I was wondering if you could tell me if you feel nervous at all w/ having only 4 prongs?
I mean, do you consciously be careful not to smack it into things?
Mine is 3.67 and in a taller setting w/ 6 prongs and I bump it once in a while and I wince.
I like the idea of 4 prongs because I like teh less metal look, but am skeered

What do you think, or how do you feel about having 4 prongs?

TIA!

My stone is a 2.36 and set with 4 prongs, and yeah, I am pretty aware of being careful not to whack it into things. I do keep a close eye on all 4 prongs (via the loupe), plus I get it professionally checked every 6 months (at least)... AND it is fully insured.

So I don''t really worry tooooooooo much.

I do adore the 4-prong look very much, so to me, it''s worth it.

Hi ringabling!

I am having my 3.01Ct RB set in 6 Claws because I find that 4 Claws sometimes give RBs a more 'squared' look which I am personally not partial to. I also find that 6 Claws seem to make larger diamonds look even bigger because the Claws kinda adds to the visual diameter of the RB......Not sure if I am making sense here.
19.gif

I have yet to receive my Ring yet though, so I can only fully express my views when I'm actually wearing it in 2 weeks' time!
31.gif

That.....plus my jeweller just told me a customer of hers came in the other day to reset her diamond because it FELL OUT when one of the claws in her 4 Claws worn/broke off! It was a 4 Carat diamond, and the lady was very lucky because the Hotel Staff actually found the Stone and put it aside for her!

I'd more likely do a double prong if I wanted to achieve the "4 Claw" look too....It's probably all in the mind but I'd feel more secure with more prongs.

I am so sorry! Will post pics once I get it....Waiting very anxiously too! But I have had the 4 Claw vs 6 Claw debate for a while myself.....

I agree, LynnB''s ring looks gorgeous....

HI:

I am assuming you are referring to ladies with RB''s; my 5.01 radiant has a claw on each clipped corner; somehow 4 prongs seems just right!

. Yet I try not to smash it around.....

cheers--Sharon

I don''t have a large stone, but here are my thoughts. I think you would be fine with four prongs as long as you have good insurance in case a chip happens and you take it to get checked 1-2 times a year. As long as you do these things I think having only 4 prongs is fine. If you prefer the look, then definitely consider it!

I agree.
I was just wondering how people felt about it after having it. Is it stressful or do you sort of become de-sensitized to it?

Well, not that 2.52 is large by these standards,
9.gif
, but my radiant is round cornered and is held in place by 4 double prongs which I really like. It is set much lower than my last setting so I have not had any problems with banging it on anything. In this instance the 4 dbl prongs are just right.

2.52 is large!! Is that in your avatar?

LOL, well it''s large to me but middle of the road compared to some other gorgeous honkers around here that will remain nameless[

]. Yes, it''s the one in my avatar.

LOL!

Well, it''s GORGEOUS!!!!! Feel free to post a profile for me to ogle!

You mention you have 6 prongs now but in a higher setting. I think that having 4 willl be fine, especially if you choose to also set it a little lower. Less chance to knock it around so you are counterbalancing the risk with only 4 prongs. And definitely make sure it is insured, of course.

This is the same back and forth I''ve been having in my own mind for a while now...I''m looking at a 3+ stone currently... My husband is probably sick of me asking him "4 prongs or 6?" I definitely think that 6 prongs leaves less diamond exposed to the accidental bumps (which are inevitable), but both look beautiful in their own way.

In the end though, I think that as long as the diamond is not set too high, you get the prongs checked regularly, and the ring is insured, you can go either way and not have too much to worry about. If all of the previous is taken care of, then I think it''s just a matter of personal taste.

I know my answer doesn''t really help much...as you can probably infer, I''m still undecided...

anyone else w/ experience?

Harriet has her 3.6 ct. stone set in a Leon Mege solitaire with 4 prongs. I think as long as you have insurance, you can do whichever you prefer. It is a really hard decision, though!

ditto!! although I really do think I like 6 prongs on the bigger stones, but it''s totally a personal preference...

oooh thanks! Off to search that out!

Harriett would love your feelings on this!

As promised, I finally picked up my Ring, ringabling!

It''s actually late at night here, but I am too excited and just had share photos, so I truly apologize for the Picture Quality...My cam is 3 years old and kinda crummy!
Will follow up with a proper thread later.

I am trying to post some side pics to show the 6 Claw Low Setting, but I keep getting Error Messages! *ARGH*

Finally managed a Side View pic.....The setting is fairly low and I have not bumped it against anything yet. In fact, I'm wondering if I should have it set higher so it looks larger!
