I've done a good amount of research on this site, in brick and mortar stores, and elsewhere, and I still feel like I've barely scratched the surface of diamond knowledge. With that said, I defer to the collective knowledge here and beg for assistance...

The scenario: I'm going to propose to a very beautiful woman/the most wonderful person in my life in late October.

Her desire: Sneakily, I've found out exactly what she wants in a diamond ring, and it is thus: decent size (.9 to 1 ct), round, on a 14k-18k white gold petite solitaire band.

My research: I've come to the conclusion that on a 3k budget, 1 ct isn't going to happen. I've looked at the difference in say, a J color and an F+. I know that when compared to a sheet of white paper, one looks "less white". I've looked through the jeweler's thingy and seen the difference between a VS1 and S2 under magnification. I've been told, and read, that cut is the most important factor, and GIA is the benchmark for certifications. If any of these are half-truths, please let me know.

My conclusion: My desire is to find a .9 ct, J-G color, SI2 to VS1, round, ideal/VG (GIA rated) stone for under 3k.

My questions: Am I crazy? The .8 ct and smaller diamonds are just too small. She has tiny fingers, but it would still look ridiculous and to be honest, I can't tell the difference between a J or an F or an SI2 and a VS1 unless I go through the tricks. Is it possible to get what I'm looking for? I've used the diamond search and found these things in my price range, but I can't tell if it's actually a pretty looking diamond or not...things like culet, fluorescence, etc. are still beyond my understanding in regards to how they affect the diamond. Any advice on a good diamond that will fit my needs please? Thank you in advance.

I think you could find a mid coloured stone in that size in budget, have you considered different shapes and antique cut stones? Preloved will always buy more than brand new for example something like this the Jewels by Erica Grace ladies have payment plans too, just outside of budget;

In budget but slightly smaller than you are after;

Really pretty set;

Or go for a halo within budget because it makes the whole ring look bigger for example;

Or use their payment plan and go for something like this one (which is only just outside of budget);

Alternatively stones under 1 carat in different shapes like marquise, pears and others will look larger on the finger and are cheaper than round brilliants generally.

These finds are amazing arkieb1 :appl: :appl: :appl: I think that the .80ct stone in the halo setting would be amazing :appl: (and in budget ;)) )

Arkie has found you some really beautiful options! But if you are still looking for the one carat, solitaire setting and trying to find a diamond, the EASIEST way to narrow them down is to use the HCA tool in the top right under "tools." Plug in the numbers on the certificate and find stones that score 2 or under. I think you could defnitely go down to a J or K. I have a K that faces up very white. It's in a halo surrounded by diamonds of a much lighter color and you can't tell the difference.

SI1 and SI2's can be eyeclean, you just have to ask the vendor.

I searched for you, you can start looking at some of these:

i truly think you should consider a K color. Dropping down your specs from a J just down ONE puts you right in your target budget!

you could pair it with this (or even the cheaper setting, but this one has some style to it ). Set in 14 K rose gold instead of white would be very flattering too1

I have a K around that size (.85) and i do think you would be happy with it if you really want .9 cts! :wavey:

Email sent! Thank you Niel:)

Back to the original poster...

Gypsy had suggested this stone to me during my search. Its a 1 carat at exactly 3K. Needs a little girdle help but that could be fixed by bezeling it or maybe having someone rehab it. http://diamondbistro.com/category/215/Loose-natural-Diamonds/listings/35888/1-carat-OEC-w-GIA-cert-K-SI1.html

It might just be my computer, but that stone looks to have a LOT of color. If you're going to go with a lower color, I would focus on finding the best cut available so some of that color is hidden. An antique OEC in general is not going to have the best light return as, say, an excellent cut MRB or one of the AVRs from Good Old Gold that are cut for premium optics.

Email ID Jewelry.

You were given good information.

A J colored stone would be a good deal for you. And I agree with Neil that a K should be in the running as well.

I also agree that ID Jewelry is the vendor for you.

So I would call them, tell them PS referred you.

And tell them this is what you want:

a J or K SI, completely eyeclean, GIA Ex/Ex with an HCA under 3 with florescence, at least medium, but strong blue preferred (and no milkiness). At 90 points. In a simple solitaire setting with a 2mm shank. Also ask for an idealscope image. And tell them your budget is 3k out the door.

They can do that for you. And do it well. When they give you the idealscope image post it here.
