Interesting, thanks Bee! I suppose you get a gut instinct as well if the mare/ ewe/ sow isn''t progressing as she should, if all appears to be fine but slow, best to get the baby out rather than take chances!

Yeah that''s it. I''d say the reason that a lot of farmers get them out early is so they don''t have to be up all night, especially if they''re by themselves.

Thats totally understandable! How is Raffles by the way?

Raffles is doing great! He is on his third New Zealand rug this winter-he has a way of being able to get out of his rugs and instead of leaving them on the ground, he tramples them and tears them into pieces. It drives me mad!! The place where he''s retired is up the mountains and I wasn''t able to get up to him last week with the snow so luckily the people that live there had all the food for the horses. How are all of your babies?

Bless him! Wow, thats a lot of expense for rugs!!

Mine are doing fine thanks, hating the mud and cold, I just brought them in, they looked so pitiful - cold and wet here. Jasmine especially hates bad weather - typical thoroughbred!!

aww they do look so miserable out in the field. I took Raffles in for what was meant to be four months last summer but after 9 days we had to put him out again as he was constantly trying to get out over the stable door and was crying out for his friends in the field constantly. He might be an old pony, but boy does he not want to be coddled. Same with the rugs, but I refuse to not put one on him. If he gets rid of the current one though I''ll admit defeat this winter.

Its difficult isn''t it....You are doing the best thing letting him be with his friends and the natural life is best, but I don''t blame you with the rugs - stinker!!!

Jasmine DETESTS rugs, they make her so filthy tempered so I gave up and just stable her now when the weather gets bad, she is so good inside - she loves it and is so content!

hehe you would think that they''d love the heat of them! I wish Raffles would love to be in, but at 36 I kind of let him do what he wants and enjoy himself. I only bring him in to groom him and have his hooves trimmed. Other than that, I just go out to the field laden down with carrots.

Bless his heart! I was so hoping my boy would hit his thirties and beyond, but it didn''t happen. Sounds like Raffles is doing great and really enjoying life!!!

I''ve had Raffles since I was 12 so it would be very hard to be without him. Plus my granny was the one who bought him for me as a pressie before she died, so he''s always been my link with her in a way. He is definitely enjoying his life though-he''s boss of the field!

Thanks. I had him 20 years, it was and still is so terribly hard, I can''t even think of him without getting choked and I don''t want it to be this way. I shared so much with him and he was the reason my whole life went the way it did - even as a child I knew one day I would find him. I had a horse tapestry with a beautiful golden horse featured and I always knew one day that horse would find me- and he did. We had an incredible bond which I was so lucky to have had, you know how it can be with horses.

He sounds absolutely gorgeous. That''s amazing that you knew you were going to have him eventually. I think that it''s amazing the bond that you can have with a horse. Raffles is the same-he''s like a dog. He was the first horse that I went to see when my granny said that she wanted to get me a horse and I just fell in love with him and he turned into the best thing ever when I trained him properly. I really miss riding him.

They are so wonderful aren''t they? I just knew that one day the horse in the picture would be mine and I would be his....He was the most beautiful Welsh golden palomino ( they are my favourite breed). He had such a presence and the biggest heart. He was terribly spoiled but so loving, he was incredible. I was so lucky to have been his Mum.

Raffles sounds wonderful and such a character! I bet you were so excited when Granny said she was going to get you a horse!!!

Awww I love palominos. They''re so beautiful! I''ve always been partial to dark bays so I was delighted that the horse that I went to see was bay and he turned into my big baby that I have now. Raffles is so spoilt too but it''s hard to be angry with him. I''d say that he was beaten before I got him as he was so incredibly shy and still to this day he will not let a man catch him in the field, he''s always been very much a one person horse. I''ll have to try and scan some photos of him onto my computer. I don''t know if I could get another horse while I still have Raffles-it sounds so stupid but I''d feel like I was betraying him or something.

I understand what you mean totally. Poor chappie, it does sound as if someone was cruel to him before you had him. It makes my blood boil to think of the cruelty some animals have to endure - literally makes me sick to my stomach. Jasmine is a rescue horse and we are not sure what she went through either as a foal, she came in with her dam as a cruelty case apparently and it took her a long time to totally settle. She was very good but so jumpy for months on end poor girl. But she is fine now and I honestly could not ask for a better horse, she is so intelligent and we fit together really well. She is a pleasure to have, it took a little while for us to properly click, but we are there now!

It makes me so angry that someone could be cruel to them. I worked in the spca over here for 9 years at weekends and full time during the summer and it used to make me so angry some of the cases that came in. I think that it would be an area that I''d like to go into when I graduate. I worked there for so long and it''s one of the places that I''m happiest at so I''d love to be a vet for them. Money and all that wouldn''t be as good but even when I worked there full time I didn''t get paid a huge amount but the work was so satisfying. Jasmine sounds gorgeous. Do you notice a big difference between her and your last? I''ve always been a fan of geldings as they''re so much easier than mares!

Poor Manolo had to be brought into the vet today. D noticed him vomiting this morning and he got more and more listless throughout the morning so he brought him into me in work-the poor baby had a temperature of 104 and he has a suspected GI infection. We''re not 100% sure how he could have picked it up as he''s an indoor kitty but the poor little thing has had a tough day. He seems to be doing a bit better now that he''s home though.

Oh No!
23.gif
Poor little Manolo - I will be praying hard for a rapid and complete recovery so he can get back to his rascally, healthy self soon

Thanks AG! He''s doing a bit better today and he''s been fasted all day and is starving! Getting some chicken on for him now!

Yes I do, they are very different. I have always preferred geldings, they are easier! Jasmine is flighty, grumpy, skittish, highly intelligent, hates having her routine disrupted and she is incredibly sensitive, but she is a Thoroughbred! Having said that though she is so in tune with me now that I only have to gesture that I want her to do something and she does it. My beloved boy was also highly intelligent and very spoiled, I had the most incredible bond with him. He was however very stable moodwise, Jasmine changes like the weather!

We''re not 100% sure. I was originally afraid that he might have swallowed something and got a blockage as being the little brat that he is he''s in everything! I felt her and so did the vet in work and neither of us could feel anything there. He thinks that it might have been from him eating something that Amber brought in or something like that. He said it was strange though as Manolo doesn''t go out. If he doesn''t vomit after eating tonight and he goes to the loo ok then I can just finish his meds but if he does get sick I''ll have to bring him in for x-rays tomorrow.

Hopefully he will be as right as a trivet in no time at all! Its so worrying when they aren''t well, its all you can think about. Poor little guy. I wondered if he might have eaten something he shouldn''t have!!

I''m glad the little guy is doing a bit better today. Fingers crossed that things are, um, moving through as they should and no x0rays required - I''m sure he''ll be back to his normal, troublemaking self in no time!

Thanks Lorelei and AG! He just jumped into the fridge when I opened it so he''s definitely got his appetite back. He wouldn''t eat any ham for D yesterday so we knew he was sick! I''ll let you know how he''s doing later on this eve!

That sounds more like him!!! Great news!!! Please keep us posted on how the little babe is doing!!

How is he now?

Well he ate his chicken and I''ve been following him around since then and there''s been no vomiting

He''s getting much more playful too as he''s wondering why the hell I''m behind him the whole time. Lets hope that Manolo is on the mend! He hasn''t done anything major apart from his widdles in the litter yet but I''m just glad that he hasn''t vomited.
