Let's play a game... rainbow gems.

I'm going to add a green, because we seemed to jump right past it.

This is the first time I've managed to take a representative picture of this big specimen, a large chunk of rock covered in glittering demantoid crystals. The pic below was taking using my iPhone under a studio light that my wife uses. Normally the phone camera mutes the green, but this time it caught the colour I see in person pretty accurately:
IMG_1351.jpg

This piece is >15 cm across and weighs nearly 1.9 kg. It's from Afghanistan, from the Tani district in Khost Province in the southeast of the country.

I got this one at an outrageously cheap price because the seller thought it was olivine (peridot) from India. Naturally, I was going to let him keep believing that :twisted2:

This is a real fun thread to follow, love it.
I’m excited to contribute a blue. Lately I’ve been looking at my things with renewed appreciation. Probably because I will likely not be buying any gemstones I love due to soaring prices and my own unwillingness in scouring and spending endless hours and days which I happily used to do, in search of bargains.

Anyway, these are my blues IMG_8970.jpegIMG_8971.jpegIMG_8972.jpeg

If I may derail slightly… @Mrsz1ppy your chunky gold band and OEC stack is insanely delicious!!!

Please may I ask for the width of the band and/or the OECs?

ETA: are those rose cuts?

Of course you can! Thanks for noticing.

Yes, they are rose cuts. The center one has a 7mm diameter, as does the band.

I hesitated, because I bought a rose cut from one of the IG sellers, and it doesn’t have much sparkle. Took a chance on this one from Sin City Finds, and it has the wonk and hand cut sparkle I’ve been hoping to find.

This specimen has the most unique, cool wintergreen shade. So unusual for demantoid, compared to the typical yellowish-greens. Beautiful!

Please tell us more about these bright blue beauties!! :kiss2:

And we're on to PURPLE!

Thanks Autumn. That’s why I’m here for

Both stones are copper bearing cuprian tourmalines. The larger is 4.53ct always stays blue, and the smaller 2.51ct is bluish green though in certain light like above, it leans more bluish. Just the nature of them, which makes them all the more interesting.

When can we see your fab Opal again?

I was sure the pinky ring was tourmaline, but I thought the larger might be topaz, because it's so big and blue! Both gorgeous!!

I hope to set the opal sometime soon. I have everything picked out, now I just need the money. lol Next up is a fun one though!

Thanks! It's actually a colour shifter. Under an original-style energy-saving bulb, which I think is a compact fluorescent lamp (CFL), the demantoids are a lime green, which is more like the colour you'd expect. They looked that colour under the lights the seller was using, so that might explain the confusion with peridot. The crystal shape should have been a dead giveaway though.

7mm, yummy! New goal unlocked…!

And here is purple: a pinkish lavender jadeite cabochon (glutinous, not icy texture) that I tried on. I can’t remember the exact dimensions of this lavender egg but needless to say, I am now hankering after something of a similar size.

(Photos have been adjusted to reduce the warmth of the pictures, as my skin tone was orange! Not sure if this is the best way to adjust for overly yellow photos though…)

I can't decide if I want to wear it or eat it.

Yummy indeed! Such a pretty colour, high dome and generous size. Did you buy it? Most lavender jadeite isn’t icy or glassy. I think a glutinous texture shows off the colour best. Looks good on you!

Thank you, no I didn’t buy it - it was one of the first lavender pieces I tried on and I’m still training my eye in what lavender I like =)2

On a side note i really liked how they make the claw not so noticeable for cab stone. I have had a few cab stone mounted in claw and they look hideous.

So glad the weather finally cleared for such a happy photo! Such a cheerful goldenrod shade, as Crimson said. Citrine and imperial topaz have some of the best sunny shades, IMO. Thank you for sharing this beauty!

That picture was inside
the met office are a pack pf lying bas*ards
the last two days have been so cold its even been inside my work -a pie shop
one day i want an imperial topaz

Loooooove!!!!! Loooooooove! You’ve got me hankering for big things now!!! Haha it’s just getting worse!

It is terrible of me but here is a new unheated 3.5 ct Mozambique ruby. I am drawn to reds and pinks.. I don’t have any Mozambique rubies - mine are all Burmese, plus one from Tanzania. So I bought a Mozambique just out of curiosity. One condition I set was that the stone must exhibit fluorescence.
That ruled out the majority of Mozambique rubies.
This one fluoresces and is purplish. Apparently, most fluorescent Mozambique rubies tend to be more purplish or rose red. This hue is reportedly the preferred red among younger ruby buyers in China (those in their thirties).
I bought it in June and haven’t decided what to do with it.

In the shop. The ruby is in the gem box. Other rubies in this pic all look purplish too.
ETA @mellowyellowgirl do you see the unset spinel cab?

Beautiful!!!!!! Can’t wait to see how you’ll set it!

I’m on Ban Island so running around looking for Labubus instead of pricier pursuits :lol-2:

I dare not even look hard at Labubus… they are so sought after here, it is crazy. Pricy in their own way! There are full blown adults walking around with Labubus attached to their bags…I have a huge collection of soft toys and fluffies and my friends continue to buy them for me. I have no more room!

The setting was very elegant indeed - I also like how it's got tiny emerald cuts on the shank rather than round cuts!

Is that a moonstone at the corner?

I need to know more about the spinel cab :kiss2:

I was tempted to buy it but it was just a little too orange for me. It has that adorable bubble look. It is pretty clean. It looks a bit more orangey than in my photo. Details of the spinel: 7.95 ct, “roval” 12.63 by 12.12 by 5.82 mm.
Price (now set with a diamond halo) is below 10K.

Is that a moonstone at the corner?
Yes! Sharp of you to notice. It is rainbow moonstone, a smaller one.
