Hi I’m Jadeite.101 and I’m new to the forums. Been reading the jadeite forums and decided to make a thread about Jadeite aficionados hoping to chat with fellow jadeite lovers. Just a bit of a background I’m from the Philippines. It’s unfortunate however that a lot of Filipinos are used to cheap, treated, dyed jadeite or imitations sold at bargain bin prices. That when they go to places such as China, Hong Kong, Taiwan or Singapore they are shocked at how fine quality jadeite can reach astronomical prices. Just here to promote jadeite love and to share some of my collections.

1st Image is an Icy Jadeite Bracelet Colorless. Measuring 16mm. Translucent in person, mountain jadeite. It’s the 1st Jadeite bracelet that I actually bought. And costs about $2,200 US. Bought 2014.

2nd Image is a collection of Icy Jadeite Bracelets. Completely Colorless and Highly Translucent, River Jadeite. Equal Color, Texture and Transparency. 14mm each. Costing about $20,200 US. Since I bought them as a single strand necklace before having them restrung into 3 bracelets. Bought 2019.

3rd Image is a collection of bright apple green jadeite bead bracelets 12mm, 12mm and 14mm. Each costing about $1,700, $2,000, $2,400 US. Bought 2018.

4rth Image is a pair of Lavender Jadeite bead bracelets both 14mm. I call them my Double Happiness Bracelets. Each costing about $3,500 US. Bought 2019.

I source my Jadeite from a friend in Hong Kong who sources rough directly from Myanmar. She is gracious enough to tell me whether jadeite is treated, dyed or the real deal Type A jadeite.

Jadeites pictured are a personal collection and NFS. Bracelets are actually much larger but removed some beads for bracelet to fit my arm snugly.

Hope you appreciate them. Enjoy

Sharing my earlier collection of Ornate Jadeite Pendants. I was obsessed with circa 2014. I like how they each mean something different in terms of what is depicted and what they culturally mean. Sorry for the glaring lighting. Hope you guys enjoy them. Something different from the usual jewelry sorts. Color combinations in Jadeite are amazing. Lavender, Green, Red, and White/Colorless. 6ECE9314-7381-47E7-B8CE-7F615F1D1EE3.jpeg 6852DAB5-83EB-49D1-9690-7964169A704D.jpeg 1005C415-E47F-4A2E-A44E-C7C480823DFD.jpeg 803F13E5-A91F-4BAE-97F2-4E1A3888C3C5.jpeg A6E8989D-A7FB-4B70-8B54-904FAC70C634.jpeg 3B042572-E209-45F4-A527-D63CF01807E2.jpeg F8EADF54-1861-48CF-BF81-BC36FC036036.jpeg C8CDFBA6-4DE7-4B7C-A290-1C938B19D409.jpeg 43382C8A-7569-406C-AB01-10D66CB1D47B.jpeg E00470B2-026E-4151-8D79-35224942DB10.jpeg 768C2B83-D1F7-4D51-BEE3-98BABB9A2429.jpeg 6DA19987-D507-4AEC-A475-9222815B4D0A.jpeg BDB23DB1-900C-4E69-96DF-16C2C24AC896.jpeg

Very beautiful pieces. The icy white bead bracelets are magnificent and I love your Buddha too.
I know very little about Jade (I’ve tried hard to get a better understanding but I think you need to have lots of “hands on, eyes on” experience. I bought my pieces on eBay.
I bought for the size (I need a big size) and the look. I paid less than $200 for each piece. Grade A or B? For $200 I don’t mind either way. I just love how they look. C4D8EDA1-347A-4009-933C-5C0ED123DF57.jpeg

Those look magnificent and the colors to die for. I agree A or B if it makes you happy then it’s definitely worth it. I myself even though I’ve been collecting jadeite for years consider myself a novice. There’s still so much to learn. I try my best by reading on the subject plus a habit I do is to buy B, C, B+ C jadeite and to study them, compare them to the type As I also buy. It has taught me a lot. But I still don’t substitute it for Certification.

Loose Cabochons...

Older material from the 1930’s. Impeccable color and transparency.

