Honestly - so much is focused on the BM and GM attire in this thread...okay, if they don''t match perfectly, no big deal. You only really see them together for 20-30 minutes (and the photos after) and so I don''t think that their dresses/tuxes a) need to be a major point of contention b) have to really have an impact on the room''s decor.

What I wouldn''t do is put the lighter and darker green together all over the room. Maybe pick one (my vote''s on the darker) for the main reception color? White tablecloth & chair covers, with dark green sashes and napkins. Plus dark green and white centerpieces?

You could do the same thing with the lighter green, but I think just given the season the darker green would be a better fit for the room decor. I really like the darker one...very lovely color.

Hope this helps,

RZ

Okay, I want to touch on the cake thing because I think you overlooked it before in the crazy green conversation.

I really think there''s a more traditional way to do that cake, since that really seems to be what will work with your venue and wedding, but it can still incorporate Scrabble (which, as I said before, is a really cool idea).

What if you had the normal fondant base, but instead of a ribbon or something along the bottom edge, you have fondant or gum paste Scrabble tiles? You could have them done in gold or green or whatever colour you wanted, and it could spell out your names, the wedding date, whatever you wanted.

When I get home I''ll google Scrabble cakes and see if there''s anything similar to what I''m trying to describe.

I kind of get what you''re saying but the reason we like the cake so much is because it''s just out there, it''s bold, it''s different and that is how we are as people. i really don''t think we''ll be changing the cake but i appreciate the suggestions....

Princesss...This is how I''d do it... (with Italia''s color scheme.)

*White/ivory fondant/buttercream on everything
*24kt gold dust painted Scrabble tiles with the forest green lettering (I left it black because I already spent too long doing this with photoshop)
*I left the gold "ribbons" around the bottom, but where the darker gold was around the very bottom of each layer, I put the forest green instead. Both bands could be changed to just one band of the dark green though--and I''d do those bands/the one band in satin.
*I left the board it''s on gold, but that could also be changed to green.

I never like dark colors as the background on a cake unless it''s chocolate or airbushed on. And it''s incredibly difficult to have airbrushing not look cheap. My problem with dark colors in frosting/fondant is that it takes A LOT of color to make it that color, and that affects the flavor of the food. Plus it bleeds into the other parts of the cake, and that makes me crazy because it looks messy and gross on top of tasting *off*. Most baking ingredients are white, and they taste best when they are white...

Hi Smurfy, I came across this picture and thought I would share with you. I think the cupcakes with the scrabble pieces are really cute, as well as the cookies wrapped as favors. Just something for you to consider if you''re looking for gifts for the guests. (sorry if the pic doesn''t upload properly I''m new to all this)

Many others have said it, but I have to agree - you asked for advice, even bumped the thread to be seen, and ask for advice and *honest* opinions, but you''re upset because you think people are tearing it apart? C''mon. You have received some great feedback and advice, but you''ve scoffed at all of it because it''s not what you want to hear. Plenty of us have not gotten feedback that we like, but we all accept it because it''s a public forum and people are going to say what you don''t always want to hear. No one is putting you down, they''re all offering wonderful help, and you''re not willing to accept it. In reality, you''re going to do what you want to do regardless of whatever anyone else says. It''s too bad that you''re going to just walk away and not realize the great community that''s here to HELP.

***off my soapbox now.........

Freke, that was so generous of you to take your time to do that!!! It looks so good...I thought you found a picture of it like that!

And Smurfy, if you find you can''t swing the edible 24k, they make just gold luster dust for the same effect minus the big bill!

those are cute! The cookies would make lovely favors or welcome gifts. You could even make them yourself!

The thing is that a family friend of ours runs her own cake business and will be making our cake almost for free. However only the top part will be real cake, the rest will just be for show (it will be covered in fondant and stuff, but no real cake on the inside) we''ll be serving sheet cake (we don''t know what this will look like). She is willing to make the fondant the same green as the dresses in a quality way, she won''t be airbrushing it. also my sister had her cake in a burnt orange color at her wedding and it looked incredible so i''ve seen how colors can work on cakes and i really believe we can pull it off.

