First above 1k purchase here, the bottom pair of Mogok untreated pink sapphires.

The setting ended up costing way more than the pair

Those are just lovely! You will always remember the experience associated. Do you wear them often?

When I first had them made I thought they'd be too dressy but surprisingly they aren't! My earrings are on frequent rotation, so not as often as I'd like. But tomorrow I will.

You are right. When my eyes rest on them when I'm selecting what to wear, they always remind me of that moment how my jewellers recommended me the pair to purchase before their local new year as the seller/trader needed funds! They were so uncomfortable meeting me at a cafe outside of their shop and gem museum as there was always that unfamiliarity and unease with foreigners outside of their comfort zone!

Those are a treat for others I’m sure, when you wear them. It’s so important to make the most out of their beauty and your effort. Must look smashing with everything. I can imagine that scene which you described!

To plug for Visit Myanmar, I went on a short roadtrip and these are very rough hewn, in part pastoral and rugged sights that exist outside of Yangon and off the usual touristic beaten path. Some were places where we just drove to without a map to explore. Having my driver getting lost was part of the fun lol.

The first 2 are an old disused reservoir and incomplete temple built by some old dynastic king. In the same state. I call them Gladiator Meets Indiana Jones :)

How magic! What a humbling experience it must have been..when I’ve seen ancient sites , I’ve felt the strong sense of all that is important in the beautiful, human effort and yet also our very finite time in this body. It’s slmost too much to bear, to hold these two together inside. Gorgeous structures!

The juxtaposition of yesterday and today, is a constant reminder that what is today will be tomorrow's yesterday.

So surely every minute every second in the now has to count! Or maybe they are just one of the infinitesimal parts that make a whole? Is there anyone or any being keeping count?

(Just had 2 glasses of Shiraz to unwind )

I'm so pb and j! Your adventure sounds absolutely amazing! The food **** has me drooling! And I'm surprised that cabs would be so affordable. I guess i know where my next vacation is going to be!

I don't think I've seen one piece you have that I would say can't be dressed down though. That's what I think is the true versatility of colored stones...they are so easy to match!

Totally understand not disclosing. The internet can be scary!

I'm happy you have this thread, let's us gem lovers live vicariously through you! I'm happy to hear that I wasn't the only one completely taken aback by the prices
But I guess we all have to start somewhere. I'm slowly dipping my toes into buying on ebay...but some of the prices just look too good to be true. And then you have to wonder how long shipping from the other side of the world could take! Not to mention softer stones like garnets can be so easily mishandled!

I've been here since the beginning of your adventures, along with a few others Although I haven't talked very much I've enjoyed every minute of it. I love that you have been awake and aware throughout your entire time here, enjoying the local attractions and the scenery and the food as well as meeting new friends that soon become old friends. You are an incredible person, I really would like to meet you one day. If you are ever in the United States, I will happily invite you to Texas (the land of milk and honey). Though there is a caveat. You must bring ALL of your jewelry!! Every single piece!!

Edit: I'm not kidding. You will be welcome at my home.

Thank you ladies! The main tourist season which is during the cooler and dry spell is Nov to Feb. We are entering the monsoon season from around June to Sept. If not too much rain, it's actually lovely to visit then too as is greener and the air fresher.

Bangkok will be a good base to fly to and then onward to Yangon. Plenty of flight connections and just slightly over an hour flight time. My friends can get return flights under $100. I usually book later and pay slightly more and it's still full service with 30kg luggage allowance :) It's more expensive in Bangkok than Yangon but the quality of hotels and food is higher. Though it'd still be very affordable by Western prices!

There are also gems in Bangkok ;-)

@suzanne2 thank you so much for the open invitation! One of my college pals married an American and they are living with their 2 cute kids in Texas too. Houston when I last checked in. It's really high time I plan to visit the States. Everyone in my immediate family has been there except me

The restrung white with green jadeite bead necklace.

Brainstorming what to carve on the brown patch. That's an old piece of water jadeite on the opaque side.

Lovely! What are your options for carving? Maybe a spirit animal, or an abstract design with beautiful lines. The vessel is adorable. That’s the kind of thing which steals the heart!

I suggested a leaf positioned diagonally, to give it an autumnal feel on the brown patch.

They carve by hand here with rudimentary tools, so anything too fine and delicate they can't!

Not sure what they will carve in the end :)

A leaf design is perfect! I’m sure it will be delightful in the end because it’s already so as a base line.

Contemplating these Mong Hsu untreated rubies.

The larger pair is 0.5ct each ruby and the smaller flatter pair is Around 0.3 to 0.34ct each ruby. The 0.5s are pretty clean without the dark purple core within. The smaller ones contain the purple core flecks and are more included. No plans for them as I have a pair of Mong Hsu rubies, slightly larger, being set in flower shaped settings for earrings. Though I don't mind buying to keep as they are a pleasant lighter purplish red.

This is a jadeite Buddha carving in the pre wax stage.

I thought it's really lovely in a very organic unpolished way, more real and 3D. The folds, face and headgear details are very nicely carved! Placed an order for 1 for my dad as this is intended for someone else. Type A jadeite.

The little rubies are lovely. They just look precious with how rich they are. Purplish red is lovely....Some gems are just a pleasure to just have.

That will be a lovely gift for your dad. There is so much art history in the styles of Buddha carvings! I think unpolished jade is very beautiful in its own way. The stone had a different presence without polish....

Just a sprinkling of other temples and the frescoes.

I climbed to the open roof this small temple to view the sunset (look ma, no rails). Panicked when it started getting packed with other tourists and people have been known to fall off. So I scuttled down after a short while.