Newer material. Apple green color. Bigger but more affordable vs the older fine quality material above.

Some B+C Jadeite I purposely purchased to train my eye in detecting treated or enhanced jadeite. Polymer treated and color enhanced.

B Jadeite. Color is natural but treated with wax. A lot of literature in the internet says wax treated jadeite is Type A. But the GIA considers them Type B.

Since A LOT of material in the jadeite world is treated sometimes you have got to make mistakes in order to learn. Sometimes purposely diving into treated or enhanced material can help preempt mistakes. It can never substitute though for a Certificate coming from a reliable Lab. But it serves it’s purpose though when there is an absensce of GIA or gem labs in your country such as mine here in the Philippines.

Forgive me for the picture quality. I find taking pictures of jadeite hard. It never quite registers on camera well unless you’re a professional photographer. Even Christie’s jadeite experts recommend that jadeite be seen in person as opposed to videos or photographs. But how on earth will we be able to do that. Haha

This Apple Green Jadeite Bangle was a gift from my sister’s mother-in-law. She knew I loved jadeite and told me stories of how she scored “natural” material from a store who dealt with mines directly. She had came from Myanmar land of Jadeite. She had come home with a hoard and was gracious enough to gift me with this bangle.

Here it is side by side with my Type A Apple Green Jadeite Bracelet...

Both have deliciously bright colors.

A little trick Iearned is to subject my jadeite to the Long UV Wave Test.

Here’s the Type A Apple Green Jadeite for comparison under Long Wave UV Light.

Inert or it does not fluoresce.

Here’s the Apple Green Bangle on THE SAME UV Light.

Fluorescence. A tell tale sign of treated jadeite according to the GIA.

Other samples of B+C Jadeite that I have under UV Light.

Lesson learned even if it’s directly from Myanmar assume it’s treated unless proven other wise by a reputable Lab.

I just wanted to post a source to GIA info on grading of jadeite. https://www.gia.edu/gia-faq-b-jade

To summarize treated jade, B is bleached & polymer impregnated, and B & C is bleached, dyed, and polymer impregnated.

I've seen in a few places lately, people saying certification agencies are saying a jade is B because of wax, but if it's being labeled as B there's either a lab issue or there's evidence of bleaching and synthetic polymer in the jade. Traditional processing with bee's wax, even heavily, as a polish is acceptable for A jade.

GIA article saying that “many traders misleadingly describe B-type jadeite jade as resin-impregnated only. This leads the unsuspecting buyer to believe that wax-impregnated jadeite jade is A-jade.”

In this case jadeite bangle was heavily treated or impregnated with wax and was classified as Type B Jadeite.

Thanks for the longer article! I love learning about jades, and had no idea treatment included wax filling now. I wonder how wax impregnation bodes for durability, as the resin impregnated ones are known to be so much weaker than natural.

Impregnation only takes place after bleaching, with wax apparently or more typically a synthetic polymer. Bleaching sounds so innocent, but I watched a video of the process of bleaching, and the bangles that came out were just totally destroyed. I'd not realize exactly how aggressive a treatment it is. They would just crumble before they were refilled. It made me understand why they say you can't wear the same treated piece day after day.

Wax in A jade would only be used for polishing, but tends to settle in crevices or stone lines, it's not like a soaking in at the molecular level type of wax. So, the type of all over glow you're seeing is usually an indication of B or B&C. The pendant you posted where it is only glowing deep in the cracks is common in untreated jade where the polisher didn't get all the wax out of the deep points. But, you know how it goes- even if it doesn't glow it could still be treated.

Jade is a wild market. There are even the treatments that are technically considered A, but that many A jade enthusiasts don't want- like dipping or polishing. o_O

A pendant I’m thinking of resetting. Lavender Jadeite with Green hues carved as a mountain scene. B1398FD1-8DB8-4668-B710-8AA6C1001DFE.jpeg

What a great thread! Wonderful collection! I had no idea of Ice bead pricing. Wow.

I love this pendant as it is! It has an Art Deco feel. You don’t like it? How would you reset?

