Hi everyone.

We have been looking for an emerald cut stone for our engagement ring for some time but have been having a real hard time at the local stores. We started looking online, and really liked being able to see the stone via pictures (ie james allen). we were hoping for some opinions as everyone we talk to in stores seem to either have no idea what they are talking about or just tell us what they think we want to here to make a sale.

The stone we were looking at is 2.2 carat, vvs2, color J, VG polish, ex sym, no flor. It's looks eye clean to me on James allen and faces up well. The table is a little on the large side.

I was hoping to get peoples opinion on this stone/price point, and any advice on other options or things to look for.

She is going back and forth between a 14k rose gold (less "coppery") or an undipped white gold setting so we were thinking the color of the stone was less of a concern. Any thoughts on this as well?

thanks in advance

as the owner of some Emerald cut diamonds over the years (each better than the prior stone) I can honestly say that 1) the table is too big, 2) i would not pay for a vvs clarity in a J color stone and 3) without the crown height its too hard to get a three dimensional sense of the stone. lastly, the pic looks like there is too much windowing but that pic alone isnt a great way to assess

Most of these are higher color and smaller tables...you might check them out..nice!

They are already set but maybe they will sell you just the center stone. Don't know your budget but I agree that table is just too large and emerald cuts show color more than some of the other cuts. Does she like the lower color of a J? In a well cut round or cushion a J can be quite white facing but in an emerald you will see the color

The best cuts for emeralds are those with smaller tables:

Personally, I really like the length to width ratio of the James Allen stone. I hear you on the lack of emerald cuts at local jewelers. Just went through the same thing myself. Luckily, I found a great stone via the pricescope search (union diamond).

I don't know what your budget is (the price of the James Allen stone wasn't available), but if you decide the J is showing too much color, I'd suggest looking for an I with fluorescence. As for the cut, yes, the table looks a little large, thus lowering the crown %, and potentially reducing the fire of the stone. However, emerald cuts aren't cut to maximize "razzle dazzle" so I wouldn't stress about it too much.

Best advice I can give if you're serious about the James Allen stone is to get an ASET and see it in person. I think James Allen has a pretty solid return policy.

Good luck! Emerald Cuts are gorgeous!

I am also a EC owner and find the J too yellow for my taste
