Hi @DiamondLizzy,

They are not off the shelf. I got the cabs custom cut from a seller that has some rough, size, colour and quality not guaranteed as coloured jadeite, even from the same boulder, may vary in colour. She's currently on maternity leave though. But she did say before going on leave that she only has under 3mm left. Those my size can't be done from the remaining material she has. Usually, these more translucent jadeite pieces are cut from water tracks in the boulder and are fairly limited and usually thin.
Thanks so much for the reply. Your bracelet will definitely be going into an inspiration folder. Clearly I need to read up a bit more :)

I know the names don’t really matter but I want to learn... it’s like there’s a whole different language for jade and I feel like if I learn that language it’s easier to understand the mystery. Like water, type, etc... plus I feel better if I can identify the color myself instead of relying on the seller to tell me. Does that make sense?

Clearly it doesn’t help that I was a terrible student for Chinese so reading all the online articles from China gives me a headache lol. So learning progress is very slow.

Mmm I think there is also a limit to how much is online and how much resides with people.

Even translucency, what NGI puts as glassy variety (like my allaboutjade ripoff earrings), wouldn't get that in Taiwan and better HK labs.

Key is still to handle, see, compare items side by side, to build up that practical experience.

A Taiwanese 姐姐 taitai who was sharing with me about oxidisation told me she attended lessons with 师傅 in Taiwan. Up to a point. She also went to China to pay for lessons with another 师傅, because they specialise in different areas.

Something to consider, if you are keen and when COVID stops impacting lives majorly.

Wah I’m not that serious to actually travel and look for shifu to have lessons with (plus my work and two kids keeps me too busy to do fun stuff like that!).

Or just not now, as life is too busy as it is. But don’t mind doing a GIA course and maybe one for jadeite (is there one?) one day...

Me too. Or rather, I rather go travelling than to go for courses :)

I miss my weekend jaunts in Yangon to the markets, stalls and Gem Museum though. Good thing is, my friend's uncles are in Singapore now, so I can always scoot over to their house to check my jadeite stuff with them :D

I'd suggest setting in China as the cabs are not calibrated, so each piece has to be handset into their 18k bracket. Workmanship is good though, no complaints! Although the labour fee is many many times more than my usual ring, earring, pendant

Yeah doesn’t really look blue in some light?

Very light blue.

There was one more blue but not round. 62.9 and thin at 7.x mm. Tempted but didn't fancy the overall look as it lacked thickness.

Very tough.

I ended up getting 2 pinkish ones instead :)