Thanks! Really? It’s good as it is? I was planning to make it more sleek with graduated diamond on the sides cascading from .20 all the way to .55 about 11 on each side. Then 2 diamonds on top 1c and .71 with the 1c on top of the .75. It’ll serve to hide the pendant’s bail.

I have got questions that have been nagging me so I decided to post it here hoping for answers. How many of you believe that Jadeite Jade is primarily an “Asian”, “Oriental” or “Chinese” stone?

How many of you refrain from wearing Jadeite which feature carvings of figures? Because of cultural appropriation? And stick to “safer” more traditional shapes such as cabochons, beads and bangles?

Also would anyone be interested in knowing the meaning of such figures?

How many of you believe Jadeite is a grandmother’s stone?

I don’t know if my questions are offensive if they are I ask for understanding and forgiveness.

To give a slight background I’m from the Philippines which like the West doesn’t have a big Jade Culture. I got my love of Jadeite Jade from both my grandfathers who were Chinese from Xiamen China. They would come home from trips with Jadeite jewelry at hand as presents for my grandmothers which would eventually pass to my mom.

Interesting carvings and I love the colours.

But why is the 1930s material thin, with cotton and cracks? Great colour but marred by the above. I'd have thought older finds are usually better in quality and more intact.

Thanks!

Yes true clarity isn’t great, the stones have lines. But the color and transparency is exceptional. But the cotton is minimal but I think the glaring light makes it look severe. I really don’t know how to take great photos of jadeite. But still the lot of the older material cost $2,000 US.

I'll answer your questions as a European. I don't find them offensive at all. I think the differences between people/cultures are interesting and worth discussing!

- I consider jade to be primarily oriental because no one wears it here and I know it is more popular in some Asian countries. Plus as a child I knew a Chinese lady who wore jade and this was the only time I saw until I was older and visited some gem shows. That may have contributed to my judgement.

- I love the workmanship of elaborate jade carvings. I wouldn't wear a very elaborate carving because it is not my style. Simpler carvings that are still culturally symbolic, like the peach, I would.

- I love reading about the symbols found in jade and Google what they mean from time to time.

- I don't associate any gemstones with a certain age. I see some Asian sellers saying the younger generation prefers X, compared to the older generation which prefers Y. This concept is completely foreign to me. That said, I would consider a strand of pearls to be more traditional than some jewelry/gems but I don't associate it with an age group.

I think people have been accustomed to the thinking that it is primarily an Asian stone. The great jewelry houses like Cartier who introduced it to the Western Market during the 1920s to 1930s Art Deco period sure did reinforce it as an Asian stone due to the Oriental Craze. Even contemporary Asian designers such as Wallace Chan, Carnet or Zhaoyi, who can really push boundaries if they wanted to still treat it primarily as an Asian stone. I think the only really prominent designer I’ve seen not doing primarily Asian designs with Jadeite is Hemmerle. They do lovely contemporary work on Jadeite that really comes across cultures. May it be their earrings or beaded necklaces mixed with other gemstones and precious to non precious metals. I wish more designers could to more cross cultural work. Maybe that way it can appeal to a broader demographic.

In the Philippines with it’s heavy Western influence people still do wear Jadeite but only as trinkets or lucky objects. There are exceptions of course but still majority never treat it anything other than second class gemstone.

Yes I myself don’t wear carved Jadeite pieces. I only collect them. It isn’t because I feel it’s inappropriate to do so. More so I like understated pieces that look sleek. So cabochons, beads, and bangles are more my thing. But I do think the carvings add another aspect of interest to Jadeite. The symbolism behind each carving and what they mean as a whole.

That is true even in the Jadeite Market sellers tend to delegate or associate The different Jadeite colors with a niche market. As an example industry professionals say that Vivid saturated emerald greens or imperial green are preferred by the older generation. Bright apple green, Icy Colorless and Omphacite Jadeite by the younger generation. Lavender jadeite by women. Red and yellow Jadeite by Westerners.

Thank you!

I really do love them to bits. I never take off my Jadeite bracelets. I wear them in different combinations usually in three’s but if I’m particularly under the weather or need some cheering up I wear them in five’s but only at home. It does get heavy. I revert to three’s when I’m out.
