Mixing metals and gem or diamond colors?

Is there a right way to do this? I generally need things to be very uniform... I got married before I graduated college so my degree would have my married name. I purposely buy things in 14k gold to match a bangle I was gifted as a baby. But I love seeing mixed metal/ color combos on other people and recently acquired a brownish yellow diamond set in yellow gold and platinum.

Does anyone have tips/ tricks/ photos they want to share?
