeks. I had paid for most of it ahead since I didn't want that to hold anything up. I sent a bank
check. I added a stone inside, and engraving and then added a spacer band about two weeks after I placed the initial order.
But even with all that, it was right about 8 weeks or so.

I live in CA so I did have to deal with the shipping and you won't have to do that. Lucky you, to live so close that you can run by
and pick it up! That will make it easier and less stressful than the whole shipping thing. I can't wait to see it! Truly, the
waiting is the hardest part. I think you will be so glad you went with Leon!

no update frankiextah- I'm not sure if I should be expectingh updates? Anyway, I told him to call my fiance when the ring is ready- I really hope he surprises me.

No update here either. Right before Tgiving was my 4 week mark, so I emailed (and then a day later called) to see how it was coming. Unfortunately, the cutter/supplier still doesn't have my sidestones. Two weeks later (Monday) I sent a gently follow up e-mail asking if any progress was made, but no response yet - though I'm e-mailing him mostly so that he is reminded to nag his supplier in case he forgets and my project stays on the back burner indefinitely.

He was reluctant to give me an exact timeframe because the supplier's provision of sidestones was somewhat out of his hands, although he did say it could take up to a month to get them, so I understood I could be outside his usual timeframe. Now that it's at 6 weeks, my main concern is that Leon not forget to follow up with the supplier/cutter on a regular basis. We'll see

By the time I get my ring, there will have been three generations of Leon rings through PS. But, in the meantime, I'm happily following everyone else's Leon threads! Keep us posted Frankiextah & Hellokitty!

goodness... I don't think I've ever seen such a scathing commentary on fishtail pave :cheeky:

On the subject of scathing commentary, this is another Leon zinger from his website:

"Princess cut diamonds - very modern way of setting channel - wide walls, too much metal. Customer wanted - who am I to question bad taste?"

http://www.artofplatinum.com/portfolio/details.php?image_id=315 :cheeky:

OMG, during the meeting LM did mention how he hated princess cuts and how "cheap" they look, and therefore they are the "cheapest" stones of all shapes... my jaw dropped on the ground when i heard that but i did keep calm and carried on ... :o

i guess during the meeting i did dodge a few snide comments but i did tell myself that he was there to please me, not vice versa, therefore even though he told me he feels nothing about RB stones, hates jewelry but makes a living out of making them, me choosing no "a jour" is basically buying a rolls royce and replacing the interior with plastic, etcetc.... i stayed strong with my opinions on my ring details, including having cutdown pave matched with a halo with no "a jour".

i guess in the event that he decides to post a pic of my ring on his website he would totally be like : "who am i to question if someone wants to replace a rolls royce interior with plastic?"
