Min. caret size for this design?

hi guys!

I've this design that I really want for my engagement ring and have attached a picture of it in this thread (the picture shows a 4-prong design, but I would like a 6-prong one). I'm looking at 0.73-0.8 carat diamonds due to budget constraints. I've went to 2 B&M shops locally and both promised that they could deliver this design. However, I just spoke to my best friend's dad who's been in the jewelry line for decades (as both a supplier and craftsman), and he told me this design would only look good with larger diamonds of at least 1.5 carat (I've known their family for many years and he'll never up-sell me). So I'm hoping that you guys will be able to give me some inputs as well as i'm torn.. We do not have the budget to increase the carat size, yet it's a design that I truly love and want. What's the min. size that would allow such a design to look good? Is it really true that with a 0.73-0.8 carat, it wouldn't look beautiful?

It does need a larger diameter stone as the setting will cover and overwhelm a smaller diameter stone.

I kind of agree ... to keep the scale/proportion of what you see.

OP: Would it be possible to do the setting as you love it now but maybe with a calibrated size colored stone (e.g. 7mm) as an ering? You can always change out the CS for a diamond down the road when budget allows.

I think that setting with a CS would be amazing!

If you were to skip the pave on the basket, this setting would look lovely with any size diamond. It's the pave basket that's causing you trouble. Since it would not be noticeable from above, personally, I'd skip it; I love a diamond solitaire with a pave band. Very classy. I'd also give some thought to the pave on the donut - if you want to wear a band with this ring, that pave will tear up your wedding ring pretty effectively.

ETA If you go to the Blue Nile or James Allen web sites, you should be able to find examples of this setting with a center stone the same size, or close, to what you're considering. Look at the section that shows customer's purchases - it will give you some idea.

Pretty and would look good with a .7-.8ish stone.

Poster said they wanted a 6 prong which wouldnt really allow room for stones on the basket bar. Either go with something like @baby monster posted
or do a 6 prong minus the diamonds on the basket.

I think that first we/you need to find the exact setting wanted ... like the pave band with six prongs ... because only then will you be able to decide how the diamond will end up looking. Unfortunately, some setting really do look better with bigger diamonds .... but there are soooooo many settings out there .. too many maybe ... so yeah, I would suggest starting with finding the exact setting you want.

I think it's entirely possible for a setting to overwhelm a stone, and some settings are just made for larger stones. But, there are ways for you to get the same look with a smaller stone. I think that the setting that baby monster noted was a good one for a smaller stone. I was thinking that if you were into halos that it might balance the look a little more with this setting.

Whether it will look good is subjective, and I think it comes down to the proportions that you like.

No pave on the head, just on the shank should work fine. You definitely don't want pave at the base of the head (doughnut) because it will scratch the wedding band.

The Oval diamond in this picture us over 1.5 carats maybe even 2 carats. I say that it can be done in any size but will look accordingly(different than your picture. )
You may ask for CAD sketch or render to see the relation between the diamond and the ring setting