I have to say that I do like the cookies idea though.

I almost wonder if I could get a chocolate store in town to make scrabble pieces out of white chocolate for the piece and dark chocolate for the letting, that would be cool

Its good to see you back Smurfy!

Those cupcakes with a Scrabble letter on them were adorable! Could each guest have a scrabble cupcake instead of a piece of sheetcake? Just a suggestion...

The cake is a very cool concept!

The 24kt really isn''t that expensive because it goes really really far. I bought a small $7.99 container for 1 cake, and I''ve used it for 3 cakes, decorations for petit fours and I still have about half of it left. Of course a baker should probably charge about $24 for it, but it''s still really not that bad. And being that the decorations are so easy to make (giant thing of gum paste, rolled out thin, and little rectangles cut from it, dried and then colored letters piped onto them) they really shouldn''t cost that much either. This cake is actually incredibly simple and easy to execute.

something like this would be a cool centerpiece too

scrabble and ornaments and greenery from bhg.jpg

i also found this for favors

i wish i could find a way to explain to fi but he thinks a scrabble theme would be tacky

I agree...but it depends on what they have for a cake budget...and what a designer will charge. If Smurfy has a $250.00 cake budget...chances are a 5 tier wedding cake is out of the budget...but who knows...

There are ways to make a scrabble theme quirky and cute. I like the silver balls centerpiece.

What are you going to cut and feed each other wih faux cake?????

They''ll cut from the top layer probably. There are different ways of doing it....

I think they will probably take a fake picture of us cutting into the cake just for the photo op and then a picture of us feeding each other from the sheet cake. That''s how my sister did hers anyways

ok my sister''s cake wasn''t dark orange like i had thought, it was more of a light orange (hey she DID have the open bar at the wedding, i couldnt remember every detail with all that yummy wine around haha) Anyways I do remember only the top part being real though. So here''s a picture of her cake (she had an autumn wedding too, though hers was in colorado, mine will be in north dakota)

Wow her cake was really beautiful! Yours will be in good hands =)

Smurfy, Im glad to see you''re back and a little more chipper! I think doing a few touches of Scrabble would be really cute, so long as you didn''t take it so far as to have a Scrabble tiara on your head and wooden clogs made out of the little wooden tile trays! There are also ways you could incorporate that in a not so literal way, like having square-patterned table linens kind of like below to mimic the pattern on the game board, or using square shaped dishes instead of round. You could package favors in little velvet bags like the ones used to store the letter tiles. You could also use your and FI''s initials to make a Scrabble-esque monogram for stationery, etc. As for the cake icing, just make sure you do a tasting with icing that dark before definitely deciding on it because if anyone knows baking and desserts, it''s Freke! If you taste it and it''s good, then by all means, you''re worry-free!

I am in love with the idea of a winter wonderland in Fargo

I would stay with the forest green BM dresses, and reconsider the lighter green GM vests. They could be forrest green, gold brocade, or a deep maroon. Or keep the vests cream and have a lush deep green cravat. Use lots of pine greenery (think of the delicious fragance), candles, and subtle snowlike glitter. This could be done very inexpensively and look like a million dollars.

and it turns your teeth colors and can stain clothes...or white dresses. imho dark colored cakes are ick, some color is fabu. sorry, just thinking about my mom''s 40th bday party with black cake icing that made our teeth purple and tasted gross, but from a very fancy bakery.

swimmer, i hadn''t even thought about it turning your teeth funny colors. although, if one were to have a halloween wedding, the green teeth would be friggin'' AWESOME! okay, maybe i''m WAAAAAY too easily amused...

I really love the scrabble idea!! You have to do the cupcakes and the favors. I even like the centerpiece idea.
