Hi all,

I appreciate all the ideas, information, and help I get here on PS. After getting your opinions, I am pretty set on the Scott Kay Tiara setting (http://www.scottkay.com/tiara/d/1172_c_308 ) Scott Kay offers a variety of metals that I am considering: white 14K, 19K, Palladium, and Platinum. The 14k and 19k are alloyed with palladium not nickel.

Which would you recommend to retain the detail and integrity of this ring over time? I am looking for the best metal in terms of look, security of diamonds, and retention of the details (milgrain) of this ring. FYI- the jeweler I am looking at provides free rhodium re-plating.

As always, thank you for your advice,
Carrie

Platinum feels heftier than gold and some people like the weight. Palladium is the lightest of the three metals.
Platinum can be repolished without losing material, so over decades, it will not wear to thinness. Not sure about palladium. White gold will wear off when polished but will last your lifetime easily.
Platinum will show scratches / nicks sooner than gold and thus appear a bit grayish or dull. This is called "patina" but can be repolished to look shiny new again. Palladium patina is the grayest of the three metals.
Not all jewellers are comfortable working with palladium.
All three metal types are a personal preference.

Platinum and palladium will not lose metal over time like gold will. For that reason, I would choose either of those.
