Hi all,

We are new to diamond shopping, but after some major ‘binge reading’ of pricescope forums, I figured out what kind of stone I want. Needless to say, we immediately got discouraged by retail and even online prices, but I guess not discouraged enough to give up on my dream completely. Hence, this post….

My friend advised me to look for someone who wants to sell their 'preloved' / pre-owned diamond. She told me her story that gave me some hope. For over a year, she had been trying to find a buyer for her rock and then ended up selling it back to her jeweler for half of its bluenile value. Granted, a market for GIA 2.4 RB F VS1 xxx might be limited, but still she was heart-broken in more ways than one (bitter divorce and getting pennies for her amazing ring).

So I am hoping to find someone who is looking to sell their diamond and find a middle ground between a comparable online price and a price offered by a jeweler to buy the diamond back.

We are looking for:
GIA
Round
Approx. 1.8 – 2 ct
VS2 or better
G or better
Excellent cut, polish and symmetry
None to faint fluorescence

Also, I will appreciate any advice, search tips, as well as “good luck” wishes. :) (Please, no sarcastic remarks, I got enough of that already.) :|

With specific offers, please send me a personal message. Thanks!

What's your budget? You can keep an eye on diamondbistro, loupetroop, Good Old Gold (steals and deals), and JBEG. I don't know how often a stone that fits your parameters come up though.

Thank you! It will be very helpful. :)

Our budget is under $20K, but what's most important is to find a good deal for the money. I might be dreaming, but I hope to find a stone for 70-80% of James Allen comp diamond.

This is not trying to be negative and unhelpful, you might have to either lower the colour you are seeking or the size of the diamond or increase your budget...

I don't think you will find a stone that is 70% to 80% less than James Allen prices. The reasons for this is they are fairly competitively priced to start with. The only stones that are will be EGL ones which are not graded the same way as GIA stones or you will find something that is badly cut. Are there bargains out there? Sure Ebay, pawn shops and so on. People here prefer to spend more and deal with reputable vendors in order to know they are not being ripped off & get the best cut stone that they can buy within their budgets.

The best places to find preloved are DiamondBistro, Loupetroop, also email the girls from Jewels by Erica Grace and see if they have anything new coming in tell them you can pay in cash and if they do have anything negotiate a discount. The people at IDJ jewellery have also been known to work wonders on budgets as well.

If you are after a true bargain then you might consider an Antique cut stone, or a stone with a different shape such as a marquise or a radiant or another shape, sometimes you can find them for what I would consider bargain prices.

I think she meant 20-30% of James Allen prices, but that still may be a challenge. One reason it will be a challenge is that there simply aren't many stones in the 1.8-1.99 range in the first place. You'll find a lot more in the 1.5-1.79 range. Or you need to lower your color expectations. You could get a fantastic deal on a hearts and arrows 2.3 ct J VS2 for $20k:

Thank you for your insight.

I understand that our budget might be low for the quality that I want, but this is my way of directly reaching out to people who want to sell their diamond faster and for a higher price than local jewelers can offer.

I am not really interested in a lower cut quality, EGL, enhanced, lab-made, fancy shapes or OEC. I might be more flexible about color and clarity.

In general, I want to find a win-win solution for both the seller and myself. I'll keep my fingers crossed. :)

Yes, I meant 20-30% off James Allen prices. (definitely not 70-80% off) Sorry for the confusion.

You made a good point about my carat range. I will consider diamonds 1.70+. Now I'll just have to figure out how to change the headline. :)
